The lantern shield is made during the Renaissance era, being able to hold a shield for night and fitted with spikes. My knowledge is a bit rusty on this, but it's considered to be the swiss knife of that era, mainly made for self protection amongst other uses. It faded out when people realized it's too unreliable. Atleast, that's what I think.
