We see a similar toxic relationship in devdas but Parvati leaves him forever. Her love is always there for him and she shows concern for him more than anyone in the world but she stood up for her self esteem. Devdas goes down the path of self destruction and dies. It's tragic but it also teaches that if you treat a woman bad or without respect she'll leave you and you can't blame it on her. Your self destruction and state of life is 100% the consequence of your decision

A small detail for bulbul : she was not her mother but “pishima” which means that she is her father’s sister in the toe ring scene.

The problem with Kabir Singh is not the characters. Ofcourse, characters can be flawed. But how after watching the movie, many ppl see Kabir as the HERO. That's problematic...

Yes.. At least ONE reviewer said that the 'Horror' that lies in Bulbul comes from the all the abuses and mistreatment towards a girl child in the society, not from the shitty jump scares or the screeches of funny looking ghosts sticking to the walls.

Glad that your perspective on bulbul is improved. All girls I know have been deeply impacted by the movie. It's emotionally horrifying. We tend to judge horror movies by scariness or ugliness, but bulbul horrifies you for days with its Curt commentary about a life of woman in our society. More horrifying is the fact that so many women undergo even worse than what bulbul went through in their marriages.

The only problem with Kabir Singh was that a toxic relationship was glorified, which eventually led to a happy ending. If people in our country are aware enough not to get influenced by this, it's fine. But in a country like India where a woman gets raped in every 22 mins, we can't surely say that a section of people wouldn't get influenced by this. In the movie, the character of Preeti was okay with it but how to make Roadside Romeos of our country, understand, that in real life, not every girl is Preeti. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Also leave alone relationship, he wasn't a great friend or a son either, which is kinda justified in the movie. Everyone gets back to him, no matter how he treats them 😂.

While her journey is horrifying no doubt, the fascinating part about the way it was presented was the reflection of society on how they look at women as witches(chudail) if they dare to toe the line, prompting a literal "witch hunt". Makes one think, what's scarry the chudail who avenged her perpetrators that the whole village was petrified of, or what happened to the "normal" girl, bulbul who followed all customs dutifully.

As a female, I was deeply disturbed after watching Bulbul and I hated your review because of the same but now I'm very happy and proud of following you because not only did u address the "wrongs" in some of your reviews, but also instead of justifying it you accepted it! You are a real MAN and you should be proud of it😁💕

The problem with Preeti's character is that the plot dictates her autonomy instead of the other way around. She is submissive when Kabir is claiming her in the classroom because it is not yet time for conflict in the plot. She is aggressive in defending her chastity from the man she marries because the plot requires her to be 'pure' for Kabir. Honestly, in the end of the film, when Kabir says she would gladly raise her child, I actually began to respect the film, thinking they were finally letting Kabir face the consequences of his action. But instead they copped out by revealing that the child was Kabir's and Preeti and her laundry were both 'untouched'.

This guy has taken *CONTENT* to another level now....

Where the movie makers went wrong in Kabir Singh was them glorifying his character, and that 'hero' shade for that character was completely unnecessary.the Bollywood and tollywood industry makes movies where heros are treated like gods who can never do anything wrong, so it makes the younger audience to believe that it's alright to not respect consent or to be in a toxic relationship.

I’m glad you change your perspective on bulbul. This movie hunted me so deeply I can't even explain to anyone how It makes me felt. I was studying the age of consent act, 1891, Phulmoni Dasi (child bride) case. And with the same set of thoughts and notions, I watched this movie and it just shook me from inside. It was the same feeling when I watched pinjar and I was very young at that time it still gives me goosebumps.

I still don’t like Kabir Singh and probably never will. I do agree that there are girls like Preeti and their life choices shouldn’t be subjected to my privileged judgements but the reason why I hated the movie so much is because of the kind of effect it had on people around me. Boys in my class had turn into wannabe Kabir Singh’s. Many girls glorified and fetishised a relationship like that. People celebrated their relationship. The thing is that the youth of our country has never been taught how to love by our parents or guardians since most of us aren’t even allowed to fall in love to begin with. This movie normalised and sexualised toxic behaviours-many immature, young girls and boys feel into toxic relationships because they thought this was ok that this was an ideal relationship. IT IS NOT. Kabir and Preeti need therapy. This movie isn’t the only movie that has normalised such toxic relationship. Many main stream Bollywood movies have always been notorious for such blasphemy. What shocked me is that I didn’t expect a movie like Kabir Singh to be made at that level especially in this time and age. The story could’ve went in depth to show the toxicity of Kabir’s character instead of playing a badass music( WADA wow wow) to make his actions seem cool and macho. Kabir’s character is freaking load of shit and he should’ve been portrayed as such not as a macho cool guy.

Actually the perspective totally change when a series/movie viewed for the second time. There are some movies/series which actually are excellent if you view it for the second time.

Good to know that you were able to rethink Bulbul. Horror needn't necessarily mean supernatural, in many cases it is caused by humans too and that is what I loved the most about Bulbul. About Kabir Singh, the simple presence of another angry guy getting screentime was my main peeve with it and so I completely avoided it - completely fine if others are hoping to see such characters on screen and such movies, provided this doesn't lead to glorification and imitation.

I had watched Arya 2 in class 6 as my first Telugu movie. I loved it-Allu Arjun's dance, Kajal Agarwal's cuteness and the twists and turns in the movies But when I rewatched it after 10 years, I found Allu Arjun's character- Arya as that of a stalker yet he is glorified in the film

A fictional character is allowed to slap a girl or even kill her for the purpose that it’s a movie. And they can even get a happy ending. Although I don’t really consider it a happy ending. I think they both would’ve been miserable after marriage. Kabir lost his profession which he worked hard for and he’ll be depressed and self loath when the reality hits him that he is no more a doctor. And in that he’s again going to start drinking and harass preeti but now they will have a child together making things worst.

Such a nice take at your own journey! Review on Bulbul is so much appreciated. As for Baala, I think you're still little off. Your argument is that Bhumi should have stated the point that all colors are beautiful in her own complexion. What you're missing is that you're already aware and are able to overlook something as silly as complexion to define a person. But this is not true for all the audience. For so many people, this point needs more of highlighting as the complexion gets darker. For a girl who has been societally conditioned to feel insecure in her really dark complexion, she needs to see Bhumi with a similar complexion not at all worrying about it and taking on the world (like being an advocate or shaming people for their outdated ideas) with such confidence. For Kabir Singh, I still feel the character justification for Preeti is off. When Kabir comes in class and announces that Preeti is for him, her not objecting to it is a terrible preset for a young generation to see. I think it still comes from a position of privilege and ignorance when you try to justify that it's okay and some girls silently like it when a guy forcibly comes and announces their fondness for them. If she is not visibly objecting, it should not be taken as a silent consent. What if someone is genuinely uncomfortable and embarrassed and unable to express their feelings? Like in every workspace, we have etiquettes and professionalism, India especially needs to see dating as a very normal cultural thing where conversational or intimate exchanges need to be respectful and consenting. We have a long way to bridge the gender inequality gap (and I mean from both ends, needs to get better for both men and women) but please let's not try to put a silent consent kind of spin to such atrocious masculine toxic behavior.

Okay i rewatched Rockstar just yesterday , last time i watched was maybe 5 years ago and my god the difference in my opinion is poles apart . Until yesterday i had an image of the movie as an absolute masterpiece ( still think its a good movie) but now i think its not that great as i used to think it was . Another movie i would like to mention is YJHD , I did not like the movie when it came out but it has become of one of my all time favourite now . I think its because we grow up and learn stuff and face reality and we only like the movies which reconnects to what's going on in your life and so on .

yesterday I finally watched Padmaavat. i remember when the trailer came out, all the controversies were going on for this film. so i wasn't quite interested in this movie not because of their religious or controversies, but i wasn't into historical drama at that time. but i finally watched and then wondered wtf was the protest and controversies were all about. cause i didn't saw any disregard to any of the religious or made a blunt comment on any historical people or anything !! so i was really shocked that i really enjoyed watching this movie. and also, i think the writers and directors wanted to give the message about Jauhar rituals. that it happened for a reason and it should have ended as soon as ruler thing ended. when democracy started, this thing shouldn't have continued. anyhoo, this is my recent view and story.

I generally watch a movie after seeing your review. But I am so glad I watched Bulbbul before. Was really upset after watching your review. I am glad to see you give it, its due credit. In fact, you could make a separate video for it, as films like bulbbul need a lot more praise and publicity.

The one thing I'm glad about and it's the fact that a part of the audience has started admiring flawed characters and seeing things from their perspective and calling out heroes and protagonists of their toxic behaviors. People have started to criticise Raj from DDLJ, Bunny from YJHD and many more heroes. While I've no problem with the characters, but these characters are often glorified and put on a pedestal that people worship them and when they're criticized, people lose their minds. I'm a big fan of Malayali actor Dileep. But looking back, it's obvious that some of his films both hits and flops had a lot of women derogatory elements and cheap humor under the guise of innocent humor. It's refreshing to see that audiences are starting to see things in a bit more critical sense and demand for better content.

I was really sad when everybody was telling that bulbbul is not a horror movie. Because for me a less than ten year old girl is getting married to a man more than triple of her age was terrifying , a girl getting brutally beaten by her husband was scary , a girl getting raped by her own brother-in -law was horrific and that conversation of borobou with chotobou was... And the saddest part was those were not some random stories but the truth in many cases. The only thing was they could have used more bengali conversation with subtitles..

When I first saw highway I just thought about alia's characters but when rewatched I was also concerned about randeep hooda's character too

My first reaction after watching Sanju was "It's glorifying the Munna" No doubt performances were perfect..

Tamasha was the one for me, I remember watching it in the theatre in 2015 as a 13 year old and getting absolutely bored by the proceedings and I also remember my uncle telling me that I'd change my mind if I watched this film in 5 years. I watched it again during the lockdown last year and to put it simply, my uncle couldn't have been more right.

Kabir Singh is problematic since the start but everyone still says 'he Isn't glorified or justified'🤡🤣🤣

The main problem with Kabir singh is that they had deleted some scenes where he was less toxic like shiva explaining his father Kabir's life after break up and Kabir telling shiva , guy(choosen for marriage)was not good for his sister as he ( that guy) objectified air hostess and these scenes were present in Arjun Reddy which made him less toxic and more justifiable but in Kabir singh not only they didn't delete problematic scenes but also they deleted scenes where Kabir was less toxic .

Praiseworthy for Anmol to come out and accept he was wrong in a few of his initial analyses. I think this is also a wake-up call to "passive" audiences who rely on reviews to be the be-all and end-all and frame their opinions of films/series completely based on a review. At the end of the day, reviews are just opinions, albeit expert ones which may sometimes change like it’s been highlighted here. It’s important that we form our own judgements and then watch reviews to see if they support or oppose our opinions

This happens mostly for some of the old movies which we once considered to be classics and when watched now, we don't feel the same magic or whatever way we felt earlier. It's mainly because the requirement of we audience keep changing with time and hence movies evolve too. The movie which we now regret appreciating earlier might have been created keeping in mind wat the audience needed at that point of time. But some masterpieces are timeless ❤️.
