I had the honor of meeting Robert Plant when I was a towncar driver in Phoenix Az. I did not know who Robert Plant was but he treated me with respect and let me strap on Jimmy Pages white Stratocaster that was set up with as many insturments as they could fit in their den where I am sure they jammed on many songs. Robert Plant is a sincere and respectable person that in conversation was a down to earth good person. I spent a total of about 1 hour and a half just shooting the breeze, he sensed that I did not reconize who he was and we discussed some good topics and I respect his privacy so I just keep our conversation in good memory, I wished I would have kept his credit card slip but he left me a good tip.

This song was a hit for Jesse Colin Young. With his band the youngbloods in the late 60s. It has been covered by a few others as well as Plant.

Nevermind that this man is one of the greatest vocalists and artists of our time, he caught atmosphere of this song really good. When you hear Youngbloods version (which is masterpiece on it's own), you get totally different picture. This one, from singing, to lead guitar just breaks me. You really get the lyrics when you listen to this one from Robert's Dreamland. What an ode to musical masters by a musical master.

Elephant mountain is still a favorite of mine. Masterful writer and singer still - I wish that album had been better recorded in the first place though. I've had the record album, tape and gold CD remastered (long ago) is the one I still have now. You're right- Plant did this justice but it is quite different and at 4 in the morning... I still enjoy spending those wee hours with Jesse Colin Young too.

The Youngbloods' song is very spiritual and moving. Plant sings to that side where, in our nescient darkness, we yearn for the light. In 1969 I was meditating in an abandoned copper mine in the California foothills, living in solitude searching for the light. This song is my generation's anthem.

I personally like this version a LOT better. Never been a big fan of hard core heavy metal, and Robert Plant is capable of a great many types of music. I believe he had some classical training before he got into the rock scene but not sure on this. Jesse Colin Young wrote the song and it had a very different feel with his version. Robert Plant has captured the meaning of the song and combined both rock and acoustic in the same song. Brilliant.
