This is one big reason why this version of Robin Hood resonated so strongly with me; it brings in mystical aspects that no other ever did.

I've got a fantastic old book of Robin Hood. I'm reading it to a six year old Chinese boy..and its almost uncanny the effect it's having on him. He isnt only an outlaw, Robin, he IS a mystical character...a master of disguise in a way that's magical.."Robin carries many faces under one hood" as it says...

I have been a pagan my entire life, have studied the Old Ways, and this was the nearest I have ever seen to our beliefs portrayed onscreen. There is a Right handed path and a Left Handed path, which are curiously Opposite in Politics. There is no Good/Evil and you don't need some bloke stumbling about on a mountain with stones to tell you how to behave. You know instinctively. I don't need some 'God' telling me that if I shoot you I did a Bad thing, if I find you ill and nurse you back to health I was Good. It's a given. Governments exploiting you is Bad, which is what Robin was fighting against. Rich against poor.

@@jackp492 Fundamental Flaw there. I will leave you to figure it out. But here is a clue. What is 'God's Image?' is 'He' (Note) black, white, male female, gay trans? As we are repeatedly told it is He that immediately rules out 50% of the population. If 'He is black, there goes another chunk. And so on. I am fully expecting the rather childish " He is Everything' reply, but that is Not how you sell him is it?? God is Always depicted as a White hetero male. Christ is a Whit hetero Male, with Male followers. So that would imply that if you are not a white heterosexual male, you are incapable of doing all the 'good' things. There have been points in history when women have been denied souls. Only Now are animals being credited with them. The fact that Non white, non male people (and animals) do 'good' things Every day, without recourse to God telling them would make your argument invalid.

Yeah - it was(and still is) an amazing fantasy drama. I was always puzzled by the fact that it never got a repeat on ITV(only in the 2000s on ITV3), and of course Sky One showed it a couple of times. It was a big ratings hit - even competing against Doctor Who on Saturday night. Sadly - the production company(Goldcrest) ran into financial trouble, and that is why it finished after the third series(there was a rough outline for another series). It is in my opinion, the best dramatic telling of the Robin Hood myth ever put to screen. Notice how the 1991 Kevin Costner Robin hood film made use of a sarcen(much like Nasir in this series).

@@Locksley108 Herne the Hunter is a character from the 1602 Shakespearean play The Merry Wives of Windsor. He is a ghost who haunts Windsor woods in Berkshire. Because of the many similarities between the Celtic deity Cernunnos, also known as the Green Man, scholars believe that William Shakespeare used the Green Man as his inspiration for the spooky Herne the Hunter. Robin Hood is five centuries before Shakespeare so that is that!

Herne isn't scary. He is part of the essence of Nature. He is the bringer of new growth after Winter. He is a balance. Between Life and Death, feast and famine; the turning cycle of the year. Justice and Injustice. The Green Man. Which is why he is used here. he is the representative of the poor ,the oppressed, the hungry. the respecters of the planet The elite don't like that. Which is why we have Christianity! Which serves the rich, the well fed and the oppressors! The people who kill animals for fun
