The importance of timing is critical for any swordsman--no matter the weapon you prefer. In this video I provide a drill you can use to develop that essential sense of timing within yourself.

Sir I have to say that the day my friend told me about your channel was an excellent day for my rapier skills. Thank you very much for putting so much work into your videos and for sharing the wealth of knowledge you have gained along the way. I really look forward to learning more from you.

You are quite welcome. And there are more videos yet to come. With the recent move back to the west coast, I find myself taking a bit longer to settle in between work, competing, teaching, and the castle property. But not to worry, balance will be achieved.

I'm with Blood + Iron, and our head instructor Lee Smith has talked about how incredibly skilled you are and that you're probably the best rapier fighter in the world. I'm really excited that you decided to start this series and to learn some more techniques!

Are there other drills do you do with the hanging tennis balls?

I use those tennis balls a great deal and for a number of different drills. What you see in this video is just a simple drill for timing, but I also use those tennis balls for footwork, point control and awareness drills. One simple drill for point control is to stand before those three tennis balls so they are all before you arranged right to left. Then lunge at each. While they are still swinging, go back to the first and lunge again. Great for establishing that intercept ability so often necessary when fencing an opponent who isn't going to be so kind as to just stand still for you. Another for both point control and timing is for you to stand before a line of tennis balls such as what you see me doing in the beginning of this video. Get the first two tennis balls swinging, then lunge through them to strike the third and recover before the other two tennis balls swing back and hit either you or your extended sword. As I said, there are many drills I use this arrangement of suspended tennis balls for. I find them to be an excellent means to practice even for just a few minutes out of my day when I don't necessarily have time for more.

Technically, the time of the swing remains constant, the length of the arc diminishes with time. ~ ~ HLS Carys, DWS et. al., engineer IRL.

Still a great drill, though!

Not sure I'm tracking what you mean. My intention was to convey the time you have to step through becomes less and less on each subsequent swing as the tennis ball loses momentum.

@@RobertChildsRapier The period (the time to takes for any pendulum to get from one end of it's swing to the other) is exactly the same on each swing. The distance it travels in that time is smaller each swing, and eventually too small to get through in a straight line. It's pedantic point, but a relevant on with this lesson, in that you can set up a rhythm in your head, and if you maintain that metronomic rhythm, you'll always know where the ball is. Which is, if I understand your lesson, the point. Thanks for these, by the way. I'm liking all of them. Except maybe the 'Feint/Disengage' video. You teach a counter to that and I am done in fencing! ; >
