Jesus Christ came to pay your debt of sin, which is transgression of the law. The law being 10 commandments, stuff we KNOW in our conscious is bad like lying, stealing, murder, etc. I am going to use myself as an example, Have you ever lied?: Yes Have you ever stolen something big or small: Yes Have you ever taken Gods name in vain, which is blasphemy: Yes Have you ever lusted after a girl: Yes Jesus says whoever looks at a women with lust is an adulterer in his/her heart (Matthew 5:28) So I just admitted to being a lying, thieving, blaspheming, adulterer at heart. If im judged by those commandments, I am going to be guilty before God, and therefor going to hell. However, Jesus came to pay my debt of sin, like if you're in court and guilty before the judge. The only way you're not going to jail if you're guilty (jail being hell), is if somebody who HASNT committed the crime, pays your bail. Thats why Jesus right before he died said, "it is finished". (John 19:30) "It is finished" meaning paid in full. So, how do we accept this gift so that we could be forgiven of our sins and go to heaven? The Bible makes it clear. John 6:27-29 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” John 3:14-16 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
