I was just preparing Whisper the stoat kit I am hand rearing for a life in the wild and had got so far as adding branches to her enclosure for her to learn to climb up when I was contacted by some people in Norfolk who had a kit the same age as Whisper that needed rehabilitating.
You can watch more on the stoat kits' rehabilitation journey in this series: • Weasels & Stoats | Res... and find more rescue films here: • Rescued & Returned to ...

ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
New rescue stoat
This was excellent news. In the wild stoats grow up in litters of seven or eight kits. They learn how to fight and hunt through play and so I knew that it would do both stoat kits the world of good to have one another for company.
So, after a lot of driving, I got the new stoat kit here. The people in Norfolk who rescued the kit had named it Stuart, but it turned out to be a female. Still both kits are exactly the same age and size and so she is an ideal friend for Whisper.
Whisper & Stuart meet
It's important to remember that when both kits were rescued their eyes were still shut and so neither had seen another stoat before. I carried Stuart(a) over to Whisper's enclosure in a hat that the people who rescued her had given her to sleep in so that she felt safe and at home.
At first, both were wary and Whisper, who you will remember I named because she was so quiet, was particularly vocal, squeaking in alarm at what she at first took to be an intruder. But within in half an hour the two stoat kits had settled down to play.
Stoat friends
It's been wonderful to watch them play hide and seek and chase each other through toilet rolls and into one another's safety hats and socks. With each other for company and to learn from, they both stand a much better chance in the wild. This is so much better than me trying to play with Whisper, throwing teddy bears and toilet rolls for her to chase!
You can follow the story of Whisper and her rehabilitation into the wild on my blog here: www.robertefuller.com/diary/r...

There is currently one of these cute little predators living in my fishing gear shed. They don't cause any damage at all and they hunt and eat mice, rats, squirrels and other rodents that chew on everything and cause damage. An awesome little creature to have around your house, I feed it and treat it well so it sticks around, it's been keeping my yard free of pests for a few years now and has become really tamed and nosey. They're extremely fast and especially cute in winter months with their thick white coat, but don't let their tiny size and cuteness fool you, they turn pretty vicious when backed into a corner. If you treat weasels right and leave it be, you'll have a nice little friend that will keep your yard free of unwanted rodents for years to come, free pest control.

They are truly Natures Psychopaths. Their high metabolic rate means they must keep moving (to find food) constantly and their ability to kill prey much larger than themselves is amazing. I am a volunteer trapper in New Zealand, where mustelids are introduced pests that wreak havoc with the native bird population (which evolved without mammalian predators). Their skulls are beautiful, like tiny little tiger-predator skulls.

That is SO awesome! Just imagine being both of them. Your whole life being by yourself in a strange place all by yourself. And then one day you find out that you're not alone in your little world! That there ARE others like you. Pure heartwarming! You could easily tell how happy they both were when they realized they had eachother.
