Heroin is illegal while tobacco is legal, even though they are both addictive and tobacco is objectively more deadly; meanwhile psychedelics are highly illegal even though they are neither deadly nor addictive. These double standards call the whole system into question. Logically it would seem that we should either make ALL drugs legal, as your argument would suggest, and then choose to either restrict potential advertising or leave it unrestricted, or we apply a consistent restriction to drugs that are deadly and/or addictive and make drugs that are neither fully legal.

People have ideological blind spots, and this interview is a good example of that. Proctor doesn't engage with a central question, which is WHO gets to decide what qualifies as "misinformation", and when trying to crack down on misinformation becomes flagrant censorship. Additionally he criticizes eugenicists, and yet minutes later says "there are too many people on the planet", which is effectively saying there are too many of *the wrong kinds of people* on the planet. Whatever the validity of his claim, he is yet another "intellectual" whose goals may be noble, but doesn't realize what the implications and consequences of those goals might be. He also has a tendency to omit individual choice-making from the equation--"obesity is caused by upholding the sugar industry" and "offering soda in schools". It reveals a deeper inclination to deny the agency of individuals...which is what authoritarians do. Not saying Proctor is one himself, but just pointing out my qualms with his worldview.

I think it is easy to misunderstand Roberts approach to conversations... He is a Science Historian, he is answering the ques. in a scientific mind... meaning, to explain something you need to explain the positive and the negative, good and bad, back and front of a subject to get us/you to understand... Explaining topics this way will of course sound hypocritical and contradictory ... Just the Title of the talk made me want to burn him on the stake also !, then I listened and realized , these are sensitive subjects, but to understand why they were "the in thing" at one time, we need to hear the good and the bad to understand correctly.🧐

His big concern is smoking. He looks as old as me, 68. The world of smoking has changed enormously in the U.S., for the better. I wonder what is his concern about smoking--health or second hand smoke. I have noticed (some) people that quit smoking have then increased drinking and/or (prescription) drug intake. If he wants 100% no smoking in order to be happy, he needs to find out how we can safely self medicate ourselves. Sure we don't have to deal with second hand smoke now, but just the same, people are still doing harm to their health, and more. I think he totally downplayed alcohol which kills the users, as well as killing others in car accidents, domestic violence, child abuse . . . Trying to hear him out gave me a stomachache. I guess we all have an axe to grind and smoking is his. There are so many things killing us now, his concern seems a bit anachronistic; but I guess he won't be happy till 100% is reached. I didn’t watch the episode yet but I’ve always thought there’s too many people on Earth. Not resource wise like most would think. I mean when when there’s too many people in society things get weird. I think we should have less children but raise them better. I think society would be more smooth that way, it’s hard to articulate it but there’s many reasons why I think this. I believe it’s a quality over quantity situation.
