@@robinwongI noticed you got a bit frustrated on Facebook with someone asking about the OM1 S-AF issue who was a bit behind the curve. I really enjoy your content on here. Just keep being you. Shame about the OM1 issue - and you were the one who I first heard speak out about it. Do you think you will get another EM1 Mark iii? I missed the chance to get a new EM1 iii because of cost and it's now discontinued. Did get an EM5 Mark iii though, which I like. Was thinking about a used EM1 ii instead but went for a new EM5iii just in time.

IGNORE the haters, Robin. To quote Frank Sinatra, "Some people get their kicks, stompin' on a dream." I've been watching your videos off and on for many years now, and you are hands-down the most honest, down to earth, real-deal photography-based content creator on KZfaq. You should be able to voice whatever opinion you have about the new OM-1. If you don't like the AF, you don't like the AF. It's really that simple. Also, it's very nice of that guy to send you an OM-1, but that doesn't mean you should sing false praises about it, if that's not how you truly feel. The fact that you gifted your MarkIII to someone else to balance out the karma is way more than most people would do, and shows what kind of a person you are. Just keep being yourself, dude. I - and I'm sure many others - am here mostly for you and your great personality and passion for photography, regardless of what brand of camera or lens or whatever you're discussing. Keep rocking, dude!

Thanks for saying that I am not obligated to say nice things about the gift. I always thought honesty is important. I work with the OM System OM-1 regularly and extensively in many different areas of photography and the OM-1 is a great camera that I really enjoy, but Robin is absolutely correct in his criticism of the autofocus. I can confirm this from intensive experience. I have firmware 1.5 and the problem is still there. The camera is really super well equipped, it's just a software problem and I hope they fix it. And yes, also I tried all the different settings from the toturials and it didn't solve the problem. I've even tried my own ideas that go beyond that, but without success. However, this only affects the S-AF and C-AF in very poor light and poor contrast. Scene detection works very well!

I came from Canon's latest mirrorless offerings and people told me the E-M1 MII was a "downgrade" and yes on paper in many ways it is. It's old. But I use this camera more. I enjoy shooting more. I stuck the basic 25mm 1.7 on the body and it was weeks before I took it off. With my other gear I just got so in the rut of finding the perfect way to shoot something that I found I didn't enjoy shooting as much. I don't do much professional work nowdays, but I shoot family stuff and I really wanted to just grab it and go. This camera does that. I can take two lenses and cover a huge range for what I want to shoot and it fits in any bag.

Robin, one of the great and REFRESHING things about your posts is your intense honesty. I am always glad to see you expound like this. It is so energizing. While a shortcoming in the OM-1 would concern me or maybe put me off from it, you put your finding in perspective so that I have a solid basis from which to investigate and consider rather than just run. I have to agree with you about so many content creators jumping around. Sure, they have their valid reasons, but sometimes there are unexpected reversals. You got flak just for talking outside the M43 bounds even while underscoring that everything has strengths, weaknesses, and optimal applications. Here you reiterated your preference for M43 and that doesn't conflict with anything you have said about other systems and formats. That is one of the great things about you and your approach. Thanks for putting so much of yourself into your posts. Looking forward to more...

I recently switched from the Canon 6D to the E-M1 Mark II for insect macro and wildlife. It's an incredible camera and I have no regrets. Thanks for your continued great videos and honesty. I purchased a used E-M1 Mark II just recently. It was a hard choice between it and the 5 mk III. I let the slightly bigger hand grip and battery guide my choice. It is my 1st non-compact digital camera. It instantly felt at home in my hands. I quickly grabbed my old trusted Nikon FG that I used for years and compared them. The body size is almost identical. Exactly what I wanted. Something highly capable but easy to put in a back pack or carry in a bag on my bicycle. Now I'm getting slowly familiar with it. Much appreciated to you and the other M4/3 advocates.

I recently upgraded to the OM-1 from the E-M1 mk2, and am content with the OM-1’s autofocus performance. Granted, there are times where shots are missed, but I am typically always using C-AF, and find the AF-target picker helps a lot when the camera is not selecting the subject the way I want it to. I find it is pretty easy to identify those moments while shooting, and make the adjustments to get the shot I need. I still love my E-M1 mk2, and after seeing this video, I may try to shoot with it more in those situations where the focus issue requires more effort. I do a lot of live performance photography, and typically use both bodies with the 4/3 Pro 14-35 f2 on one, and the 4/3 Pro 35-100 f2 on the other. Couldn’t be happier. My position relative to the stage determines which body gets which lens. I do look forward to the firmware update we are all hoping for!

You have always been honest and unbiased. Anyone who doesn't want truth is not someone you need to be concerned about. As for the EM1 mk 2 you are totally correct about it being worthwhile in 2023. Especially considering that the current firmware makes it essentially a different camera than version 1.0. Keep up the great coverage of 4/3, especially lenses which work well with any body. 😊

I loved my EM5II...but after looking at the EM1ii I decided to move to the EM1....and and very glad I did...The EM1ii does more than I will ever use, feels better in my hands and has all the features I will need for a long time to come.....I don't do sports photography so blazing autofocus is not an issue. I have not had a single failure with either of my EM1ii's (I have 2) in the past 3 years and from what I have heard for others that have the same camera, I should not have any for the near future. I am a happy Olympus shooter. It's nice to hear that Robin is happy with his since he abuses them constantly!! HA!

You come across as a genuinely good honest person Robin and you have helped me onboard to Olympus MFT (glass and bodies) with your advice on your channel. Thank you for your honesty and insight, it’s invaluable. I had to laugh this week when I saw two well-known content creators post that they were ditching their system (again). I get that perfectionists or people genuinely interested in their craft want the best tools for their job but changing every month on a whim doesn’t do it for me. It’s clickbait at its peak. Each to their own but it just doesn’t inspire trust in their opinions. Stay true to yourself and continue earning respect. You’ve got mine ✊

Thanks for the review, Robin. I appreciate your contentment and dedication to your work. I used a EM1 MKii for a few years. Loved the size and lenses. Wasn't fond of the low light performance of the sensor though. I'm using a Fuji XT-4 and love most everything about it and mostly pleased with the low light performance of the sensor. Once again...thank you for your videos and content.

Great video as always. I still use a 16mp EM1 mk1 as my main camera, and nobody has ever had an issue with the quality of my work. At the moment my backup is an EM10 mk3, which also produces fantastic images. I'm intending to change the EM10 for an EM1 mk2 later this year, at which time the EM1 will become my backup

Well said, Robin! I have two old Olympus E-PL1s, and they're still fantastic cameras (I have others but the Olys just deliver). I'm retired now and 90% of my shots are just casual snaps on my iPhone, but there's something about the Olympus rendition of colour that is unequalled. You are to be applauded for producing brilliant photographs, regardless of what you use. It's about the photographer, NOT the camera.

Affirmation . . . you are a good presenter, excellent English! Enthusiasm. As for Olympus, was just shopping for an extra body and the EM1 Mkii is an excellent choice, very similar in features to the ever popular EM5 Miii. I work with Pentax and Olympus . . . for the legacy glass! Good cameras, but to get the good glass is where the newest cameras on the block will empty your bank account. And . . . even at 70-years old . . . I don't hesitate to use a manual focus lens. After all, that's all we used back in the day!

Hey Robin, i fell in love with travel photography and upgraded to a Canon EOS 100D up from a basic point snd shoot. The irony of it all being that becoming a DSLR user meant that i sprnt more time fiddling with lenses and less time appreciating the scenes and endsd up falling out of love with it all. Ive wanted to go back to more fundamental point and shoot and picked up a E-M5 mk ii and pancake lenses. I know there will be some people that bash Micro 4/3 but it really is true that the best camera is the one you actually use! Thank you for your content and reviews as they have been invaluable in confirming what i want out of my photography experiences.

I have a different wildlife experience. I have E-M1 MK II and OM-1. For wildlife, OM-1 is much more reliable and gives more photos in focus. I use 300mm F/4.0. I heard that Panasonic 100-400mm does not work well on OM-1.

I tested the low-contrast problem with my OM-1. But I must say, the S-AF worked very well on a wedding in low-light. I do still have my M1 mark I which I love for streetphotography. And I still like using my M1 Mark II. I wouldn‘t have needed the OM-1, but I start enjoying the EVF and the HiRes without a tripod. Though my musclememory is still faster with the M1‘s.

Hi Robin! Finally I watched this video. I’m sorry I asked about this in the live stream. 😂 I was curious on why the OM1 wasn’t your main camera since it looks great in the specs. I hope OM can fix that issue in the future. BTW the concert pictures are amazing! They show true emotions I can almost hear the music.

Thanks for the kind words! No worries, I am glad you looked around, and you got your detailed answers here. The issue is whenever I said something bad about the OM-1, even if it is the truth, I get backlash, and some people just don't want to hear anything negative about the camera they love. Especially in Live Stream, I got to be even more careful. I don't hate OM-1 but it does have some valid issues which obstructed my work.

The OM-1 is in a class by itself for M4/3's cameras, especially for wildlife and birds in flight. Before getting mine I had almost switched totally to my D500 which was vastly superior to my older Olympus cameras. Now I'm hoping Panasonic gives us an G9II with contrast detect, that might challenge my OM-1. I use my Z6 for around town and low light photography, it was so cheap I couldn't resist.

m43 is great, but I have questioned my choice in a couple occasions where there was bad indoor diffused lighting at night, causing all my pictures to need major editing in terms of contrast and working out what way I would take the grain (Go with or major smudge out), all of which could have been avoided with a small full frame camera. Birthdays and late night wedding afterparties can be the worst for m43. this is the case even with my Oly 25m f1.2 lens (A combo that is almost similar in size and weight to a small light full frame camera with a 50m f1.8). low light indoor diffused lighting is the worst scenario, but also less than 10% of my total photography moments.

Thank you Robin for this video. M43 has a reputation of not being great in low light. IBIS helps if the subject isn’t moving very much. Another way to deal with low light is using fast glass. Is that how you captured the low light images in the club? Nicely done by the way. Which ones did you use? Three stumbles i’ve recently had. Was going to a video workshop taught by a Lumix Luminary and wanted to use my G9. I misplaced it due to inactivity related to Covid. Need another body quickly. Long/short I found a Craigslist EMD1 Mii for $300 with charger and two batteries. Great deal. The day before the workshop I found the G9. Two weeks ago I took a workshop taught my two Olympus Ambassadors. Been looking for the 12-40mm pro lens and craigslist had one for $300. It now lives on the 1 ii. I’ve had no problems with the autofocus. Battery life is good. Two things. Don’t like the on/off switch so the left. I can get use to it but for now it is annoying. Tried to take a video clip and hit the red button. Hard. Multiple times. No joy. Since I’ve been using Panasonic recently I have some nice fast primes. The 1 II is now my B cam for the G9. Love that camera. The jury is out on the 1ii but I have high hopes for it. Sorry about your OM1. I’ve never used one. I hope it is a setup problem. If that is so you can correct it. These silly bodies gray out choices and don’t give a clue as to why. The last time that happened I had to reset the camera to the original settings. What a PIA. Thank you for paying forward your unexpected generous gift. It was the right thing to do. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
