That moment when you need to hear the most obvious thing because in the other way you would never realise it yourself... Thank you very much!

You're describing what the early 17th-c Italian master would describe as a 'counter-guard.' If you have access to a copy of Salvator Fabris, he explains these concepts in his chapter on 'Finding' and 'Counter-Guards.' If you haven't read them, it might be worth a read.

Appreciate the info. I know I have found it to be a concept that works in practice.

Nice! I’ve been running a Threat & Ward drill to teach a similar concept, while trying to improve reaction time! 😊

The least fun part of training is the repetition we have to put ourselves through to build those proper reactions.

That's enlightening! How might you adjust for left handed fighters?

You are the second person to ask that question. There is indeed a different position I use for the dagger when dealing with lefties, and the exact position is dependent upon whether they are low, middle or high guard fighters. Since this is much easier to show than to tell, it makes me think I might have to do another short video to effectively answer your question.

Recently posted a video to address your left-handed question. I show how I adjust my adaptive dagger positioning for fencing a lefty, which is the same perspective and application for a left-handed person fencing a right-handed opponent.

@@RobertChildsRapier Thank you! As Sun Tsu totally once said, "The art of war teaches us to rely not on the likelihood of the lefty's not coming, but on our own readiness to receive him." (Also, I fight lefty a lot, but still need to learn the ins and outs of it.)

Against mid guard in 4:14, why not lower the dagger hand itself while keeping the point high?

Good question. With the position you describe, it would initially lock your opponent out on the low line. But from that position it would no longer be a flick of the wrist (which is fast) to switch and cover the high line. Instead I would have to raise the hand to cover that area, and further perform some counterparry action with the blade of the dagger, when my opponent ultimately attacks that high line. Try practicing it on your own to see what I mean. Put your hand in the position you describe with the hand low and the dagger blade pointing high initially. Then have your practice partner disengage or crossover to attack you high and you will see that your whole arm has to be engaged to try and track that movement. This is a slower option than positioning your dagger such that you need only turn your wrist to change from locking them out low to locking them out high. Fencing is measured in fractions of a second. Every fraction you spare yourself is an advantage you gain over the adversary.
