You can imagine how different men and women sepak takraw.

I’ve never heard of it before. Looks amazing - so unique, so talented.

The reason they spring up with their back towards the net as a defensive move is to protect their faces. A rattan ball kicked hard about 2 or less feet away, can break your nose. Further, although sepak takraw is popular in South East Asia for around 1,500 years, similar variations to it can be found in China. The sport has spread its popularity to Japan, Korea, Canada, USA, and other non-South East Asian countries. It actually has an international following now due to its spectacular acrobatics and kicks. Hope it gets into the next Olympic Games.

I love to see the aerial duels, so to speak, of the men's sepak takraw. Very athletic, acrobatic, and kung fu in many ways.

I'd imagine that they're pretty balanced in skills, though I'd like to see them compete together. Raw strength isn't much needed, is it? A hell of a lot of cardio and endurance, speed and flexibility. Women tend to be better than men at endurance sports: most long distance swimmers are women. Men tend to be faster and stronger than women.

The ball's speed in man's game is insane compared to women's game.

I agree! This is an awesome sport! There has to be more skill in a sport where you can hit the ball in so many creative and athletic ways! It makes our football and cricket etc look rather skill-narrow, doesn't it? It requires so much more quick thinking outside the box. Asian sports tend to be more 'thinking' sports. These types of sports should be added to the Olympics! They're also more fun to watch, I reckon! More fun than cricket, which is just bowl->hit->catch->discuss what just happened and congratulate themselves->rinse and repeat - right up there with watching paint dry. More fun to watch than football, which is (in Australia) basically watching a pile of testosterone-driven meatheads tackle each other, hug each other, scratch their balls, congratulate each other on how HE-MAN they are, rinse and repeat.

The defence always on the back is because it is s quite painful when someone is being hit by that ball. At that close range near the net, with the killer player does the spiking, it can leave painful red mark all over the body. So yeah, defence is more of luck. But in the world of sport science where opponent's game can recorded and replay, rival team can always study on how each team striker/ killer usually spike the ball so defence can anticipate much better.

As a girl who used to play this with my friends, all I gotta say is that that ball hurts like hell especially when you get hit on the head..
