In today's Roban EC130 RC helicopter build video, we'll be looking at the electronics pairings I've decided on; see how well the mechanics fit in the fuselage, and take the fenestron tail rotor apart to see how it works.
Overall fitment is pretty decent, but it's not perfect as you'll soon see with tail boom alignment.
Another odd thing with this particular Roban super scale 800 EC130, is there were no included battery trays, nor slots for battery trays. Hmmm... Looks like we have to come up with our own flight battery fitment solution/s.

Took My EC-135 out for her first flight today. End up discovering that I needed to put a few set screws in to hold the tail servo in place. Tail is so powerful, when I gave pitch to the rotor, the the entire servo holder moved instead of the tail itself. But after that, flew like a charm. Your videos have helped me out a lot, and this is the first time I’ve used the Bavarian Demon.

Hi Preirre, that is awesome you had your first maiden today 🙂👍 Interesting what you experienced with your tail servo sliding on the boom like that. Your clamps must be a little oversized is all I can think, but glad it was an easy fix. Enjoy it, they are good flying machines once you get them dialed in.

I’m happy to see that you had no fitment issues with your Fenestrom and that it aligns perfectly. I’ve been struggling with my Fenestrom on my Roban EC-135. It’s as if they placed all the mounting points for the frame 1/4 inch to far forward. Fins bind on the upper part and front of tail. So frustrating that I have to waste an entire day trying to fix this issue.

Tip on the x8r, you can use the outputs on the receiver as ch9-16 if you are using single line to the gyro. This is setup with the radio or with jumpers on bind depending on what firmware you are running for your x8r. Doing this allows you to use 1-8 to control the heli and the gyro then 9-16 to control what ever other addons you want.

Hi John, I enjoy the videos you make, keep'em coming.. Question for you... I see you selected the KST815 servos for the cyclics at 17kg/cm/7.4v, I heard that these 700/800 sportscales need around the 30kg/cm like the ds1220 servo they/roban recommends, but you opted for less torque, so do you feel that 30kg/cm is overkill?

Really interested in this build, already can't wait for the maiden. Love the engineering of the fenestron, not sure what rpm it gets up to but i wud use a thick grade gear oil or poss silicon grease as it might fling most of it off when at high speed? Great vid series thanks👍

Hi John, very good video and tkx for all info, regarding the tail servo, u select a 40kg version , what do u think if i use a razor-t1, it only got 30kg at 8.4v 5A ? Do u use those 2 screws that factory design to hold the front compartment? It is so clumsy for me to remove it each time when I need to charge batteries , I tried to add more magnets , but since the fibreglass is so think, the result is not as expected, may I know how u make it ? Thank you

@Rchelicopterfun 4 ай бұрын
You don't need an ultra fast tail servo on large scale helicopters and that would be my biggest concern with the T1. I suppose if you dialed in enough gyro delay it wouldn't be an issue. As Roban recommends, fenestron tail servos need torque above speed. 30kg is at the low end of what is recommended, but since I've never used it - I have no idea how well it will or won't work or how hot or stressed it will be, you would have to try it and monitor all that to get real world data. I use a pin on a small tether through the floor into a block underneath accessed through one of the doors to lock my Roban nose sections into place. Using screws each time would be such a hassle, I'd likely never fly the things 🙂

Hey John new watcher here . I am old school guy and flew schluter champions and excel back 20 years back but we always canted the tail rotor to the left a few degrees and had a lot more tail control and when turning it offset the tail with the little bit of lift you gain in turning instead of altitude drop when putting in a turn command. I have no experience with large electric helis just gas so just my opinion 👍👍
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, it all depends on the thrust direction from the tail rotor. With this heli, the tail rotor/fenestron is thrusting left to counter the CCW main rotor torque; so with the left lean, it would be pulling an already heavy tail boom downward. If it had a right lean, I would not be as concerned because it would then do exactly what you described, give the tail a little upward thrust vector.

@Anthony Smith, Yes, like most decent flybarless systems on the market, the Bavarian Demon 3X has multiple receiver connectivity options including Spektrum's DSM protocol satellite (remote) receivers. One DSM sat RX can be used in smaller helicopter, two can be used in larger helicopters where both spatial and polarization RF diversity come into play; covered in detail in my "RC Antenna" article on my website: www.rchelicopterfun.com/rc-antenna.html

Hey John great vid! Just finished up a logo 690sx yesterday, running bls815’s and an egodrift motor on it too. I run 815’s on three different machines. Awesome servos. Just a few questions. From your website and past vids, I know you like to fly the mechanics before putting them in the fuselage. With the fenestron, can you run it “naked” or does it have to be in the duct? Also can you even mount it without the tail section of the fuselage? I guess the question i’m asking is can you still fly just the mechanics, or will your maiden be with the fuse? Question #2: On your AS-350, it seemed like Roban used very poor quality bearings. Are you going to replace the bearings with high quality ones, or going to roll with the bearings provided? Funny story, I maidened the logo yesterday, flew three flights. She flew perfect. Crisp cyclic and collective, flew some loops, stall turns, a few flips. When i got her back home and put her on the bench, I saw to my horror that all the screws on the pitch servo (right cyclic servo) were loose! I had loosened them to route the esc wire between the servo body and the frame, and forgot to tighten them! Missed them on the pre flight too. The servo was very loose! That fbl unit earned its keep! 😂
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 2 жыл бұрын
@Dallas117. Glad to hear you have also had positive experiences with KST servos & Egodrift motors & had a a few successful maiden flights yestereday. 👍 Q1. As for if I plan to first test the "naked" heli mechanics outside the fuselage - stay tuned 🙂... But yes, I do plan on it. For the extra hour or so it takes to mount to a test platform, that in my opinion is time well spent to see if things are working correctly and ensure I didn't screw something up or forget something. Exactly like your loose right cyclic servo experience - I too sometimes miss things and stuff like that is even harder to detect & get to once everything is covered up & hidden by a fuselage. 9 times out of 10, it would be fine; but I'm a magnet for that 1 in 10 which would result in major fuselage damage or even a complete loss of it. There may be some efficiency loss by running the fenestron unducted, but I can't see it being substantial. Of course, I have no prior fenestron experience, so perhaps duct efficiency increase has a bigger impact than I expect? The more likely reality is without all that extra fuselage weight to lift, the tail rotor won't be working nearly as hard because there won't be as much main rotor reactive torque. Q2. I did a video a number of year back on the AS350 bearings and I've only had to replace the 2 main shaft bearings and the 2 primary tail drive gear bearings. Those are the only ones that needed replacement over the past 7 years of flying that heli, and they pretty much wore out in the first 20 flights or so. Not sure if they were just bad bearings, had crappy lubrication, or were just more stressed than all the others? The replacements from Boca Bearing are not showing any signs of play/wear. As for the rest of the bearings on the heli, none are showing play or black snot seeping out of them, so I really see no need to touch them yet. I'll continue to monitor them like with any machine and replace when they start showing signs. Have fun with your 690sx. 🙂

@Chris Ball - I thought I covered that in detail in the video @ 4:49. As stated, the 3X is hands down my favorite FBL system. It's a great value meat & potatoes system with no BS. I love the feel of it. I use them in all my large birds, so they are very familiar. Never had a single problem with any of them. Easy to program and easy to make your own programming communication harness. Lastly, since I don't use autolevel/rescue, I'm not going to pay an extra $150 for the Axon for a feature I don't need.

Heyyyy, those are some familiar-looking clear side markers in the background! Cool, update, John! What kind of flight time do you expect with the four batteries that you purchased? Do you always get just one set of batteries or multiple so you can swap them out for more flight time during one outing? Thanks for showing the insides of the tail rotor. Very cool-looking and intricate build! BTW, will you have to transport and store the heli with the tail boom attached or will you be able to disassemble things a bit to make storage/transport easier? Looking forward to the next vid!

At what position did you set up your tail? The max slide travel is 4.75mm. Does that mean I should set it up to be centered at 2.375mm at a starting point? Thanks for your help. This is my first scale heli build. I’m more into 1:5 scale turbine jets.

Same tail setup as I setup any heli; pitch slider centered with tail servo arm centered/right angle to boom, with equal amounts of throw on either side. Of course that's just my setup method and I'm not Roban Tech Support nor do I want to be. Also depends on the FBL system and if it calls for something not as conventional (always follow the tail setup in the FBL instructions/setup wizard for best results). 🙂

I'm probably over thinking this but I'm getting ready to start my hh60 700 build and just wanting to verify my intended headspeed. Looking at the roban diagram, it looks like the motor runs through a pulley system before it hits the main gear. Is there a different formula for accurately calculating this? Maybe I'm dumb and it will all make sense when I get my hands on it... 😂

Should the servo arms be metal or is that just a way to spend more money? The linkage being so close to the servo shaft surely should be secure enough.
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun Жыл бұрын
The instructions do call for metal servo arms, but I personally don't feel they are required. The ball links would snap under stress before the arms would. This is of course dependent on the specific plastic servo arms used. The red ones that come with the standard size KST servos are very beefy compared to others I've used. Anecdotally, I have also found that metal servo gears tend to wear out faster when used with metal arms; perhaps due to the plastic arms flexing a tad to absorb vibration energy from the rotor disc back-feeding into the servo gear train? Most certainly this is the case when a crash/blade strike occurs as more often than not, metal gears will be stripped in the servos when using metal arms; whereas more times than not, plastic arms will break saving the servo gears. Of course, use what you're most comfortable with in your specific build. 🙂
