I know y'all wanted to save all the bulls ... but you've managed to help in a huge way Thank you !! Farming & ranching is a hard enough job on its own ... even harder when mother nature throws a curve ball I know those ranchers are hurting & trying hard ... so to say they appericate your help will never be enough gratitude to give you Thank you so very much to the Layton nation family for everything y'all do !!

We used to lose a few head into Idaho from our USFS permit in Montana every fall. Thankfully, a rancher on the other side of the Divide, would find them with their cattle. We took turns hauling each others cattle back. It was usually the first year heifers, and young bulls.

It's very sad that they lost one of the bulls. I don't think people appreciate how remote and difficult to get to some of these places are and how dangerous it can be in the winter. Just a couple of things that might help anyone going in the back country. 1) always have a plan and have someone on the "ground" know that plan so they know when to call for help. (2) Carry emergency supplies with you so if you have to stay over night you can. Make sure you can start a fire. (3) Don't go alone, always have redundant vehicles etc. (4) Stay dry, or get dry if you get wet. Don't sweat, and wear layers that you can put on and take off. have a waterproof outer layer, a wicking base layer and make at least one layer wool. (4) know how to navigate with an analogue compass and a Map (Bring them). Take a back bearing at the road (This saved me more than once). (5) if you are using GPS make sure it can be used offline (downloaded maps). Bring extra power. (6) If you have one available, take a beacon.

Excellent and life saving advice. I hope robbie, matt and the gang, and fab rats all pay attention to having life saving winter gear whenever you travel in winter. In Alberta the winter survival gear has been a health and safety requirement for more than 40 years.

Nature is very unpredictable, always prepare for the worst imaginable, like getting snowed in, extreme temperature drops, rain storms, mud slides, rivers flooding over, roads washed away or blocked by trees, rocks falling. So look for weather reports, plan ahead. For a night stay over: a tent, stove, supplies, sleeping bags, including water or ability to melt snow. Boots and gear are super important. Ropes and more if you go into the mountains. Mountains are 3x more dangerous, get some training, experience, guide advise. Know the risks before you go, knowledge of wildlife their is also very important. Never go alone!

Yup i lived in Wyoming and you dont mess around out there. You may got hours without a highway turn off or humans. So yeah always be prepared if ur using vehicles id say 1) bring extra belts 2) bring coolant, oil, gear oil, trans oil 3) if you have it bring extra tools jumper cables water etc etc. If you dont know how to fix the things you are using LEARN because its all great being prepared but if tech u use you cant repair it just becomes useless in sirvival situation

When you rebuilt the snowcat you could do something wild like make the back part of the box removable so you could choose between a passenger hauler or flatbed configuration in situations like this. It'd be more work and time of course, but probably good fab content. Also grab yourself like 4 emergency bivys from REI or online. They'd keep you alive overnight if you get stuck or break down. Or you could always just build out the box overland/camper style so you'd be cozy overnight anyway 😂

Kudos to you three for what you are doing. It was also enjoyable to watch. Robby - Heavy D’s team built skis that strap under tires for one of their trailers. You may need to borrow one of D’s snow cats or at least something bigger than whiskers, but you could use the skis and tow in a cattle trailer, load up the steer and pull him out….

I think when you rebuild , "Whiskers" that you need to build a snow sled to pull behind and that way you can transport things you will need in the deep snow with you. Maybe make it like a small boat to be carried upside down on top of Whiskers whenever you are not needing it. Also underneath it would be a dry storage area to carry things that you can't carry inside Whiskers and give more room for people to help in the rescuses. Aluminum would be my choice of material, maybe even find an old aluminum row boat that you could use. Think of the fun you would have pulling Hillbilly back down in it for laughs?

get yourself a truck mounted cattle rack. Weld a plate across the bottom and front (to stop the snow and give em something to stand on). Put some outriggers on it so it can slide and keep it from tipping over. Load one bull at a time and drag em out.
@brians48now

Look at the spot the bull is in. Now think about how they would get your sled level enough that the bull can even get on if you could get it to move in the first place. Then how are you going to get it up to level ground without the bull falling and getting injured? Put all the straps you want on the bull but it won't make the slightest bit of difference.
@mahbriggs

Plus the snowcat doesn't have enough power, and if it did, not enough tracks to handle the extra power! With that much weight to pull, it would just be spinning its tracks in the snow! One would need a far larger machine to make the attempt!

Maybe build a tracked trailer or one on skis for Whiskers. It would take the weight off of Whiskers and help for snow recoveries. I would definitely recemend at least bringing some sleeping bags, food and such in case you have to stay overnight somewhere. When you overhaul the snowcat, maybe add fold up cots to the walls of the bench area and create bunk beds.

You should load some plywood on the roof of Wiskers, maybe a pallet or two and haul it into the bull. Build a small shelter to protect the bull some. Would reduce the possibility of the bull wanting to leave his area for better shelter. The stuff wouldn't weigh as much as the hay did so you could probably make it all the way. Sad to hear about the other bull. That's a miserable death.

I have dealt with my cattle many times through the years well beyond their monetary worth, we have a tendency to become personally attached to them. We have years of drought then massive floods followed by more drought which is the weather cycle here in Queensland and I've had to nurse those big buggers through it and some of them have been better friends than most people can be. The worst part is when you lose them suddenly.

@@ericmitchell998 Maintaining the blood line is not easy in a high attrition environment. My annual excess used to go to properties that needed to increase their blood stock to raise calves in following years. I've always sold cheaply to farmers but sometimes a guy calls himself a "Farmer" but they don't realize I'm not a new chum and get upset when I force top dollar or they can leave, then while they're still standing there I'll sell for very cheap to someone else who I know is trying to rebuild after a bad year. For me it was never about the money, if that were the case I would never had bought my first cow so many years ago and sticking it to a creep who'll buy from some sucker for cheap and flog 'em off at the sales yards the next couple of days. hell they don't even bother to unload and feed them from the truck.
