If you enjoy roasting coffee as I do, invest in the FreshRoast SR 800 with extension tube and you can roast coffee as well as any of the big boys. I roast 226 grams each time and it is a very precise machine and lots of fun. You get the to play with the profiles of the coffee and it will NOT break the bank investing. Sure this machine you have here is cheap and it will roast coffee but never the same or does it give you control of the roast. Chef Jerry JH Coffee Lab Irmo South Carolina USA

Thank you for the video. I also purchased a BAR WELL roaster. Since not all machines will achieve same temperature, no matter what the dial says, I highly recommend a thermometer, so you can double check what the temperature of the surface is, at the time of the roast. The machine is also a bit 'loud', so one has to pay close attention to when the first/second crack occurs, to get the desired roast. This was important to me, in order to get consistent results time after time.

I used this machine for a while until I tried roasting Sumatran Mandheling beans and I could not get to a satisfactory roast. I’m now roasting in a round bottomed wok and have achieved a decent Mandheling roast. My advice would be to read up about the importance of the bean mass during a roast, Note how the stirrer is creating two separate batches.

I haven't yet roasted more than 8oz (1/2 pound) of green beans. I think you get the most even roast by frequently tipping the machine to the right or left for a few rotations of the stirring rod. I typically heat up the unit for 2 min. or until the unit has reached 220 degrees celsius. After 17 min. of roasting at 220 I turn the unit up to 240 degrees celsius and roast for another 1.5 to 2 min. Pour out all the beans into a metal large sieve, and pour the beans between the sieve and another while outside, blowing on the beans as they fall so as to blow off the bean skins. My roaster cost $119 on Amazon -- too expensive for what it is. My fresh-roasted coffee beans smell like chocolate!

Is this the same Mark F who is a serious cyclist in mid MD? If so, I've been home roasting for over 12 years and willing to share ideas, etc. Sam Walters

I preheat (charge) the empty roaster for several minutes at around 200 Celsius. Then add the beans and let them go through the drying phase at that temperature. When they get to a golden color I begin to back off the temperature a little. Be careful because a little can easily be alot with that tiny dial. Then I may back off a little more about half way through first crack. This can very with different beans.

it would probably work MUCH better if one bar IS bent up. all that does as is is to either just push the beans around in front of it or just swoosh right under the static beans. what you want for an even roast is for the beans to be constantly churning and mixing up. This is probably one of the worst designed roasters ive ever seen. If i had one i would make a thoroughly wavey bar going the full height of the roasting chamber to just off the bottom.
