I was there for this speech. He and Ethel walked right by us and I did shake his hand, though he had a distant stare as he passed. Afterwards, while driving home, we heard the news that Martin Luther King had been assassinated. I saw his speech in Indianapolis on the news that evening. Incredible day for an Indiana teenager.

I was downstate in New Albany, as a 9-year-old. I would shake his hand as he passed in an open car on May 6, the day before the Indiana primary.

I knew two people, friends of my mother, who were students at Ball State then. They were very progressive, and I'm sure enthusiastic about this speech. And of course a guy named David Letterman was at the campus. I'm not sure he was the kind to be in this audience.

I was 12 when this great man was murdered, and have never forgotten the horror. As a student of history, RFK still inspires me every time I hear him talk, be a speech or Q&A. You still remind America of what was lost on June 6, 1968 and I hope Bob Jr. is AMERICAS NEXT PRESIDENT and continues the work you started, along with your brother JFK. REST IN PEACE RFK AND KNOW YOUR SON HAS TAKEN YOUR PATH.

As brilliant a leader and as inspiring a leader as John F. Kennedy was, I honestly think his brother, Robert F. Kennedy, was more inspiring. I also think he would have been an even better President. However, considering how divisive the United States was in 1968, it was probably expected that Kennedy would be killed. Looking back, I am just surprised it was not by someone more like James Earl Ray.

David Williams, I agree with your point about the difference between Jack and Robert Kennedy. Robert felt his convictions on a deeper level. He conveyed those convictions directly to the American people, and in so doing forged a deeply personal connection with them. In early 1966 I met him among a small group in conversation at a banquet in New York. Those extraordinary moments left an indelible mark on my life.

What Robert Kennedy spoke about through government programs to help citizen to become productive member helped me. Though it was Robert Sargent Shriver Jr. who started Job Corps, a program I benefited from many years ago that gave me the opportunity to turn my life around. Don't ask any government programs to success in helping transform people's lives 100% but ask transform those who can be transformed. One of two jobs government has is make productive members of society and the other job is protect those members. Since I graduated from Job Corps, I got the skills needed to hang on to jobs and keep learning. Thanks to the sprits of people like Robert Sargent Shriver Jr or Robert Kennedy.

@@Dashriprock4 as an 80ies kid I'm only slowly coming to grasp with the quite possible alternative trajectories the US and the world could have taken since the 70ies. Wallace was an eye opener. And JFK‘s 1963 speeches. The current world trajectory towards multipolarity gives me some hope in the current time of chaos. It will bring upheaval but eventually, I hope, lay a new foundation for peace, justice, prosperity, stability that the US dreamt of ushering in after WWII but has objectively miserably failed in. It seems inevitable now that the "Pax Americana" that JFK was not in favor of is finally coming to an end now. 60+ years later.

@@banzobeans I have concerns about multipolarity, but it could be, as a Boomer, I fear the unknown. Not encouraged by the idea of Chinese leadership. I think you've touched on something interesting about possible trajectories for the United States. Think if Robert Kennedy would have been elected in 68 or 72. Probably no Reagan. No supply-side. They will vote GOP. People like you will Help Them. You haven't listened and heard one of this speech. @@Longshotsblues you're brain has been so twisted you have no idea what you're talking about, RFK Jr has MANY of the same values his father had, the democratic party of today is almost entirely corrupt and they've done everything they can to suppress RFK Jr. all you have to do is listen to just one or two of RFK Jr's speeches and if that doesnt change your mind then you are mentally lost. both father and son run an on uniting america and the rest of the world, to be shinning cities on a hill as JFK said. RFK would never vote for somebody as demented as joe biden or any other democrat that has ran in the last 40 years (or republican for that matter post reagan) all of the presidents of the last 4 decades have succeeded in running this country straight into the ground and very soon there will be a reckoning in this country.
