The Critical Angle is a vulnerability that allows me to take control of my opponent's weapon and I see this mistake made by fencers of all different styles all around the world. In this video I define the critical angle and demonstrate, with the use of tournament footage, how not only to use it to your best advantage, but how to prevent falling prey to this mistake yourself.

Great presentation. Boxers with a wobbly long guard are susceptible to this too, particularly if you make a half-step to the outside and forward, effectively getting a cross counter against them out of nothing.

How relevant, I managed an exchange yesterday in sword and buckler where I instinctively found the critical angle by cutting at my opponent, opening it up with his parry, which I was really proud of, and thrust him in the throat perfectly. I was thinking to myself that I was taking it from my rapier fencing, and I most surely was considering this. My opponent having a buckler changed it up a little, but I knew which time when his sword pointed away from me that I could exploit. Thanks, Rob.

Thanks for your clear and detailed explanation of this technique. I think it will be very useful for me in my smallsword work. Since finding your channel recently I’ve started thinking about my fencing in a different way . Thanks again!

Always happy to help. As I have said to my own students many times, all swordplay comes from the same place. Though most of these videos are speaking to combat in rapier, the lessons therein are absolutely applicable across the spectrum of bladed combat.

Responding with pressure against any superior bind is always bad, and you should disengage or yield, as Rob says here.

I loved this video. Thank you especially for the slow motion of the second clip. I hoped to ask, when you defend against this kind of attack on the critical angle, you showed going into 1. I wondered if you could advise me on attacking from prime, assuming a thrust-only rapier context (SCA). First ward (as we call it) violates the rule of keeping your point aimed at your opponent, and would clearly set you up for a cut. So far as I've been taught, First Ward is purely defensive when you are in too close of a measure, perhaps, and is only used so you can maneuver off line or backward for a better position. Do you know of a better way to counter attack from First Ward using a thrust? ...thanks in advance!

You are correct that the position of parry 1 sets you up ideally to follow up with a cutting riposte action to your opponent. However, it is also possible to thrust from this position as your opponent's blade begins to withdraw (that last bit is important for the timing of the thrust to be successful). The only caveat to this is you need to be rather flexible in the wrist. So if you imagine you are in the parry 1 position, and your opponent's blade has begun to withdraw, using your wrist and fingers you will now raise the point of your sword toward your opponent's target area (assuming the chest). As your tip rises you will turn the leading edge upward and extend at the elbow to carry you into the thrust. It is a bit of an awkward angle, truth be told, but with practice it makes for a quick thrust on the riposte. There are other options from this position as well but since you spoke specifically about the thrust then this is certainly the simplest.

I've seen this presented as invitation of 4th, and prima is not the best defense for it. First is distance, second would be a disengage to fourth assisted by the offhand and a riposte. The problem with prima is that it tanks your point so off line, it's hard to riposte with. Further, the rapier does still have an edge, so it opens you up to a cut on the wrist quite easily.

I get what you are saying, but I think you will find, as I did, there will not be enough time for the defense you suggest against an opponent who utilizes a no-tell lunge into this particular vulnerability. Precisely because of that no-tell, you are starting your movement well behind that of your opponent. The nice thing about rolling into prima (with a simultaneous step back, of course) is that it rolls easily and naturally into a cut.

@@RobertChildsRapier every lunge has a tell. There's a hand movement, a shift in weight, a turn of the foot. Further, if this works in Olympic foil and eppee, far faster weapons than a rapier due to weight, it is even more functional with a rapier. A tight disengage is far faster and easier to drill than the huge movement to prima. Plus, what is your riposte from prima? The point is far too offline to thrust unless you're going for the leg. So you're left with a very weak true edge cut (which I don't believe covers the wrist well enough from the remise), or a massive moulinetto which is easily countered. If those are my options I'd rather grapple, or grab the guard.

If you successfully defend a critical angle attack as you describe at the end, is a cut the best riposte?

It is the natural riposte, yes, given your sword is certainly primed for a circular cut (moulinet). But whether it is the best riposte is dependent upon what your opponent does, of course. :)
@tommyss4l
@tommyss4l Жыл бұрын
As I said above, try treating the defense as an invitation of fourth (disengage to a parry and thrust as a riposte). Prima is a very weak position for rapier, which is why no rapier treatise uses it that I know of.
