@@prayeddanny what a wonderful story! Having been a fairly young keen adherent of the progressive music scene (historical note, this was prior to the use of the term progressive to pigeonhole the very specific genre it was later to acquire, it simply meant exactly what the word implied, any music that progressed rock/ pop beyond the commercial mainstream) this evokes memories of an era that has never been since replicated imho as a hotbed of creativity and and Hendrix was already in the position of rock god, but still viewed as progressive according to the above definition for fairly obvious reasons, but he was echoing a view held by many of us that Crimson really was the most original (and therefore best?) band of the era. But it also illustrates both Jimi's incredible modesty (despite his wild man public persona) and his incredible appreciation of other artists and of innovation extending beyond his own particular brand of music. It makes me so grateful that I had the good fortune to be present during this transformational period in rock history. The seated guitarist element also strikes a chord (forgive the unintentional pun) with others - notably Steve Hackett in Genesis - following suit, but also my own preferred approach to guitar performance. The impact of both rock legends is immeasurable and it's great that this link exists between these two giants.

I had read an article about the meeting with Hendrix prior to July 10, 1979, when Robert brought his Frippertronics tour to the Peaches Records and Tapes store in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I and a few friends went to hear this Master musician and witness his solo show; we were blown away. After the show, a line formed that snaked up to Fripp, where he was graciously receiving those of us who attended the show (the place had been packed). When I got to him, I asked if he would sign my 'Exposure' album that had just been released, and he did (the album is framed and hanging above and to the left of where I am typing this). He reached out his right hand to thank me for purchasing his new release, and, instead, I thrust out my left hand, saying to him: "Shake my left hand; it's closer to my heart". Upon hearing my re-telling of the words that Jimi had spoken to him, Robert smiled widely, changed hands, and shook my left hand with his. I shall never forget this magical moment meeting such a person who has had such a significant influence on my musical journey. Thank you, Robert.

Cool! My JH story involved traveling with a friend, crossing the border from my home in Vancouver to venture down the I5 to a little suburb of Seattle called Kent I recall. Once there, we spotted a large black man at a gas station and thought he might help us, he did! 15 minutes later, we were at JH's original grave, a modest dark rectangle of marble situated next to one of his parents. Next to them, was a woman named Betty Hagey. That was 1992, we videotaped some of our time there at the graveyard and both of us made crayon copies of his gravestone on tracing paper. I later had it framed and it still sits on my wall to this day.

Given that people love to doubt this story, I appreciate that he upped it to "Jimi said we were the best band in the world", hahaha. Nobody can brag with such polite humility as Mr. Fripp. I have heard live recordings from that era, I believe on the right night, with proper mood for audience and band, Jimi was telling the truth! That was the straight stuff, no *aspic* involved!

kinda obnoxious, yes. I Love fripp but to exploit a situation like that and to top it with that "eye witness" without any word of critical relativation or joke just brings the fokus to him, his band and his brilliance. But the way he presents it it sounds harmless and it makes you not reflect on it at first..

Never been so disappointed to be living in Vancouver as now. No KC shows, Hackett skipped us, and now these guys. Dammit! Fripp shook Hendrix's hand!? Thought he doesn't let anyone touch him? He definitely avoided shaking my hand on our one meeting many years back. But I digress. Its very enjoyable to hear RF relax from his previous public persona as the fearsome intellectual and engage in light hearted humor. Age often does this to people, the need to maintain a certain social presence is not as important as we age. Cheers to both lads!

I think, if I had another opportunity to ask Robert Fripp a question, only this time I weren’t so worried about asking the right question or the wrong question or the best question or the worst question or the question which’d elicit the most life-changing answer, and I also weren’t so worried that this might be my one and only chance to ask him a question ever, I might ask him *_“What new bands or solo artists, in the rock or pop idiom, formed since 2015, excite you most?”_* and I don’t know whether that’s a burning question or a report or an observation, I don’t know where it fits in the taxonomy … but the prospect of receiving an answer _stirs_ me, which is not a sensation any of my actual questions ever produced, so that’s interesting. Gah. So many weird feelings. I think I’m having a year’s-long delayed reaction to 2021’s Long Island fête des guitares.

''Music doesn't lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.'' ~Jimi Bible had a lotta world changing horns @ Jericho & proclaims a future 7 piece world change set awaiting to blow within the wings of the story. Looking deep into that story's Hero, it's most feasible that the righteous blood He'd shed for all; would entitle Him to be called KC.

First time I heard king..my girlfriend, who was older than I - I was 16 - put on Schizoid man, in the court, you know - I said what's this - she said you never heard of King crimson? No. I like it, I said - as I heard an obvious experimental transcendent psych band in a weird gloom cloud of what sounded to my mind like king Arthur's Merlin Band in regalia...she said it's a stoner thing - I thought, more like an acid thing (a psychidelic band that people call prog I just see it as innovative). I "borrowed" it from her and played it everywhere I went - everyone thought it was the cats pj's. She took it back. A few years later I had forgotten about them, then in the window of the local music store (very small town) I saw a display of newly reissued king Crimson albums on Cd. A pocket of money and I was walking home from the greyhound station just getting back from Chicago, I thought I would choose one and go have a coffee at the espresso bar. Which one....then I saw the red weaving cover...it said "Discipline". I hoped they were as good in later years as the first album...got to the coffee house sat down and the owner said I see you have some music you just bought, just put it in the stereo and crank it up there's nobody here, enjoy your album. I put it in - and the first lines in Discipline, if you know them are like here we go! The rest is history, then I discovered fripps solo stuff. I like the first 4 Crimson albums most, but the later stuff is so completely psychidelic.
@roypemberton1983
@roypemberton1983 Жыл бұрын
So, I guess we encounter Crimson at a similar age but I delved deeply into them immediately but it's worthy of comment that, at that point in time, the term progressive had not acquired the limited meaning it was later to acquire, it meant no more than less than what you say - innovative.
