In this film I share my journey from a boyhood obsessed with nature to globally recognised wildlife documentary maker and artist.
You can watch me create more wildlife art here: • My Wildlife Art 🎨🖼️ | ... and learn more about my gallery here: www.robertefuller.com/visit-us/
Or, of course, you may like to purchase my artwork which you can find on my website: www.robertefuller.com. Many of my paintings are portraits of the wonderful characters you watch here!
ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
As a boy I spent most of my time observing wildlife and documenting it in paintings and drawings and by my mid-twenties my dream of owning my own gallery was a reality.
The story behind the paintings
I prefer a detailed, realistic style and to achieve this I spent most of my time watching, photographing and filming the animals around me. From mallard ducks to kingfishers and puffins at the coast, my focus at first was local.
My garden
To make this possible I turned my home into a wildlife haven, planting wildflower meadows and putting up nest boxes to attract owls and kestrels. I even built a badger sett to watch these animals underground.
Kingfishers
One of my biggest projects was to watch kingfishers inside their nests. I made an artificial nesting bank rigged with hidden camera and over the course of six years I filmed every stage of the breeding process, from egg laying to the chicks' first flights.
Following the lives of individual animals
It wasn't long before I had cameras in all the nest boxes in my garden and soon I was following the daily lives of tawny owls, barn owls and kestrels - getting to know their individual characters.
Wildlife characters
From a tawny owl named Luna, who adopted two chicks when her own eggs failed, to a male kestrel who surprised wildlife experts everywhere by raising his chicks alone, the stories kept on coming.
Sharing the stories
I began sharing these stories on social media in 2010 and shortly afterwards caught the eye of the BBC who invited me to co-present short films for The One Show.
TV work
A few years later, I my observations of stoats and weasels were filmed for a worldwide program co-produced by PBS in America, and the BBC Natural World.
Social media
By February of 2020, we nearly had 100,000 people following our social media, but after the UK went into lockdown in March this soared. I began livestreaming the wildlife cameras and the audience grew so fast we had to employ a group of moderators to monitor the community.
Online community
People from around the world got really involved, even voting to name the owls and kestrels and the emails of appreciation began pouring in.
Media storm
When Niels, a bartender from the Netherlands who shared the livestreams on the big screen behind his bar instead of sports, the news went global.
Collaborations
The interest led to collaborations with companies I admired like Sony, DJI and Swarovski Optik. I also began a new partnership with a UK based tour operator, Wildfoot Travel.
Travel
With the support of Wildfoot Travel I began to watch wildlife further afield. Filming sloths in Panama, polar bears in Svalbard in the Arctic and lions in Zimbabwe.

I only discovered your work just before lockdown, and have been obsessed since! Visiting your gallery in the snow last February was one of the most incredible experiences, especially after having been able to see some familiar faces from the fotherdale livestream! I’ve learnt so much from your channel about wildlife all over the world, but the local stories I find especially inspiring. I’m always out and about with my camera when I get the chance, exploring wildlife influenced by your videos. I love art too so that makes your gallery even more impressive. I honestly don’t know how you’ve managed to narrow down everything you do into this 25 minute video but watching your short films is always a great way to end the day. When I came across one of your videos for the first time, I binge watched for over a week to catch up! Thanks so much Robert and the team for sharing all this beautiful content!!

Interesting Journey. Wishing nothing but the best for the team and really liking the close-up qualities of the videos + secret nest cams which give insights into the reproductive journeys & the ultimate evolution to their respective adulthoods. I do like particular videos whereby the birds give light-hearted and animated reactions to the situation like when Luna gave a bewildered reaction upon seeing Bomber exiting the nest after spending some time with the adopted chicks or Mr Kes' reaction & action after his mate never came back. Great job, REF & the team!

I have been following your channel for a few years and enjoyed learning how your career started. You are certainly a very talented and caring man. I don't think I can pick a favorite subject - you make each animal and bird very exciting to watch. I hope someday to see you featured on a television channel here in the U.S.

Here is a fantastic example of following one’s joy in life and trusting that if you follow the opportunities that lead only to your joy in life, you can: Love your life Bring meaningful change. Protect and serve. Bring so much joy to others. Save lives, quite literally! Show others that it can be done. Become an ambassador. And most of all live love and share. Mr Fuller you are an inspiration to many and to me and I want to thank you from the deepest part of my spirit for following your joy. Long May You Live it ! Thank you. Old Owl 🦉 Alaya Norfolk. Your wildlife videos are the best I have ever seen in my 70 years of life. It will never cease to totally amaze me how such tiny, fragile looking totally bare creatures such as kingfishers, kestrels, owls, etc. have the strength to peck their way out of their shells and not only survive but thrive and grow to fledglings in such a short period. Thank you so much for sharing this truly remarkable process with the world. I love the stoats, such beautiful, mischievous little animals. But I do have to say also that your filming of the pond teeming with all sorts of wildlife and the 3 lion cubs in their natural habitat with the pride was outstanding! Once again thank you, and may God bless you and keep you safe on your travels. ❤️🙏

Your stuff is absolutely astronomical, the best I've seen on KZfaq for wildlife stories in the UK. I grew up absolutely in LOVE with raptors and birds in general, a love I maintain to this day. Seeing a hunting Barn Owl quartering a field at Martinmere was a dream come true, and six Marsh Harriers and a Bittern there was a plus I'd never imagined. Your stories about your local birds, the raptors in particular, never portray any one species as the villain or 100% innocent either, and that's not an easy tale to weave. Simply put, they're a delight to watch. May you have a wonderful Christmas.

❤❤Robert: I loved this video. It is awesome. I never knew you were a wildlife artist. I've done art since I was a kid, too, but could not do wildlife. I've hiked in the woods daily since I was 11. We lived across the street from a mountain & I always hiked straight up, always watching wildlife. Still get my enjoyment in nature watching deer, hawks, owls, etc. Love your art. You've led quite an interesting & productive life, especially traveling to see various animal species. Great photography!! I really enjoy seeing the birds in their nests. I watched 10 Mourning Doves fledge in one season. The parents are so proud & loving on each other when that happens. I liked watching the Great Horned Owl mates talk to each other for years down the river before a storm downed limbs on the Eucalyptus tree they nested in yearly. Quite a handyman, too. Thanks so much for bringing all this wonder to your grateful audiences!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
