Thanks for sharing. Wolfman is a legend in N. MS and true bluesman. Love the video -- As I'm sure you've found out, his style is very, very hard to nail down without a pickup. Alot of his notes will come from hammering on and off with just the left hand. any live Hill Stomp videos are great examples. Thanks for sharing!

Hello, First thanks for all your beautiful lessons. I think Belfour plays it in open G at least that's the way I play it and it is quite easy in this tuning. There are videos where you can see him play this song and from the way his fingers move that can only be in open G.

Have you checked out Junior Kimbrough & R.L. Burnside ? Great & more well known exponent's of "Hill Country blues" most seem to use either open G, F or D R.L. Burnside - Poor Black Mattie

I've never really gotten into his style - I just did this lesson for a subscriber who was trying to figure it out. I have no idea how close I am to what he did/does. Thanks though. I'm more into the old school stuff - 1920s and 1930s.

GREAT LESSON!... I too am getting into Wolfman's playing style. Yeah I'm sure he uses heavy strings tuned real slack. I think this helps to articulate all the hammer ons and pull offs more easily. As far as I can work out all his stuff is either in Standard or "Open G" but like I say REAL SLACK. I use the same strings as you but I substitute a 22p for the G string, this helps with that bend you were talking about and gives me a twang there. I've never tried "My Baby's gone" but I intend to thrash it out with your great video. I did start to mess around with "Poor Boy" another of his slack standard tuning numbers but I put my own spin on it while trying to inject a bit of R.L. Burnside Poor Boy (a work in progress) ~ R.L. Burnside meets Robert Belfour - I really must revisit it to finish it off (this recording was just a notebook idea that I've not looked at since, I might have forgotten it if I hadn't taped it). If you're only just dicovering this style you gotta seek out all R.L. Burnside's solo material, the first recordings album is a great place to start. Here's a track from it R.L. Burnside - Poor Black Mattie. The second track on that Belfour album you showed is his take in "Poor Black Mattie" and another album which is well worth tracking down is a compilation called "The Spirit Lives on"... It's Belfour's first recordings (there's a great version of "Black Mattie" on there). Belfour's "Black Mattie" is basically the same frame and licks as his instrumental "Hill Stomp" Robert Belfour - Hill Stomp ("Open G" tuned way down somewhere close to "E" in this performance) and this is a number I do play. I worked out a crib sheet to help me get the sequencing of all the licks when I was first putting it all together... It worked pretty well for me so I uploaded it on the off chance others might find it useful too LESSON - How to play "Hill Stomp" by Robert Belfour ~ Complete sequence breakdown (phrase by phrase)

Excellent lesson. You mentioned John Lee Hooker. There are so few lessons on his early acoustic work, e.g. Hobo Blues. Hope that you or one of the other great blues teachers try him one day. In any case, thanks a million for your work.

+Michael Hourican I am actually working on doing a lesson on Hooker's playing before too long - probably in the summer or late spring. I've been studying his playing in OPen G/A - great stuff. Thanks!

You need to check out My Baby's Gone by Stick McGhee. It's on a great album "Classic Appalachian Blues" by the Smithsonian. The song is completely different. Like Picasso and Monet, both are so different you really can't compare them to each other, but both are delicious! This album Classic Appalachian Blues may change my life!

I disagree. I think the "talking" helps one to understand what they are playing better - instead of just imitating or copying it. I try to only explain/mention things that will help the player to learn the music and/or appreciate it more. I am a high school history teacher - so, it's hard for me not to. I don't play the whole song first because; (1) I expect people to have listened to the original or to listen to the original before coming to my lesson - that saves time. (2) I always play the part first - before teaching it (or, try to). My time is very limited.. These videos are low-budget productions. If you like them, great. If you don't, that's ok too. IMO, there's no "right" way to do this stuff. I'm glad to hear others are into the same music. djmoore
