In this video you get an inside look at one of my signature attacks I have nicknamed the Jack-in-the-Box, a highly effective technique that utilizes a combination of surprise and stealth. Here you will learn how to perform the maneuver and the kind of fencers who are vulnerable to its use.

Hey Rob :) Thanks for the video! Great explanation of the tactical approach and strategy used. I regularly feed my clubmembers with your videos even if we don't do rapier, as I find it very useful to translate these concepts to longword/sidesword, plus it usually provokes healthy discussion (what type of modification it needs for a specific weapon, style etc). Its good, clear, short and straight to the point ;) Greetings from Ireland! Andrzej

Thanks much, Andrzej! And you are right. I discovered a long time ago that all swordfighting comes from the same place. As such, most of every concept, tactic, technique and strategy I speak to in these videos are applicable also to longsword--and other weapons as well. It is just a matter of proper application depending on the weapon in hand.

Im curious how well this move would work in foil fencing

In Olympic foil you will find this attack less effective because only the torso is a valid target area in foil. Hit anything else and you just waste the effort. Further, an experienced foil fencer is trained to protect only this area. If you threaten the lead leg, they are more likely to respond with a thrust toward your torso since you leave yourself open by feinting toward the leg. In the next moment you both hit, they the torso and you the leg, but your opponent is the only one who gets the points because they hit a valid target area with right-of-way.

feint low underneath the foil guard and go high to the shoulder usually works.
