G'Day Folks. Here's a look at how I've started to grow some veggies using a small Kratky hydroponic system on our deck.
This system is a bit of a stop gap measure until we get the aquaponics & soil gardens sorted out after renovation.
Hope you enjoy this gander at the Kratky system.
Cheers all & Happy Growing. 🐟 🌱🍅

Have you tried a pool noodle, sliced to size? Noodles are made from the same material as the clips you were using in the video Sliced like snake steaks , it makes a disk that fills the entire hole and gently holds the plant and expands as the plant grows. Here in the USA , you can easily find pool noodles in any discount store or toy dept at Walmart/ Kmart type store. Hardware/ Farm supply may have a very similar product for pipe insulation. Hope this helps save a few quid.

Great video, amazing it's 3 years old, I have only just found this Kratky system, so I plan to combined it with horizontally stacked PVC or treated bamboo hydroponic gravity setup to grow all my vegies as garden grown ones just aren't coping with our intermitent SEQ weather, also the plants I've seen produced this way look awsome, cheers for your ideas.

Rob, as the nutrient level falls, the roots that are exposed move over from being suppliers of liquid & nutrient to the plant to suppliers of oxygen to the plant. The best method to keep all the "oxygen roots" alive is to only top up with very small amounts of nutrient regularly. The best method (ie as in the least work) is to add a float valve 25% up from the bottom of your containers & feed your nutrient through that valve. This will ensure the "air roots" will not die due to a "flood". Also consider raising your pH with liquid silicon. Plants normally add silicon to the cell walls which makes them more resistant to pests & diseases & to stresses brought on by temperature extremes. Normally there is no silicon in pre-mixed hydroponics nutrients as it is very alkaline (pH 10 to 10.5). Add the liquid silicon to your water stock before adding your hydroponics nutrients. Liquid silicon is regularly used by commercial growers as it also extends the shelf life of their product. It helps to prevent tomatoes (for instance) from going mouldy from the inside to the outside. Commercial growers rarely talk about their trade secrets which is why you never/rarely hear about liquid silicon. Keep up your excellent videos.

Cheers for that Derek. Have seen a number of different float top ups on KZfaq. Dr Kratky has one on his channel that looks very easy to set up. 👍 I knew silicone is important for plant development but didn't recall seeing any additives at the store. Will have a better look next time. Cheers mate & happy growing.

@@RobsAquaponics Thanks Rob. Liquid silicon is not super cheap but a small amount goes a very long way. If you try the float idea, please give us an update. Of course you could organise for a single float to feed many of your containers all at once :) Keep up the great videos!

Great clip, it seems like you've tried just about everything over the years. Would it be possible to do a "lessons learned" or similar clip on all of the trade-offs and recommendations for different growing systems you've built? For example, what plants might do better in a root pouch vs aquaponics, or how do you decide what to put in a wicking bed? Also, I remember the straw bale gardening, what was the end result of that? Overall great job, thanks again for all your tutorials.

@@RobsAquaponics No but I am getting ready to set up a garden out here in the desert. I had to put the aquaponics on hold because of the job situation. The major problems out here are heat and pests. If you just grow a garden it will be completely consumed by pests. I'm planning to put in a 24' x 24' (7.3 m x 7.3 m) building frame with hardware cloth and screening and start with some raised beds. From there I will look into putting in place some aquaponics once I solve the problem of getting the water down to a temperature suitable for Tilapia. Summer temperatures average about 5F too high for Tilapia. You mentioned chillers last time but it seems expensive and complicated. Was talking to my uncle and he recommended burying circulating water pipes about 6' (2m) down. This might work and would only require a simple pump to operate. A _lot_ of digging though. :D

I think there may be a few issues with the bacteria & organics in the water so would turn putrid fast. I can see no issues with running it through a mineralisation process first then running it through an aerated hydro system though as in a decoupled aquaponic system. 👍

@@RobsAquaponics i would wonder then if there is any value in overcomplicating things in that way, or if all the experimentation is just converging to a fish farm as the water source for a garden. All my years playing with aquariums and aquaponics is leading me to stubbornly admit that a healthy pond or planted aquarium system with water changes flowing through to a garden patch would be the best way. Or maybe something like what the autopot folks did.

Many folks grow indoors using this method Patricia. 👍 I find that the tubs with the greens don't need to be topped up as there's just enough to get the plants through to be harvested. Hi, thanks for the video. I have tried a number of plants in buckets with water . They started okay but after a time began to develop yellow leaves. the roots on some plants also began to look pretty unhealthy and, in some cases, the water began to look a bit unpleasant with an almost oily surface appearance. I was carefully watching nutrient level and also pH. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? Did you say that you put in just half strength nutrients when growing in a bucket? Thanks
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not 100% sure what's happening there sorry Paul. Did you keep topping the level up or let it fall naturally? If you are topping it up it may be that the roots at the top aren't enough to take up O2 & that may cause a few issues. Any organic matter left to rot in the nutrient mix may be an issue as well. With ours I was using ½ strength nutrients & found that was enough for basic greens. 👍 I'm sorry I'm not much help mate & also that it took so long to get to your comment.

Hi, may I ask why you use perlite, and not clay pebbles? Which of the two would be more cost-effective?
@RobsAquaponics

I used the perlite in the smaller pots as it fits better than the larger clay balls. Clay would be Over time as it doesn't break up like perlite does. 👍

What are the nutrients made out of? It's why I find aquaponics so appealing because I know where the ferts come from
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 жыл бұрын
This company state that they use plant & fungus derived nutrients where they can so that's why I chose to use them. Fish feed is sometimes made with fish caught specifically to be turned into fish feed so it's not that sustainable either in that respect. That doesn't happen here from what I've been told by my supplier but I think it is a bit of a concern for those that are calling aquaponics the "sustainable answer" just to sell a course or product. Cheers MCMLH 👍😊

Hi Rob, thanks for the introduction and education about the Kratky system. Here's a question for you... Novelty and interest aside, if you had to depend on a method or 2 of production (because that was the only way you could eat) what would you pour all of your effort into? I guess I'm putting you on the spot to say which is the most effective method/s? Cheers......Dave
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave. I think I'd stick with wicking beds & aquaponics 👍 Aquaponics mainly for the fish & also the fast turn around of greens crops. Wicking beds as they conserve water, can grow a number of different crops & are don't rely on any power inputs like a proper circulating hydro or aquaponics systems do. Cheers mate.

Hi there. I'd take the suckers out & start them up in now containers or the ground if you can. Found out the hard way that the pouches will split if you leave too many in there. 😕 The only time id say leave it be is if the the mother stem starts to set fruit then the next sucker can take over. Hope that helps some.

Please forgive my ignorance if this is a stupid question. But do you have to worry about bad bacteria when doing something like this? Like in lettuce commercial hydroponic beds you sometimes hear of lysteria or ecoli or something else that causes a recall, is that something that can happen?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 жыл бұрын
I don't really worry. I've used manures of many different animals & urine in different growing situations with no concerns. I think the infections from hydro come more from processing the harvest but may be wrong.

Not an ignorant question at all & a legitimate concern (if you don't know) if you ask me. Those bacterial contaminants don't come from the water source. Which is not to say that it can't; but those recalls are usually the result of an individual with poor personal hygiene or resent exposure to these bacteria (in some rare cases, both).
