I grew up (40 years ago) playing on a decade-old Yamaha acoustic that sounded amazing. It was my first guitar and played it religiously throughout my musical journey until someone sat on it in 1999 and broke the neck at the heal. I learned a lot on that guitar beside also having electric Fenders, Gibsons, Ibanezes... and several others. I've played every kind of music, been in many bands, but I'm 51 now and have retired due to health reasons. I went from old rockabilly, to blues, ACDC, Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Slayer, Death, Sepultura, and then I chilled out with that old Yamaha acoustic (at the end of it's life) writing music and playing in a blues band. Three years ago I started playing again and my main guitar is a Yamaha Pacifica, which is the best guitar I've ever had. I started with a Yamaha and I'm likely to finish with one. Love your stuff, Rob!

@@RobChappers It happened at a going-away party for my grandfather who was moving away to a different state. There was some alcohol involved. I didn't notice until the next day when I picked it up and the strings where lack. Years later, I tried (and got close) to reviving it but the action wasn't there. I'd love to find a luthier that I could afford to get it back to where it was. I swear, that acoustic played like the smoothest electric!

I actually got hold of a Yamaha 112 as an intermediate guitarist , and it's the only guitar that through the time I spent with it ( which was a lot for me ) I was only interested in becoming a better guitarist and learning... I have so called nicer guitars now , but to be honest even though they are more expensive they have minor issues that bother me. I'm on the hunt now for a perfect Tele and a perfect hard rock metal guitar....I've noticed that Yamaha now do high price Pacifica's , could be the perfect hard rock , metal , and blues guitar all in one...made in Japan too.

Pareto's law. Takes 20% of the work to get 80% of the ideal result. Thus the remaining 20% of the ideal result takes another 80% work or 4x what you have already put in to get 80% of ideal. Diminishing returns as you say. In this context being pragmatic and stopping at around 20% effort still gives you a good guitar; improvements after that are slow, small and expensive but they are real.

Another fun video. Some guitars are just turds that will never have any potential. That said; it depends on what you want out of a guitar. I definitely love really nice high end builds, but I’m not rich. I learned how to work on guitars many years ago, skills and know how can make a terrible instrument into a far better one. A lot also depends upon how you play (me, not very well, but I know how to get serious tones!). I have guitars that I built/modified that are absolutely stellar players. I have guitars that suck, yet work for me. It’s always a fun journey.

One of my favorite guitars I've owned - if not my outright favorite - is my old Ibanez RX40 that I got for, I think, $60-70 in a pawn shop, in the middle of nowhere. It was one of the least expensive guitars Ibanez made, at the time (and it shows a little bit), and wasn't really meant to blow anyone's mind. But after giving it a light tune up, it immediately became one of my favorites. Over the years, I've swapped out the pickups, and honed in on strings I like for it, and it's a big chunky ripper. The only problem I have is a crack in the body, near the neck, that formed when I last moved. Hopefully, it can be repaired, otherwise I'm going to have to rebody it, which would be a shame.

Years ago, about mid 80's, I went to buy a new electric solid body guitar. I thought that I must buy a Fender Strat. Well I tried 7 from the shelf and wasn't thrilled. They just didn't feel right, didn't play well and didn't sound 'special'. The shop guy bought a new Yamaha which he said people were loving. It was the RG312 set up with a Floyd Rose tremolo. I hadn't heard or read anything bad about Yamaha so tried it. I thought it was brilliant and played so much better than all the Fender Strat's I'd tried. All the guitars I tried were about $1K (AUD), so the Fenders were all mid range. Anyway the motto is... It doesn't matter what brand it is, but the actual playability, sound and feel of an individual instrument that counts.

I've owned a few guitars, and played many. One thing I have learned is, regardless of brand or price tag, guitars have personalities. Some guitars have awesome personalities, some have atrocious personalities. You won't know which, until you pick it up, and play on it. My oldest, and most beloved, guitar is a 1989 Charvel 650XL, that I ordered from Charvel/Jackson, brand new, in '89. It's a great guitar, and I would never part with it. However, she is very unforgiving, when it comes to playing. If I am not on top of my game, she will not cover for me, and I will sound like absolute shite! On the other hamfist, if I am playing well, she sings like beautiful demons (I play Hardcore, and sludgy Metal, so no angels singing, here, lol) and I actually feel myself bonding with her, and the energy of the universe, so we are as one unit, expressing the bombastic music of galactic collisions, super novae, and planetary birth and death! Plus, I put a very high output pickup in the bridge position, so it's very aggressive. I must say, Rob, I'm kind of surprised you don't own a ridiculously expensive vintage Les Paul, or something, that you only take to church on Sundays, and no one is allowed to touch it. Most of the longtime guitarists I have known seem to have a thing like that.

I couldn't agree more. For electric guitars anyway. For acoustics, that's an entirely different conversation. I suggest going to the guitar shop and spending some time playing several guitars. Pick the one that talks to you and that you can't leave without buying. Then figure out how to pay for it. One of my favorite Teles was a pink paisley Cort. I picked it up for about $250USD back in 1986. Now I own a few really nice Fender Custom Shop Strats and Teles. They do sound better but I'm not sure that they give me better feedback than that old Cort. Maybe it's just that I am 100% comfortable and familiar with the Cort and I'm always afraid of putting a ding in the Custom Shop axes? IDK. I still drag that Cort out of the case a few times every year...just to say "Hello. How are you getting along?". I think currently, my favorite is a PRS SE Custom 22 Semi-Hollow in Black Gold. But I don't own a Chapman yet. Maybe one of those would bump the PRS???????????????

I'm pretty sure you have a very expensive PRS that in a previous video somewhere on KZfaq you said you would be keeping and handing down to 1 of your Children 🤔

The sparkle on the Chapman rules. The Yamaha is no slouch and could be EQ-ed to sound 'better' but that Chapman is just Aces sound-wise.

If I've owned one guitar I've owned a hundred, and the only two that were ever purchased brand new were a Yamaha RGZ-321 and a Solar Vinter.

I love how your cheapest and most expensive are essentially the same design. Incidentally, is that the same guitar the guy from Spain sent you?

My cheapest is a Korean made Samick SV60L/BK and my most expensive is the Epiphone MKH Les Paul Custom Origins. I paid $100 for the Samick. The EMGs I put in cost more than the entire guitar. 😂

"one piece neck" means the fret board is part of the neck. That is obviously a maple neck with a rosewood fret board. As a guitar builder, you should know this.

Many builders call it a one piece neck if it's not scarfed or multi laminate.

The term can either refer to a complete neck and board or a non laminated neck and attached board. I’m using the term “One piece neck” to refer to a non laminated neck… this neck is made from one piece of wood. 1) Someone who manufactures guitars is called a “luthier” 2) The area of a guitar where the frets go is called a a “Fretboard” 😉
