As a culinary graduate that “cooking has no rules” made me cackle a little because my former culinary professors would beg to differ. Cooking and baking is a science as much as it is an art form. It’s similar to makeup in many ways. You learn the rules so you can learn how to break them in ways that are creative.

Just as someone who is a fine artist, there’s no “rules” in creativity, but there is a set of general practices that are rules in fine art. I.e. you can paint oils over acrylics, but not acrylics on top of oils. Perhaps “the art of makeup” doesn’t have limitations but you have to know what to do with the materials to access your creativity in makeup first before you start!

I had to look up why acrylic over oil is a no-no, and it’s because the acrylic will flake right off, apparently-which is a good example of a rule that exists to literally keep your art from being ruined!! There are absolutely rules like that in makeup too, makeup theory doesn’t exist to stifle creativity, but to tell us how to use the tools we are given to create bomb-ass looks. It’s built on chemistry, biology, psychology-things we can’t change and must learn to work with.

Love what you say about makeup theory. I do watercolour painting. Lots of people hate painting with watercolour bc they only remember the paints they used as kids and never learned how to use it properly. If you don’t know the “rules” to watercolour painting, you make a muddy mess. I had to learn about colour mixing, water control and proper techniques to improve as a painter. So many people say “art has no rules! Do what you want!” but learning the rules helps sooo much. Plus, once you learn a rule, if you decide you don’t like it and it doesn’t work for you, you can break the rule! It does you no harm to learn about it in the end.

I really love the analogy to cooking chicken, because it reminds me of an Indonesian guy who was teaching me to make satay. He mentioned how most of the Westerners he teaches hate dry chicken, but to him it wasn't that much of a big deal. Preference varies with culture - just like whether you care about your chicken being dry, you might not mind your face looking round; but it's important to know that cooking chicken for a long time will make it dry, just like your blush position will change the shape of your face.

About concealer placement and „new technique”: when I see people smearing the same amount of product as they use before in triangle shape but now placing it in two massive dots and stripes from outer corners to almost hairline (using a high coverage concealer) I wonder, is there any difference? 😂 It’s still too much product under your eyes.

Yeah I think people don't realize that the more feathery, minimal application IS the technique. The shape of where you put it is, in my humblest of opinions, less important than knowing how much goo you need on your face-flesh. If you put too much goo on the flesh it doesn't matter where you put it or what shape it's in, it's too much goo.

Yes! I use this technique to cover the dark lines under my eyes so when I accidentally use too much it ruins the whole point of the technique. It becomes too thick and also I end up having to spread it out much further than I wanted to. And by putting it everywhere under the eye I don’t get the effect of lifting that particular shadow area.
@celestialynx
@celestialynx Жыл бұрын
@@Captain_Pink exactly. I have big undereye circles and I’ve never liked high coverage concealer. Even a tiny dot of tarte’s shape tape looked bad. But two dots technique is good for me because I have visible veins on the outer part of my undereye area and it give me a bit of freshness. But still, I use tiny amount only to cover, not to give myself a lifting 😅

What I saw happen was that people would use the two spots of concealer method but they were smearing WAY too much product on those two areas right off the concealer wand. The whole point of your technique was to use LESS product. If you still use too much product on your eye it doesn't matter where you put it. I always put some product on the back of my hand and pick up a little with my brush, the wands just have too much product on it to apply it directly to my skin.

I loved how you used cooking as an example. I'm a professional pastry chef/cake decorator and there are definitely RULES! You can wing it all you want, but there are rules to follow, and if you do, results will be so much better. Baking more so because of the chemistry of how things work together to make a delicious product. I have you to thank about using eye cream before applying concealer. I would get lines and crepey looking under-eyes after several hours of wear. Now it's lovely and magic and thank you for the tip! Also, that girl should have just bought her mom new brushes..🤢 lol

Exactly! When I bake stuff for myself, I may not use a food thermometer to precisely check the temperature of my food like the recipe says to use, or I put the oven on a higher temperature, etc. Does it turn out exactly the same as if I followed the recipe? No, but I still have fun doing it and I like the end result anyways. You need to know the rules before you can start breaking them.

To me the word "theory" is that if you do x, then you will have y outcome And "rules" are saying what you can/should or can't/shouldn't do It kinda comes down to semantics a bit with the misunderstanding. Using the words "rules" and "theory" to refer to the same thing is confusing for people who see the words quite distinctly and requires a form of translation To me personally: Makeup THEORY is that orange eyeshadow makes my blue eyes look brighter/more blue, and blue eyeshadow does not make my eyes look brighter. This can be useful information, especially in a more professional context which makeup artists like Robert exist in Makeup RULES are that bc I have blue eyes, I HAVE to wear orangey/brown eyeshadow and I CANNOT wear blue. This is unnecessarilly limiting and does not allow the individuality and creativity that Robert and his viewers value Like if I want to honor Chrissy from Stranger Things with blue eyeshadow I'm gonna do it! In that case my eye makeup is not intended to make me look more attractive by current standards of beauty, but to reference a character/a tv show and express myself! Or to say that contouring a certain way makes your wide face look wider so you "shouldn't" do that, or having your hair cut a certain way makes your square jaw look more square so you "shouldn't" do that... All unnecessary Many people will find that information helpful, but for some maybe it's because they WANT to emphasize their wide face or they WANT to emphasize their square jaw Using neutral language when explaining theories in makeup, fashion, hairstyling, etc would solve most of the broader problem imo This might be a big ask because it requires a rethink of our vocabularies and how we communicate ideas, but I think it would be a great improvement in terms of viewing makeup and related fields as artistic avenues for self-expression, which is what they are at their best (again imho as a more casual user of makeup) Even art like music and painting has theory behind it! And those theories are useful to see what you can play around with. Many incredible creative minds broke what we thought of as "rules" while using theory I think when that commenter said "rules" they were actually on the same page as Robert, they just had different connotations for the words "theory" and "rule"

I think when the more popular KZfaqrs or influencers do something… it is a given for most people. I think all makeup tutorials should include video in real light inside and outside to REALLY see how it looks. With no filter period. Lol

I remember when you started the ghost stories on Mondays. Which, btw, I'm so so grateful for because that's how I found Kara C, and I adore her she's so sweet and im so damn proud of her, she's lost so much weight she's about to have the extra skin removal surgery! 🥳🥳🥳 But yeah, I'm pretty sure I found you within a couple months of you starting youtube, I know I've seen all your videos🤣🤣 I'm totally not a stalker, at all, and don't have a Welsh twins shrine or anything (James if you see this, yes, I still offer it cheese daily) mmmkay time for me to shut up

Fr your channel is the reason I don't need to go on youtube and seek out a makeup tutorial every time I want to go out. I just have a better understanding of what I'm doing and why and now I can do perfectly fine looks on my own every time without needing to bring over my laptop and a tutorial to the mirror 😂😂

I can't use under eye color corrector. I have very dark inner corner/under eye but every single color corrector adds texture that looks super dry. I'd rather have darkness then flakes lol.

I had a go at applying my concealer the way you demonstrated - oh my gosh! It made SUCH a difference!! Your method has been, BY FAR, the best way to use concealer. I tend to use light coverage concealers, so I wasn't sure of your method would work...boy, was I wrong!! Thank you for sharing - you're a genius!

As an older woman, I can attest to not putting concealer anywhere under the eye. I have some wrinkles, and it will settle in there. Just a touch on the inner and outer corners blended does a nice job of brightening and opening up the eye. My younger self could get away with more and different placement. Not anymore! 🥺

I have been waitingggggg for you to comment on the concealer method and I’m so glad you finally did! I think the technique has been done differently as time goes on. When the point really is to use less, but people have used it as an opportunity to use just as much concealer as with the triangle method. Hope that makes sense. Glad you showed the difference in what you do versus what many others do 😊 I have used this technique for a long time (thanks to you) and I love it. Thank you!
