DERRICK HODGE .. THE UNSUNG HERO
@rawdonwaller8 жыл бұрын
People talk about surgeons being brilliant. Engineers being brilliant. Physicists and architects and activists. The poor Jazz artist, regardless of instrument(s), gets relatively little recognition. All members of this trio deserve and probably 'exceed' the label of 'brilliant'.

I don’t even play drums and I agree so much. I’ve never heard a drummer who can dominate the feel of a track so well, using such tasteful chops & grace notes never playing something expected or monotone. Hearing the trio dive in to mos def grooves is legitimately the peak of musical emotion right now.

I don't think Rob G gets enough credit on the keys...this man has mad skills. It's hard to out-shine Chris Dave in the trio but damn those melodies are RAW.
@Jm203757 жыл бұрын
I agree he's a legend and the credit he gets should be even more. But frankly I see it a little differently. How many jazz cats really have ANY shine through the rest of the music being made? Very few. Robert Glasper is, thankfully, a name I can drop when I'm out and strike up a convo about music and people often know who I'm talking about. As it should be! Glass half full homie.
@stlpariah7 жыл бұрын
Not comparing his skills to the rest of the music made, just his skills on the keys. I could care less about the rest of the music honestly, but I appreciate your comment.

how many jazz cats have broke through like robert glasper is the question. he's what jazz needed to fuse the newer generation like myself and the older generations together. just my two cents.
@generalbenson15977 жыл бұрын
Agree. Jazz was in a very stale place all through the 90's. And hwile I don't think we can hang it all on Glasper, he was a huge part of kicking off a whole new energy and direction for the last decade of jazz.

Seriously, I don't get why you put Live at Vanguard while it is not..what the point ? 'think "Vanguard" will give you more hit in your sweety youtube account ... Truth dude, this is simple, no ? SO : This live happened on Sept 12 2010, 6pm à Cité de la Musique, Paris. I was there so can tell you this was amazing. It is also all around youtube and one of the top 10 links on Glasper. So you can't really miss it Robert Glasper Trio Experiment with Bilal au Festival Jazz à la Villette. Derrick Hodge on contrebasse and Chris Dave on drums Glasper played grand piano and Rhodes stage piano, oh yeah...! As u can imagine, Chris Dave blew every parisians up and down and cornerly, also spiralmenté Bilal was amazing. Among the 4 songs he performed, there was Billie Holiday "Body & Soul". I am still on the top of the snowy mountain he created for us during the song. He also sharply sang "All Matters" (from Glasper last double LP). I did not remember his voice was so diverse and perfect. A true artist Complete Track list 1. G & B ( from LP In My Element) 2. I have a Dream (Herbie Hancock) 3. Down Time (with bits of Dilla "Fall in Love") 4. Little B's Poem feat. Bilal 5. Body&Soul feat. Bilal 6. Yes I'm Country(and that's o.k.) 7. 59 south (with 3 notes of John Coltrane"My Favorite Thing") 8.Butterfly (starting at 74.18mn...I screamed at 74.12mn ! AH ) + jam + J Dillalude (rendition of Satin Doll) 9. All Matter feat. Bilal 10 [Encore]. Reminisce feat Bilal As for question on Little B´s Poem Lyrics By - Doug Carn (1971 LP "Infant Eyes) Written-By - Bobby Hutcherson (1965 LP" Components") There is a another well-know version by Dee Dee Bridgewater on his 1974 LP Afro Blue -----Little B's Poem------ Horns of love, you make my heart sing the joys, rejoys that all the bells ring Little B, you are my heart’s delight You make my life sunny and bright Little B, you are all my heart sing for Before you came and brought us such joy How we hoped and prayed that you’d be a boy But little girl you are my heart’s delight You make my life sunny and bright Little B, you are all my heart sing for Little girl you realize you’re the one I idolize You’re such a pretty baby We’re so very glad you came our way Horns of love, you make my heart sing the joys, rejoys that all the bells ring Little B, you are my heart’s delight You make my life sunny and bright Little B, you are all my heart sing for

People.... This is music... in the raw.. and at it's very best..... for those who state Bilal was not up to par... What exactly is "up to par" and what makes you an authority on the matter... ??.... Interpretations by observers of what is good or not good are subjective...and relative to that individuals point of reference which appears to be very limited.. ... For those of us who are real Music lovers... ..Robert Glasper, Bilal, Derrick Hodge and Chris Dave are the modern day Picasso's of Jazz...Just because they don't paint by the numbers... and within the lines doesn't make it any less great...Haters expand your mind..... Aight.??!!... That's all. :)

The beauty and magic of Chris’s drumming is he doesn’t need a big set as every note he plays is about precision and feel of the groove, his minimal kit is all he needs in fact just give him a snare, bass drum and a hi hat and he will show you the power of GROOVE!!!
