A new kind of fiber developed by researchers at MIT and in Sweden can be made into cloth that senses how much it is being stretched or compressed, and then provides immediate tactile feedback in the form of pressure or vibration. Such fabrics, the team suggests, could be used in garments that help train singers or athletes to better control their breathing, or that help patients recovering from disease or surgery to recover their normal breathing patterns. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an independent, coeducational, privately endowed university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our mission is to advance knowledge; to educate students in science, engineering, technology, humanities and social sciences; and to tackle the most pressing problems facing the world today. We are a community of hands-on problem-solvers in love with fundamental science and eager to make the world a better place.
The MIT KZfaq channel features videos about all types of MIT research, including the robot cheetah, LIGO, gravitational waves, mathematics, and bombardier beetles, as well as videos on origami, time capsules, and other aspects of life and culture on the MIT campus. Our goal is to open the doors of MIT and bring the Institute to the world through video.

0:13 - to creators: wow! you can use this to greatly improve swimming suits and make it "smart"! this type of surface convert turbulent flow to laminar like a dolphin skin! if such material is used in a pilot's suit, the pilot will be able to withstand more G-forces than usual... soft manipulators and transforming composites are next gen ! also this materials will save many lives with muscular dysplasia... Love MIT! From "Black Mesa" with love! 🙂

Responsive robotic cloth: Exists. Me: This might be able to solve the stiffness problem in spacesuits. Them: We'll help people sing by forcing them to belly breathe.
@luke_fabis
@luke_fabis Жыл бұрын
A corset that squeezes your belly and tugs on your ribs to help you sing isn't going to kill you if it fails. And it doesn't need to be exceptionally robust either. Generally, you want to prove out a concept and identify potential issues before you invest too much into applying it to a big, expensive project like a spacesuit.
