I just posted a comment about this exact section. It really is beautiful. Amazing finger work. If you want to hear a gorgeous piece which sounds strikingly similar to this (I'm not sure if Visée borrowed from Matteis or vice versa), YT search: Nicola Matteis Hélène Schmitt Diverse Bizarrie (the title is actually much longer but that should pull up the video) Ms. Schmitt happens to be my favorite violinist. And Matteis is a criminally under-known composer. Thank me later ;)

It is a blessing that we can hear the music of composers unknown to us through this medium. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than going to amazon or that apple store and buying an album only to decide that you don't like it. I've also been able to rediscover performers and performances that I loved on vinyl which are no longer available through CDs, e.g., Igor Kipnis playing Poglietti or Scott Ross playing Bach or performances on unusual instruments such as those used in renaissance, baroque and other classical music genres. I had the enormous privilege and pleasure of visiting the musical instrument museum while visiting a friend in Leipzig, Germany (I got to mess about on a clavichord they have that's open to the public to play!). This is wonderful! Thank you for posting!

Actually, the subject of the painting is no mere anonymous "lutenist", but the Czech noble, Count Johann Adam von Questenberg , who served the Hapsburg court in Austria. He was very interested in maintaining and projecting his profile of refined education and culture, such as his love of music and architecture. In the background of this portrait is an image of his castle, Jaroměřice, which was apparently still being constructed at the time this portrait was painted. Kupecký (a Czech) was a very famous portrait painter during this time and painted many portraits of nobles, rich merchants, clergy, and other VIPs. More on the painting and the artist: www.arte-fakt.cz/dokumenty/XII.%20konference/s.6-19_L.Ruhe.pdf Oh, Robert de Visée was a contemporary of Kupecký and von Questenberg.

We laresy knew the delicate expression of the French baroque harpsichord through Couperin. We are rediscoveing the same expression in the viola di gama through Marais, Sainte Colombe, Forqueray (and again Couperin). here we ahe excellent exmaples on the Theorbe, more intense than the lute. This intimate sensitivity was present in all the French baroque music, usually considered as more solemn to claim the Glory of the King Louis XIV.
