I like how the movie canonically establishes that the reason the bad guys ended up losing in the end to Robocop was simply because they forgot to read the Goddamn field manual for the explosive rifle. As soon as Murphy and Lewis use it the way it's intended (ie. on a bipod or from a prone position as opposed to hip-firing like morons), they get 100 percent accuracy.

And Emil (Paul McCrane) was played by Montgomery MacNeil (the sensitive, singing, red-haired kid who comes out) from _Fame,_ or if you like, the arrogant jerkwad Dr. Robert Romano from _ER._ He lost his hair early, though; he was only 25 when they filmed _RoboCop,_ but he looks like he’s in his 40s. It’s weird that he started his career playing sweet, sensitive characters, and ended up going on to play a lot of antagonists. He and Ronny Cox are both good musicians, as well.

If you’re wondering about Robocop’s gun, it’s a dressed up Beretta 93R, a machine pistol, he was originally going to use a Desert Eagle, but the trigger guard was too tight for the suit’s fingers to fit, so they used the Beretta 93R since it has an extra large trigger guard, the fact it can fire full auto and burst also appealed to the filmmakers as well

"I'd buy that for a dollar!" Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Darryl Cox, Joan Pirkle, Donna Keegan, and Spencer Prokop. Automobile Enthusiast Fact: The 6000 SUX was built from the body of a 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass four-door sedan. Family Affair Fact: Kurtwood Smith's future wife, Joan Pirkle, has a small role as Dick Jones' (Ronny Cox) secretary, Barbara Clegg, who he flirts with before a meeting. They are still married to this day. Someone's Else Problem Fact: Nancy Allen first arrived on set when Paul Verhoeven was shooting the deliberately cheesy sitcom "It's Not My Problem" which appears on television screens throughout the film. Allen was initially horrified to think that she had signed on to make a film with an incompetent director. Movie Magic Fact: Most shots of Robocop and the police car show him getting out or preparing to get in. Peter Weller didn't fit into the police car in full costume. When he needed to be in the car, he wore the top part of the costume and sat in his underwear. To maintain the illusion that RoboCop wears the entire suit while inside a car, most shots show his robotic feet exiting first. What Script Fact: For the attempted rape scene, writer Edward Neumeier originally had RoboCop (Peter Weller) shoot past the victim's cheek, hitting and killing the rapist. While getting ready to shoot the scene as scripted, Paul Verhoeven noticed that Donna Keegan's legs were spread apart, giving him the idea to have RoboCop shoot between her legs and hit the rapist in the genitals. Neumeier loved the idea and that was how the scene was shot.

"He's a replacement for our fallen brothers in blue, and now, what? We just shoot him??? I'm out!" They also don't say it but do lay bare that Clarence works for Dick Jones who also controls the police and who needs unbearable crime levels to exist, a string of dead cops leaving other cops unwilling to work, so they strike, just and only so that Dick Jones can make the city NEED to be policed by ED-209. 18:38 this scene here almost sank the entire film. For some reason the Director insisted on it. The keys were almost uncatchable. The rubber gloves were so thick that Peter Weller couldn’t close his hand in time to catch the keys. They would bounce off his hand before he could close his hand. They did so many takes and fell so far behind in production that the studio almost shut them down. The scene you see in the movie was the final shot. They got it one time and decided not to take a chance in trying to get a back up shot.

This first movie gets so many things right on so many levels. It's so good and was everywhere in 1987. Personally, I like Robocop 2 (I love the audio of the guns :)) but with a different director, it goes in a direction it probably shouldn't have. Robocop 3 is complete trash imho. The 2014 Robocop movie is a remake and worth a watch- if anything, just to see what they got right & what they got wrong. Peter Weller also did the voiceover for the recently released game Robocop Rogue City, I've not played it myself but it gets very good reviews. 'RoboCop Returns', is going to be a direct movie sequel to this first instalment (and ignores all the series' other films) and is currently in development.

Besides the two direct sequels, there are also multiple shows, a reboot, comics and videogames. If y'all are gamers, I highly recommend playing the first person shooter RoboCop: Rogue City

I saw this when it first came out on VHS when I was 10. Still one of my favourites. If you haven't yet reacted to the rest of Paul Verhoeven's films then you really need to see 'Total Recall' and 'Starship Troopers'.

23:02 See: _On The Air_ (1992) TV Series. Miguel Ferrer plays Buddy Budwaller, a no-nonsense TV producer on a fictitious 1957 live TV show where everything always goes wrong. So, five years after _Robocop,_ he WAS "Buddy Boy". In-between, he was FBI Forensic Specialist Albert Rosenfied on _Twin Peaks._

I was about ten years old back in 91 when I watched this and terminator, loved them both, but the satire in Robocop is the chef’s kiss, I think it is part of the reason why I am so sarcastic in everything I say

Peter Weller studied with a renowned mime artist from what I recall hes done a few interviews/videos about the process. The thing that makes it stand out is the use of actual practical effects vs cgi. As others have said take a look at Total Recall and Starship troopers. Verhoven at his best!

There were 3 Robocop Movies and the crappy 2014 remake that we don't talk about. Robocop also had a couple cartoon series, and a mini series called Prime Directive. In Prime Directive they made a second Robocop to go after Murphy, and his son is grown and works for OCP.

Sadly I don't think we focus that much on Murphy outside of him trying to wipe his memory again to burry his pain of loosing his family, there are other things the second movie focuses on, and the third is a very "in it only for the action" kind of movie. The made for TV fallow up, Robocop: Prime Directives is a bit of a mixed bag, there is a really dumb plot about a super virus trying to eat up people in the real world, and stuff, but the good stuff hits hard, and it's everything you wanted between Murphy, his Son, and what an aging Robocop struggling to find his way in the world looks like.

Welcome to the sadistic world of Paul Verhoeven, that's right, this politically incorrect director loved explicit and brutal violence, a rebel at heart, he did whatever he wanted and studios like Orion and Carolco financed his madness, you have to see his other famous movies like: TOTAL RECALL and STARSHIP TROOPERS, and I also recommend HOLLOW MAN, an interesting version of The Invisible Man with Verhoeven's brutal style. Too bad his career in Hollywood was short, I think a little more than 10 years.

And what made him good was that his violence (and nudity) was never gratuitous. It always served a purpose. It was never gore for the gore, but to emphasize a point.

Just the whole atmosphere is awesome. Semi-futuristic, gritty, poking fun at corporatism, consumerism/excess, indifference to violence/death. I was a kid when this came out and was a HUGE fan. The first-person shots were awesome too, you don't see that a lot. The theme song is cool too.
