American here. I had real trouble following this accent. Reminds me of the summer I spent over in London years ago. I thought I'd get there and everyone would sound like the royal family, but no such luck for me.

@@lukem118 - Yes, Downton Abbey! Watched it all the way through at least three times. The upstairs accents were elegant and very easy to understand, but most of the downstairs accents were pretty easy to follow as well.

Jackjude ... yes, it actually is a lazy trope... because many observational comedians rely on lazy tropes. Comedy is a very tough business and a lot of the time it's easiest to rely on lazy tropes in order to connect with the audience.

Indeed these are the comedians who are for people 'who like a laugh', but don't really follow comedy - I don't mean that in a disparaging sense; as they would be bored shitless by the ole tropes wheeled out on a BBC compilation. The dynamic is consensual, laughing in agreement, rather than surprise, shock or discomfort.

It's all a bit out moded. Has been for years (middle class having 3 strata - where did they come from, where did the middle class come from?) demigraphics is more up to date. And of course you can get to change it!? It called social mobility, over the last 40 years Universities have been "full" of kids who's parents were working class, like mine.
