Pine Bark, interesting. The past year I've been collecting and adding the cutest little 2" pine cones on top of my blueberry pots as mulch. It's so cute. I didn't even think that my blueberries might like them. But now I have a much bigger problem. I now have 6 baby pine trees that have germinated and are growing in my blueberry pots.

Thank you for this my Brother! My wife and I just purchased our first piece of Real Estate. We bought a commercial building in the downtown section of our Borough and have exactly ZERO ground to plant anything in. Luckily we have a humongous southern facing balcony that gets direct sunlight all day long! I’m fixing to set up our balcony as an organic oasis of home grown yummy foods. My youngest is a Blueberry monster and I’m very exited to see that I can provide something for him in the limited space that I have available! Next, I’m seeking a self pollinating dwarf apple variety.

Hahaha, I live in São Paulo-BRAZIL and here we have mild winters with few hours of intense cold; I have blueberries planted in pots in the backyard, POWDER BLUE, CLIMAX, MISTY and Emeralds that have adapted better than the others. My biggest difficulty is keeping the soil always acidic, as blueberries like so much, they still bear fruit...😝👍

I've given up on these fabric bags. I used to think they're the best because there's been youtube videos talking about how good they are, but my experience proved otherwise. The outer edges dries up extremely quickly that you need to water every day, and if it's summer, you need to water it twice a day to keep the edges moist. Extremely time consuming if you have to water manually as well as extremely wasteful of water. Once these bags becomes too dry, it becomes almost impossible to re-wet the growing medium thoroughly. My plants never thrive in these bags. I prefer the green woven bags because it doesn't dry out that quickly but still allow for air pruning of the roots so the plant can never be root-bound no matter how many years you keep it in without re-potting.

Hey Rob, So I never liked the price of the fabric root pots and lack the sewing skills to DIY my own... But last year I grabbed 10 of those recycled polypropylene Wal-Mart reusable shopping bags for 25 cents each. To my surprise they air prune just like the fabric ones and I had success with potatoes! I'm sure you have a big box chain down there and the recycled poly bags are really cheap and are about 5 gallons each. They will degrade in the sun, id guess they would average 2 years if treated well... And they do tend to slump because of the lack of structural support. But it's a nice quick cheap solution if people want to have a go for pennies. I also use them as the liner inside my Dutch buckets to make clean up way easier, though you need to poke a few holes in them because fish poo can coat a film on them.

Hey Brandon. Started off with the store bags here as well but found they broke down in he first season. I like the Root Pouches as they will last for years + they're made from recycled water bottles. 👍 I was so happy with how they went I started to import them for sale here in Australia. 😉 Tend not to use the clips as a sales pitch though as I find it annoying when others do so. Brandon Carrion Not sure where you are but fabric pots can be purchased on Amazon (if US) or online for fairly inexpensive. They are 5-20x the price in stores I have seen.

Hey Rob. I got the Blueberry Burst too, arrived a week or so ago from Daley's. She's looking good in her Root Pouch and has a handful of little berries on her. Wasn't expecting to see any this season so haven't decided whether to pluck them off yet. Handling the mini heat-wave we're currently enjoying & those water-saving crystals are helping there. Good luck with your BB, we'll have to compare each others yield next year. Not that I"m competitive :)

I've tried growing blueberries and every single time they decide they would rather drop dead than grow for me. Funny how that goes. I had the growing wild at my former property but the moment I tried growing them they died. Your blueberry green thumb is a bit greener than mine. :)

Hey Rob, great vids man, nice channel to! I recently read that... Supposedly, blueberries do better in slightly higher PH ranges, contrary to popular belief, between 5.0 & 6.0 PH Plants grown in soil with a PH of 6 produced fruit with higher brix levels than that of the conventional 4.5 to 5.5 PH range. It had to do with better nutrient absorption of other nutrients at a PH of 6, without adversely affecting iron uptake. When all is said and done though, I haven't tried raising the PH of my blueberry pots by 0.5 to see if there is any noticeable difference in growth and I use the same soil you feature in this vid and i have some pretty good blueberries. Also not to Burst your bubble haha, but iv'e heard Blueberry Burst is a bland blueberry. Usually when a plant has been bred for higher yeild, there will be a sacrifice on flavour. What are your thoughts on taste? Revielle and PowderBlue have been the standouts in the flavour department for me, closely followed by Magnolia :) I wish we had Lowbush types here though!

Thanks for the info on the pH Laughing Man. Will have to suss that out. 👍 I have only had a few small berries from them so far & found them sweet but they were no where near the size they are supposed to get to. Will be interesting to see how they go once they set fruit next season. The only other plants we have are powder blue (that really needs to be re potted & get some TLC) & the unknown highbush in the barrel at the start of the clip. Hi I have been growing the burst for about 5+ years mine are well over 5 foot high and still growing bigger, from 5 plants iv been getting 1.5KG twice a week. great variety mixed with the Nelly Kelly (late bloomer) I get fruit for months.

Wow, the ending! thats what those things are lol im in Melbourne i got bored in lockdown grew a blueberry plant in a pot it looks like the one that native bee is in, so im guessing its doing good! i just dont know when to check the PH level.

Another Fantastic video my friend! I have been considering doing blueberries here on the Daddykirbs Farm as well. i like the potting mix recommendation, i only used the azalia/camilia mix with added cocopeat. next time ill be adding pinebark.

Looking forward to seeing how you go with these. I got one from Bunnings a year ago and I've been struggling to keep it alive in the original pot. The leaves keep going brown from the tips and I'm not sure why - first I thought I was under watering it so I gave it more water and seaweed fertiliser 2-3 times a week and that brought it back, even though it seemed a bit too much water/fertiliser, but now after getting fruit set the same thing is happening and cutting back the watering doesn't seem to make a difference. Still trying to figure out what the issue is so I'll be looking closely to see how you manage yours!

I bought a bag of SCOTT Azalea, Gardenia potting mix and when I checked the PH I found it was neutral (7 to 8). According to Scott, the PH is between 4.8 to 5.8. When I brought this to their attention they denied it saying that to test the PH of a soil, we need highly sophisticated and expensive equipment. I reported this to the Office of Fair Trading but no action has been taken. I request you to kindly check for yourself and post a video of your report. Thanking you

The soil in the pouches is very aged now so I couldn't do an accurate test as it wouldn't be accurate unfortunately Max.

Rob, have you had any problem with fruitfly in your blueberries. I didn't have a problem for most of last season (or previous 2), but for a couple of weeks I had probably ½ of them with grubs in - I stopped eating them off the bush for a while as a result.

Hey Alan. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I did have issues a few seasons ago so have started to drape insect netting over the plants when they fruit now. That does the trick against the QLD fruit flies for us. 👍 Sorry again for being so slack. Cheers & happy growing

Hi Rob! Thanx so much for this video! Love the energy! You fondly refer to the plant to your left (at the start of the video) as "the grand old lady". I have 2 similar looking plants... my question is... are they supposed to be so sparse in leaves (ie more woody than leafy)? Im at my wits end to get mine to grow more leaves... Im not sure of their ages, as I bought them online, but I suspect they're about 18-24 months.... Perhaps Im being impatient, or killing them with kindness?

Hi Malika. They do respond well to a pruning back of some of the older dead wood we've found. Once we nipped off some of the dead stems after fruiting we had a nice flush of new growth. I also like to feed the trees a few times a year with a top dress of compost as well. Hope that helps some.

Rob, Great video. I'm in Melbourne and have some blueberry plants in pots that I bought in winter with berries already on them. I am not sure if that has messed up the grow cycle but my blueberries just stay green. They never even look like turning blue. I water them regularly, keep them in filtered sun (the sun in Melbourne is too strong currently to risk putting them in the full sun), and use seasol every week or so. What can I do to get them to ripen? I have a birds net over them by the way but that shouldn't make any difference.

Hi there & sorry I missed this post. Did the fruit end up ripening for you? I give ours a bit of a feed with potassium rich kelp powder to help the fruit develop. Eco Seaweed has about 16% potassium so may be better than some of the other seaweed fertilisers in that respect. Cheers & happy growing Rob.

Hi Rob, Thanks for your reply. They eventually ripened in January after I kept fertilising them with Sudden Impact for Roses which is potassium rich. However as it was so hot with very hot sun much of the time I kept them on a covered terrace most of the time and with the bird net on. Now the two containers are growing away with fresh growth and I am wondering what to with them. I have a lot of choices. I have raised garden beds on a high rockery in the back yard, an open garden veggie patch on a northern fence that is very sunny in summer but shaded from around March till September, and containers of various sizes on the terrace. I could also plant them in the front yard in a sunny garden bed. If you look at the videos of shasta daisies and butterfly on my channel you can see that garden bed. What do you recommend? Should I be tip pruning, repotting, or do I have some time to ponder?

I guess I had a lot of time to ponder - 4 months! :) It's now June and the plants are still in the same pots with flowers and some fruit setting, thanks to a very keen lone bee! as far as I understood the order for planting is this: plant, pine bark, seaweed fertilizer, fertilizer pellets, compost and pine bark again. Correct? Why put the pine bark mulch twice?

Blueberry BURST is very prone to decease in Sydney region. From my experience, the Blueberry SUNSHINEBLUE is far better to grow in pots, and if you do not want to spray chemicals.

You'll need to give it a spray every few weeks with Kocide (copper) during the warm/rainy season, but apart from rust I have had no problems. I have never achieved the large fruit size in the promo material though. My plant adjusted to the chill hour requirements over three seasons, it is now flowering late winter/early spring as opposed to at the beginning of winter. Don't ask me how it figured this out

I have two plants that are now going into their 3rd year, just over a meter high and my fruit are small. I did email plantnet and they said that i didnt fertilise it enough. All my blueberries get the same and my other varieties produce heaps. Very dissappointed with average size fruit around 5mm in diameter. I have 9 different varieties. The Sharpe and Northland produces larger and sweeter fruit for me.

These plants have been in the pouches for almost 4 years now & the pouches are holding up well. The colour fades a bit but that's about it. I have had some pouches for well over 5 years now that are still doing well. Hope that helps some.

I’ve got about 35 of these bags sized from 3gal to 25gal and have been using them for years. No issues at all, they work great and show much less wear than I thought they would.

video after video of people creating soils with no sand silt or clay. Loam is usually ideal: 40% sand 30% silt 20% clay and 10% organic matter like humus. That soil will be garbage after a few years. The loam triangle is different depending on the plant.

I beg to differ. Have grown in post with garden soil that contains clay then added sand for drainage as well as some chook based compost & still had all sorts of issues when I first started to grow on a budget. Those posts & boxes still needed to be emptied & re filled every 12-18 months just like the potting mix ones. Keep in mind that not everyone has access to the raw ingredients to make up their own soil blends due to availability of different ingredients or even contamination of urban soils to name a few reasons. Sweeping statements tend to put more folks off from trying to grow their own as does misinformation. You could film your own clip that explains the chart & also go into what plants suit which mixes. Does the chlorine in tap water affect the blueberries grown in pots? I have read that blueberries are sensitive to chlorine. Do you have problems with birds eating the blueberries ?

I have never had any chlorine issues with ours GS. We do have to net them from the birds & the Queensland fruit flies though. 😕 Cheers.

I’ve read to fertilize blueberries with higher nitrogen. The ecoseaweed you said has higher potassium that you give every 2 weeks or so. I’m also doing into a pot. So do I do higher nitrogen or higher potassium? And when do I fertilize, I read only once a year but since it’s in a pot maybe once a month is ok

The eco seaweed only used regularly through the flowering & fruiting phase as that's when potassium is needed the most. Otherwise, I tend to use a compost or slow release organic pellet to provide the nitrogen & other elements required. 👍 A liquid feed with a fertiliser monthly couldn't hurt if that's the main way you'll be feeding the soil. Hi Rob... am in Northern NSW.. wondering how your blueberries in root pouches have grown.would like to do this too. I like the idea of air-pruning.. but a couple of questions. Can I do it now as my plants have been pollinated with fruit just forming now. Should theyeventually be potted up to larger pots or go into ground?

Hi River. Ours are not doing the best but in saying that, I haven't kept on top of their feeding or pruning requirements. They're still fruiting, but not as well as they have in the past. I wouldn't re pot them until they stop fruiting or you may lose a lot of the crop. I plan to remove ours from the pouches, pop them in fresh soil the. plant them back in them. I would like to take them when we move from here & so far the root pruning/entrapment appears to be keeping them healthy despite my neglect. I hope that helps some.

I'm not sure I would bother using anything but low pH soils in any new blueberry container plants Overrider as out soil only plant is growing just as well as these. I was just following the recommendations that came from the growers to see how it would go. I think the bark helped with drainage but am not convinced that it lowered the pH. Hope the helps some.

They're still holding up well Jim. I think I did put a cut in one with the line trimmer but that's not an issue with the bag, just my poor aim.

I wouldn't worry about adding it in Bronson. I was only following the recommendations of the growers that sold the plants. Our other B Berry is doing fine in plain old soil in it's pot. 👍

They're still growing & I've shown them in other updates over the years. They didn't handle the move 4 hours north too well but are still growing & lost most of their leaves but they're slowly bouncing back.

Hi Rob, Quick question, In the the other video you referenced that using pine bark to lower Ph was a myth. Just wondering, using the pine bark and Azealia as suggested by PlantNet, (mix 50/50) is this still recommended? Cheers and thanks

The plants are still producing well (have noticed they crop better when I feed them, funny that....) so I can't say it's hurt them much. I would still start off with the Azealia mix but think I would skip the bark next time round. Sorry it took so lone to respond.

Probably would be fine on the soil surface as a mulch. I'm not convinced that the pine bark lowered the pH by much myself. I was just following the advice given by the folks that developed this variety. Cheers.

They've just started to flower again & are doing well. I don't think I'd use the pine bark again that the plant growers suggested & I used in this video. Seems like the tray is necessary. It's so hard to keep the right moisture balance for potted blueberries. I've killed them with too little water and too much! I'll try to follow your example. Wish those cloth pots were cheaper. They probably cost 30 cents to make.

Hey Andrea. I think the bush down the back has done so well because it's in the self watering barrel. 👍 It's been my experience that most things made from a recycled material cost a bit more unfortunatley. If it's the Aussie prices you mean, a lot of the increase is due to them costing me more in freight & govenment charges to bring the pouches into Australia than the pouches are to buy from the manufacturer up until now. I'm hoping a new arrangement will bring the price down a bit & will see with a new order that's due in the next few weeks. Cheers & have a top one.

Fabric pots plants are inexpensive online in the US. Not sure your location. They are 5-20x more expensive in the store here

Wood ash has a high pH so not the best to add. I've also found that used coffee grounds don't work as the majority of the acidity is removed when brewing the coffee.

Hi Rob, I'm in New Zealand and because of your video, I bought 2 of these plants. I payed a big shipping cost for them, when they arrive in the label says "medium size berries" Does the label of yours says something different?

Hey Dario. On their site it says they have a large fruit & am sure that the merchandising material I got at the time said their fruit could grow up to the size of an Aussie $1 coin. I can't find the info sheet I got but they do say this, "If all our recommendations on the blueberry plant care page are followed carefully, you can produce fruit up to three times larger than current blueberry varieties available to the home gardener." www.plantnet.com.au/shop/blueberries/blueberry-burst/ It might pay for you to email them & see why the label only says medium-size fruit. early in the video you mention you're using a 56L or 15 gallon pot but then you say it's recommended to use a 50-60cm pot. What size in liters or gallons is 50-60cm?

You always used the blue wicking drums, do you still use these ? Are the pouches better or is it that you get commission, not meaning to sound harsh but I am looking at more containers and want to get the best I can

Hi Mark & sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I still use the wicking barrels but not so much for perennials any more. I think perennials are better off in an air pruning container like the barrel I made up for the papaya or the Root Pouches that I have our coffee tree & new blueberries in. I have found that the air pruning containers do a great job at air pruning the roots of plants helping them to grow a lot healthier. But lost two blueberry plants this year already, and not cheap. Want two bushes, planted acidic soil, bigger pot, only couple size bigger. Do same both bush, but keep dyeing. Sorry for missing your question. With ours, I removed any vertical shoots coming from the main stem that didn't have any branches on them. That limited the vertical growth & I found the plants became a bit more bushy. I'm not sure that's how the pro's would do it but it worked for me. Hope that helps some.

What sort of position have you put them in? I've had to put mine on the patio so it only gets about 4 hours morning sun but come every winter where the patio gets a lot more sun the leaves get burnt off and I have to cut it back hard every year! I'm hoping when we move I can find a better position for it. (I'm in Rockhampton Queensland so I know I'm probably pushing it trying to grow them so far north, but apparently others in the area have had success.)

Rob Bob's Backyard Farm & Aquaponics The variety is 'Sharpblue.' At my last place it was in a better position; morning summer sun and late afternoon winter sun and it didn't lose its leaves then. I think i need to find a tree to put it under. 🤔

Daleys page say that it's "Partly Deciduous" so the change in position may have triggered the leaf drop. Hanging so shade cloth may help you out some. 👍

Since blueberry has shallow roots, why wasn’t it planted in a pot/ container that is more shallow? Is it because pots that size has a standard height?

They're roots will go down quite a ways. They do have a lot of shallow "feeder" roots though.

Done all this and tried adding liquid sulfur to get pH down.. but I can never get the pH low. How can I get the pH down? I have had a blueberry burst plant in a large container, bigger than the ones you have. We used the Gardenia potting mix as recommended and all that.. but even after a year the plant has barely grown and looks half dead.. this year we got maybe 20 buds in total and so far have harvested 2 blueberries and the rest remain small green spheres for weeks. What are we doing wrong?

Hi Liz. I'd move them in doors if I had the room or set them up in a southerly facing position that gets the most of your winter sun. 👍 Some blueberries can handle temps as low as -5 °F to -13°F. Would be worth checking which varieties do though before buying. I'd also enquire how well the roots of the variety you choose can handle the cold as they will be more exposed to the cold than plants in the earth. Hi Rob Bob im a new subscriber, i live in the far south coast NSW. my zone is temperate and i have one blueberry that produces assome fruit every year with minimal maintenance ( light feed twice a year) have you ever taken cuttings from your blueberry's and had any success ?

The only time I tried was when I pruned back some branches & popped a few small sections into the aquaponics. It was the wrong time of year & they died off very quickly. I do know folks that have struck quite a few from cuttings & they used some of the rooting hormone gel to get a good success rate. Sorry it took so log to get back to you. Cheers & happy growing.

Hi Shawn & I'm so sorry I missed your question. I haven't grown grapes myself but from what I've seen 5gal might be a bit small as they may become root bound. I have seen Root pouch say that the 5gal pouch is the smallest pouch they recommend but you also get the benefit of the roots being air pruned which creates a healthier root system for the plant. Hi, I am wanting to get two types of dwarf BB plants, one being the Sun Shine and I am wanting to plant once and let go. I read where a man put his out and it is still doing fine after 10 years in one of the heavy duty smart pots and that is what I want to do. Hi Wayne. It is hard for me to say that is the definite reason but I don't think it's the weather unless it's dropped below 20°. One thing it may be is over watering if the pH & nutrients levels are all fine. Sorry I can't be of more help from this side of the keyboard.
