I mean, I do see that there is certainly a lot more work that needs to be done from a technical viewpoint in order to be accepted but I still think they are very nicely done. Also, isn't the point of going to art school to learn in the first place? I never understood why they are being so harsh when it comes to portfolio submissions for literally a study. Don't give up, keep practising and you will certainly get there :) I can surely see the passion and love you have for it

This is actually so helpful to see. It can be tough seeing nothing but perfect portfolios from people who got into the top art schools in the world, because not many people do show their failures. It's really nice to gain a sense of the range of portfolios that art schools see. :)

Sweetheart, don't confuse being a good artist with getting into art school. There's plenty of merit to your work with plenty of room to grow with more practice. I don't know if I'm qualified to offer advice/criticism but I must say your last piece is amazing! The composition, colors and details really complete the painting and that work alone shows that you have a wonderful ability to create. That painting also shows that when you let your thoughts roam free without restrictions and without trying too hard you are able to paint extremely well! As an artist it's very easy to see the negatives in your own art, but even if you aren't satisfied with a painting or drawing, find at least one part of it that you like and point that out to yourself.

It takes a lot of courage to present your portfolio to the world here….. I admire your forthright and honest presentation. You certainly have a lot of potential so don’t think too much about one rejection by the Berlin Art School. All artists, and indeed people in every walk of life, go through numerous failures and rejections all through their careers, no matter how accomplished they may be. You’re young and have a long way to go and so much to look forward to. I think you have a talent for portraits and an eye for composition which, with the right amount of daily practice and guidance, can lead you wherever you choose to go…..whether with traditional or digital media. As an architect and artist, my advice would be as follows: try to dedicate some time to practice everyday, even if it’s just for 15/20 minutes….at home or outdoors. Make it a point to carry a small sketchbook and pen, pencil or whatever and sketch anywhere you are….on the train, on a bus, in a cafe, friend’s house….sketch anything and everything and gradually you’ll see huge improvements. Sketching from life is one of the quickest ways to develop as an artist. I like the fact that you’ve tried various mediums so keep that up…..experiment with colored pencils, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, pen and ink, ball point pen, graphite pencil, charcoal, oil paints, etc. You’ll enjoy the learning process needed for each medium and the thrill of accomplishment with every little step along the way. You don’t have to spend much money on materials to get in the practice, so look for discounted and student grade supplies initially……once you feel that you prefer a particular medium, then try out a better quality…..especially with watercolor and oil paints it does make a difference, but don’t bother about that at this time. Try to find some time to regularly watch demos and tutorial videos of other artists on KZfaq…..so many awesome people out there giving you the benefit of their knowledge for free!.….there are so many out there and I’m sure already familiar with some of them. If you wish I can give you a list of some that I subscribe to and whose work I admire. Visit art galleries and museums in your home town and get to see first hand the amazing work of historic and contemporary artists…..you’ll be inspired every time I guarantee! Try to find artists’ studios in your town and contact them and ask if you could visit and watch them work or to get some tips from them….or even to get a part time job helping them in their studio…..what better way to learn than watching someone live. I also suggest learning some form of digital art and photo editing software, if you haven’t already started……there are a lot of benefits to this: you can edit and manipulate pictures you take to create ideas for drawings and paintings; you can make quick compositions, correct and adjust things you don’t like and experiment with infinite color/texture alternatives in a fraction of the time it would take if you did it manually. In my opinion, if you have an iPad, then Procreate is the cheapest and most powerful app you can use to learn and quickly start creating digital art….you will fall in love with it very quickly…..it costs just $10 and is the best value for money for an artist….and you can use it even with the basic iPad and 1st gen Apple Pencil so no need to invest in an expensive iPad Pro. Alternative, if you don’t use an iPad, would be Clip Studio Paint $50, ArtRage $80 or Affinity Designer $55…..for Windows or Mac and all used by a lot of illustration artists……I don’t mention Photoshop because it’s a subscription service, so can get expensive….but if you’re a full time student I believe you can get a discounted rate. Free alternatives to Photoshop are GIMP, Krita, Paint.NET…..you can check them out too. I do hope this helps and wish you the very best in moving forward and staying motivated to achieve all your educational and career goals!

To your question about the paintings: I myself am not in artschool yet, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I would recommend looking a little bit into color theory and values/contrast. Your paintings are really fun and I like the ideas a lot, but some are not that eye catching, because it lacks depth. But that is easily fixable, it just takes a little research and practice! Other than that I see a lot of potential in your paintings and ideas and I think you should definitely go for it! Wish you all the best from another fellow German artist :)

Girl there is definitely a lot of potential in most of these. Currently I'm working on my art portfolio as well , and besides the fact that I'm going through different emotional phases rn, one thing that I've noticed is how much there is that I dont know. It's frightening at first, but also inspiring. I've been studying art works from different artists in all kinds of shapes and forms, and I've learnt a lot in such a short time. There's a chance that I don't get in the program, but I'm already achieving so much. One thing I would recommend is to actually take your time and go through the steps and process of the creation of an art work by other artists. try to figure out your strengths as well as your weaknesses, because that way you can improve your art by focusing more and more on what you're good at, instead of avoiding or being afraid of what still needs some work. A portfolio should be representation of our finest work, so if you dont have the time to work on a specific problem, you don't need that piece in your portfolio at all.

The more art I consume, the more I struggle with what would be considered "good art". I've seen art that is technical but lacks poignancy. I've also seen art that is simplistic but has stopping power. As a former art student, what I can say is that art school is hella hard-- particularly when working with professors with different levels of industry standards. But I do feel that it's a medium where improvement can seen in a very measurable sense particularly bc it's so visceral

Y’all need to stop lying and telling her these are not that bad because she won’t grow I think we all artist start like this at some point but we need honest feedback to get better, otherwise it will always be a joke. There’s a reason why they won’t accept the portafolio and is not the technique… the ideas are lack of creativity, effort and coherence it looks like a nine year old show up it’s journal. BUT there’s a LOT of courses online to learn how to draw properly and to open up your creativity it’s just matter of discipline and do it everyday…some people think art it’s just easy and that everyone can do it… but its actually a job of everyday and it requires a lot of persistence

Please don’t get down on yourself! I am not an art major but fairly late in life got into botanical illustration….. The only thing I see is that you have not developed something that is YOU yet……but you are very young and if you have a desire to learn you will. Don’t get down on yourself and do not let them crush your ideas! I think they may be looking for some type of conforming ideas. Hang in there dont give up!

I really feel this deeply. In my highschool we had to submit a 12 page visual arts portfolio and we were supposed to work on it for the two semesters and I started two nights before the final due date, missed any oppertunity to revise it with my teacher and had a total artists block the first night so I skipped school the next day to complete all 12 pages in one day and one night. If you are unsure about the requirements, some general ideas to follow are: -follow one to 3 or 4 themes, definitely explore them in different ways and media, but school seem to like when you kind of follow themes and demonstrate skill in exploring that theme in multiple media and multiple ways as this shows flexibility and skill -as mentioned above, don´t limit yourself to one medium -depending on the school, but a lot actually like artist studies, meaning you analyze a classical piece of art and even replicate parts of it and then show how it influenced your own style ( always reference the original artwork and artist clearly! I used headers like "exploring carravaggio´s use of light to create tone in his artwork: *Title of artwork*") -don´t be afraid to try new things but this may risk low qualityy pieces which don´t reflect the actual extent of your skill. Unfinished or untidy work that is unelegant in its methodology is a big no no , so definitely focus the largest portion on art styles you are used to and have been able to perfect for yourself (e g if your strength is sketching and line drawings, don´t make your entire portfolio about exploring watercolour and oil paint) -in a case of question, stick to more intense contrast and color pieces as they tend to be more impressive and stick in mind more, this might secure you the memorability bonus and fake perfect methodology and composition as it conceals smaller errors like line or perspective ( e.g you can absolutely fake a good pencil sketch with intense shading even if the proportions are off) -get as much feedback as you can in choosing art works for your portfolio, it is good to show people who don´t know your thoughts about pieces because the school will also not have access to your head when looking at the portfolio and often the first impression counts -don´t start the night before the due date like I did :D good luck

Also don’t talk about your work like that, I can see how much effort you put in every single one of the paintings, they might not have come out great but that’s fine!! You’re beginning your journey as an artist and already have a good technique, I’m sure that next year you’ll be able to join the school! Just keep practicing and don’t give up. The important thing is to not give up! I dropped out of Art at college and regret it to this day. There was a lot going on and I didn’t like my tutor. Your work isn’t as bad as you may think - it just needs honed (art is a craft and skill people don’t appreciate) but it’s also about process. Like others have commented, you need to show that you have thought about your pieces and development of a “story” about your work. There are some issues with proportion in some of your work - practice figure drawings and breaking down the anatomy into “shapes” to get the right size and placements. That moving furniture sound almost gave me a heart attack since I live alone, haha, I'm laughing here by myself. Coming back to the topic, as others say, you have an artistic mind and creativity and I'd suggest taking some private lessons on drawing (it is the basic skill of a painter). With a bit of perspective, composition and anatomy, I'm sure you will get a chance. Also, it is very important how you handle color values, temperatures and the color relation. It is a lot of work, it took me almost 10 years to understand all the concepts that I've learnt in high school and and Uni. Draw and paint every day and if you can afford some courses or a private teacher before you apply next, go for it, it will help you reaching your goals and dreams.

I notice that most of the works lack in technical ways but one or two of the paintings, to me, like the time one, look just like some of those rough abstract paintings you see in art museums tbh you seem passionate to send messages across with your art so i think you can go very far!

Don’t be too harsh on yourself ,everyone creates work they are not proud of. Ones of yours that really stuck out to me were : the collage work ,the time abstract painting ,the bird with trash displayed inside it. I feel like it is the lack of experimentation that let you down and that is something you can improve on. Don’t stress over it ,use the same pieces and give them a new purpose. Use different colours in different pieces ,work in different surfaces and medias and make the work more conceptual. So instead of just A2 flat surfaces you can try ,digital ,sewing stuff, combining the realism with abstract ,make sure you have a variety of different styles.

Props to you for sharing this. There is a lot to be improved, but my biggest advice is to give your paintings/drawings more depth. Dare to make dark shadows and very light highlights. Most of the works you showed in the video above are quite flat, so that would defenitely make them 'pop' more. The best piece is "pretty back" and that is because you did add more dark shadows :). As for portraits and such, please please take a look at Proko's video on how to draw a head with the Loomis method. I promise you, look at that video once a day for a month and draw one face a day and you will see a ton of improvement. Don't take fancy paper or media, just grab a piece of paper somewhere and a pen or pencil and go with it. Don't make the drawings too big, just go for quick sketches and try to learn the proportions a bit. Then maybe over time, you could take a look again at this video while making a new one and show how you improved. Good luck

Thanks for making this video. What I would do is do a bunch of master drawings and paintings to learn technique, shape etc. I would look at a lot of art books and study the styles and copy the drawings and paintings in there. I would study anatomy and life drawing. Maybe there are classes near you where you can work on life drawing and gesture drawing. You can look into other things like composition, color theory, value etc. Just my opinion as a former art instructor and art school grad. Best of luck to you!

Hello, I don'think all your work is bad at all. I think you need to discover your "direction" and what you want to say with it. The self-portrait is, in my oppinion, great. Some would make good illustrations for books etc. Don't give up, if it's really what you want. Many renowned artists have been refused entrance to art school! Good luck. I (not at all renowned) was refused first time round as I chose the wrong school. A year later I was accepted and did 4 years of art school

I enjoy your sense of color esp. with regard to orange and blue next to each other. I notice your compositions are very centralized. You need to check this tendency. You don't have to put everything in the center. Also, you tend to like lighter colors. I do too, but you need to develop a variety of valves.

Practice more and put more work and time into it, art is a long process and with time and work your eye will be able to tell what looks good and what looks bad....way to go, keep it up

hey , you shouldn't say that you're say because you think your art isn't good! I think you are on a really good path and you just need a little practice! BTW you are brave to show your rejected portfolio and thank you for doing it! It is nice to see all kinds of portfolios and what exactly the professors want to see.... I think there is so much misinformation on that...And each university has different standards. Me personally I would like to enter to Uni Arts in Helsinki Finland. They only need max 8 pieces of artworks and it is VERY hard to get in. Good luck to me.

I haven't finished watching all this yet, but jumping in with: your work is uneven as in some good elements & others pictures too basic, so you need more development, experimentation, etc. You're critiquing (& saying all is really bad isn't helpful or true) them without pulling out the good bits and working out areas of improvement, so I will say some comments on this. The portrait of red top is a good composition, the hands are excellent. The black isn't boring because it is a interesting shape that is the right size for the striking portrait. Some of the portraits are interesting and command attention of a viewer. The self portrait where your hair is half orange is a nice picture. Quite a few of the portraits have a liveliness to the figure that captures a viewer's attention. The pencil drawing of a face reminds me of preliminary drawings of people who did the "drawing on the left side of the brain" course (it is also a book). So what you need is some drawing classes with a good teacher and you will quickly improve a lot. With photography, to learn more in a class or KZfaq or books or in a group would help you develop technical and composition skills.

just keep practicing and you'll get there. start drawing from observation instead of memory, I think that would help you with proportions. :)

There are good textures there. Also as a concept the toilet paper roll has a lot of potential. Try to learn some anatomy and fundamentals of drawing, Let me share with you some books. Also see another artists ( i mean great artists) , try to observe them a lot and learn copy and learn, obviously without forgetting about developing your own style.

Practice makes the masters... Just keep working on your technical skills go through the art history and get some inspirations od techniques and motives you like... I can see an improvement on myself... Unfortunately I don't have much time but every time I draw or paint something I can feel the improvement even if it is just small one

"Plastic Death" has a lot of potential, as well as the whole plastic series. It's easy to forget how serious a problem plastic pollution is, and what a tremendous challenge we have to overcome it. It would be good to see more of your passion for a subject instilled into your art. The plastic series can use several approaches, danger, humor, ugliness, transformation, spirituality. I thought maybe you were tending towards a humorous approach. If so, I guess it would help to emphasize ironies and expectations. I thought the island tree was hilariously disformed, and the tortoise chugging a soda could have been a little more involved to bring interest to the scene. "Plastic Death" could perhaps use more detail & contrast; it looked like it wanted to be more abstract though, so maybe it doesn't need as much composition as the Island and the tortoise. Just some thoughts from my jagged corner of the world.

You will get there !!! :333 Maybe you could find some courses, also you could you try read (watch) some theory about drawing and painting. Personally it helped me a lot.

My dear don't be so harsh on yourself, actually my portfolio wasn't that far from yours when I got in college, i would recommend to try working on chiaroscuro for your drawings and maybe try using a middle tone paper if it's hard at first. I think it's better keep your document with just paintings and drawings or maybe put the photos at the end as an extra, i also think you could use them to do something interesting as your last painting, like a collage or so~ other than that, i think you should just take your paintings at the same level of detail as the last picture you showed because it was really cool~

A small rant from a stranger on the internet: I think art schools are flawed, same as film schools - they seek people who want to learn, and reject those who do? You might say ‘ok, but they seek the best.’ But if they seek the best, how can you judge they “best”. All art is up to interpretation by the viewer and someone’s bias affects everything. Personally I greatly dislike photorealism paintings as the biggest compliment you’re going to get from me is ‘wow it looks like a photo.’ But the painting that looks like a photo literally means you’ve mastered how light works, well I don’t care because I don’t like it and would choose something more rudimentary in comparison. Your art is fine. And I like it. Art schools are popularity contests and don’t encourage individuality (at least from the brief experience I had).

There were some good ones. You just needed to not submit a bunch of the fails (and we all make fails! haha). If you just submitted the gems you would have gotten in - I recognize that you might second guess yourself because some of the concepts seem a bit unoriginal and I feel like if you just trusted your instinct for exactly what you wanted to make/paint, then you would be able to reason an authentic concept from the work after its completed - most artist do that its called post-rationalization and its not cheating.

Imo the paintings are good, just overall they lack coherence and a sense of experimentation. From what I gathered art schools don't need you to have perfectly detailed drawings, or perfect technique. They want to see you try different mediums, different perspectives, etc. In you portfolio (dunno if it was in order) you start with some portraits and dreamy landscapes. Then you add a random photograph and suddenly you do ocean waste. Your ocean waste paintings also look very mismatched, they're calming, sweet, bright, which just doesn't make sense for the topic. And then you do some more random stuff. Maybe if you put the ocean waste stuff at the beginning of the map, had them a little bit darker, tried something like a sculpture made from feathers and waste, or some other ways to tackle the topic. Then put the rest at the end, to show off some other topics you like, the whole thing would've made more sense and might have had better chances to be accepted.

It seems what was missing was maybe a bit more pieces with deeper personal meaning to you. For example, pieces illustrating struggles you’ve gone through, or memories that evoke a strong emotion. Maybe some pieces drawn from a different perspective, like looking down at the subject or from an unusual angle. From my obsessive research, I know art schools are also looking for sketches of gestures/poses and detail still-life that shows knowledge of lighting and shade. You are being way too hard on yourself, and I do the same. But honestly your art is lovely. I think you just had to add a bit more variety in the subject, things that are more personal, and loose sketches. I recently learned about how using certain color palettes can help a piece evoke a certain emotion, like using reds and oranges for anger or blues and purples for a sad piece. I really love Ocean of Dreams; the colors beautifully complement each other, and although Under the Moon does not look so technically correct in some areas, it is also very magical looking 🥰 makes me feel like I’m in a dream; it looks like the art style of a magical childrens book. Pretty Back is beautiful and you’re very talented at drawing fabric. Lights and Music is dreamy and magical and makes me feel calm. Delicate is also gorgeous, and a great portrait. Corona’s Masks not be amazing, but I like the idea of showing what people were spending their time on during lockdown. Gen Z has an interesting and current concept, and the hand anatomy is great. I’m the worst at drawing hands haha. Plastic Island may have a commonly used concept but has lovely detail in the water. Consuming Nature is one of the best pieces for sure and the detail and chaos is very interesting. I also agree with one of the comments here about schools being way too harsh on art portfolios to apply for a program that’s supposed to teach you. You clearly have talent and vision, and I’m proud of you for sending your portfolio. Ive been so nervous about mine not being good enough that Ive spent the last few years working on my portfolio and not even sending it because I was so sure they wouldn’t accept me anyway. I would suggest looking up some videos and articles on what to add in a portfolio for art school, making a checklist, and creating some pieces specific to the checklist. I’m actually applying for an art course in Berlin for winter 2022 and nervously finishing up my portfolio. Much luck to you in your endeavors :) ✨✨

You know, the subject don't always matter. You care about ecology, that's important. Now that you have a subject, you have to work on how you realise it. Try to work directly from real life (and not from photographs you haven't taken), from somewhere where that garbage is in the outside, where it impacts biodiversity. Try to do a lot of them to do a selection of your favorite works at the end. You will see your evoluton throughout your many works and build something really interesting. Keep trying ! :)

Judging art is difficult because it's so subjective. An average 'non-art' person looks at Picasso and they think it's crappy. Personally, I like your art... the orange picture is actually very interesting! The first ocean painting with the wrong paper would be also very interesting! Even the toilet paper cardboard (this is exactly what art is!!!): you made something beautiful from 'crappy' paper!!! Remember the banana that sold for millions of dollars. I would rather spend those millions on that toilet paper cardboard. Art school is only good if you're planning on getting into Academia. If you want to be a professor, then go for it and work on things that they want to see. But if not (unless it's a law in Germany), then I say it's a waste of money. There are better ways to develop a career, online classes, arteliers, getting a mentor, apprentice with an artist who you want to be like. This path is difficult and tedious because you have to do a lot of your own research, but it's far more worthwhile. IMO. Goodluck and it's very brave and kind of you to post this. Mir persönlich hat das Bild von der Person mit der Flasche am Besten gefallen. Das hatte sehr viel Lockerheit und interessante Formen und insgesamt eine interessante Komposition. Stellenweise bist Du wirklich gut im malerischen Umgang mit Farbe, also dein Pinselduktus ist interessant und wie du Farben vermalst. Was genau die Professor:innen sehen wollen, ist immer schwer zu sagen, so dass Du Dich auf jeden Fall mehrmals und an mehreren Stellen bewerben solltest. Mach deine Arbeit bitte nicht komplett runter

Ok, your art is not that impressing but what I really like is your attitude! Just keep on exploring and God knows where you will end up? And by the way, life is not about getting approval from others but finding your own way to meaning and satisfaction in life.

There is not a lot of theory, structure, and color harmony in your pieces. You tube has a lot of tutorials for anatomy (wireframes, foreshortening, proportions, etc.), you must also work on your value composition / thumbnails so that your works do not look flat. I highly suggest you also touch on perspective drawing so you can create better environment concepts, and then also watch videos and read about color theory and shading different materials. For the photographs, art schools like to gauge your natural aptitude with manipulating the setting, framing, composition, lighting, perspective. I suggest you begin experimenting with aperture, shutter speed, and ISO first then you can move to strobing. I liked your "Time" piece, the color harmony is calming, but I think you could have made the hourglass standout more with impasto. Gen Z is also pretty good conceptually, although it is quite a common metaphor - the anatomy is not bad, it's not realistic, but some artists specialize in stylized art. What is off with this piece is the color palette that is very muted. I think for something that would represent Gen Z (young people) the colors should be more vibrant and saturated. Try using red or purple tones for the shadows instead of gray. For other creative input on conceptualization, you can read on composition elements (i.e.: contrast, juxtaposition, silhouettes, etc.) Also, think very carefully of how you title your pieces; that shows the depth and concept of your work and lets the viewers form their interpretation of your pieces. Sometimes, it is also helpful to utilize creative literature. You can research on "bent/straight image captions"I hope you continue to make art regardless of whether you get accepted or not, because I think it is something that you love and makes you happy. Are you going to be applying to art school again? I made it to the third round for the third time for one school lol. I realized the art that was accepted had the certain style they went for rather than my style (realism).

Just do more youtube videos, that was the best I have laughed at a video in ages! haha the whole thing was comedy gold. fair play for being so self aware and critical of your own work, I have no doubt you could get in next year if you applied yourself, but I would urge you to just keep making hilarious vids like this and keep making the vids where you critique your bad art and submitting it everywhere you can ahahhaah it is a good skill to laugh at yourself, and you make other people like me who is crap at art have a laugh as I can relate haha.
