I figured this very same thing out by myself, about thirty years ago. I completely agree with this speaker. This is a logical way of thinking, but problem is that most of the people just doesn't understand, nor do they care when you start to talk about this kind of ideas. They need proof that it can work. GOOD LUCK!

I resent his "I know more than you tone." I knew this too in 994 when I was first exposed computers, I was 17. Many other people have known this from earlier (See star trek and star wars creators and almost any kind of sci-fi writer) I lost an accounts payable job to a software bot in 1998, and made a joke of it since it was ironic my degree was in Management Info Systems, which deals with aims to proving workplace processes thru the application of tech

***** A universal Basic income is one alternative for a transitional period to RBE... but a universal basic income is already being seriously considered as an idea in Switzerland and a referendum on it will be held I think in 2016 (cannot be sure on the exact date). In UK, the existing benefits system would have to undergo a relatively minor alteration to create the UBI. Other countries that have a version of the welfare system could also pull it off, as well as those that don't. Reality of the situation is that once the idea starts rolling in one country, it will be impossible to stop it...

I don't think he is talking about a Utopia, it sounds more along the lines of necessary evolution similar to what discovering fire did in changes to the human race including the size and intelligence of the human brain. It also freed up time for creative thought and development that took us to where we are today. We, as a species are outstripping the planets ability to sustain us, change is the next step, but what change?

Ever since I was a kid, I was always thinking about how and why things are as they are in this society. Humans are greedy, we constantly seek profit and growth to satisfy our endless needs. We contribute to society in a way that doesn't necessarily suit us and we don't think far. After multiple reflections, I ended up with the same conclusion as Federico and other thinkers. However, in the case of income, we technically don't need money if we can do things ourselves and do barter. If we can decrease our consumption needs, reduce our costs and be more self-sufficient, basic and vital needs like physiological needs would be fulfilled. Of course, this transition can be made by learning new skills and by changing our mindset. Robots should not be used for mass production but as facilitators, as humans' companions that permit to take care of the most dangerous, time-consuming, technical jobs and make life easier.

I see more than a few holes in your argument, for such short argument to have that many questionable things its an indication of an idea that lacks development. The most likely scenario is poverty an extinction for those losing their jobs. Don't even feel pity for them. Did they care about giving farm animals horrible lives? Did they care about the billions living in poverty? Did they move a finger to save hundreds of thousands of species forced to extinction? They will be treated as they deserve. Only a huge shift in consciousness could save the masses but that have to happen when they have something to sacrifice. I am sure they all will have their egoistic, materialistic and capitalistic blindfolds falling when it is too late...

We have the technology. We just have to implement it. Solar and wind could be used (without needing to store the power) if we network the power grid globally. What is stopping us is the need for competing companies to make a profit. (I mean you just can't share - how would that look?) Unless that obstacle can be overcome, Geo-thermal seems to be the best possible option that everyone loves to ignore (probably because power would become to cheap for anyone to make any money from it).

Federico's POV is not a personal "vision" it's the destiny of all us. About the timings i don't agree, because he doesn't takes in proper consideration the "fight" against the actual powers that rule the world of today: capitalism and christianity. And all these powers are fighting one against another (although it may seem otherwise). I think that technological progress will take something about 1/2 centuries to push this destiny to reality, destroy capitalism and christianity and become both: the new God and the new sense of life for all people.

Thanks to exponential advances in technology, all jobs will soon be obsolete. He advocates we use this technology to create an abundance while evolving out of this capatilistic value system. Once all of their needs are met, people who truely enjoy designing and creating will continue do so without a monetary incentive. Money would be obsolete. I recommend you watch Zeitgeist: Moving Forward and Paradise or Oblivion, to help you further understand this train of thought.

There are some jobs that won't get stolen by any robots any time soon. Science, engineering, health care... but it's true that nobody needs a job. All we need are food, shelter, water, electricity, clothing, basic services - the real reason why we need jobs is that this world is ruled by private property. The means of production are in the hands of a few private companies. That's something we must change.

Richard Green And what happens when no one can compete with technology and automation? If humans are not owed resources just for being human, then I guess we all just die out by your logic.

Why do you have to compete to live? isn't that why we created tech? more food, better medicine, travel, etc etc? Or did we create it just to have more jobs?
@nathansmith3244
@nathansmith3244 7 жыл бұрын
indeed with that logic when AI decides it needs water to cool it's super computer network it should take it away from humans cause it doesn't need them while at leas most of them it might keep a few in cages to fix anything it can't fix. if they are not smart enough dispose of them.

Perhaps we should change the rules of the game. Perhaps our society does owe us a living. Perhaps our society should find appropriate endeavors (vs jobs) to help us be productive members.

1. Automation is purchased because it makes production faster / better / cheaper. 2. Most developed societies will allow you live at some level without needing to compete. But, if you want to do interesting work, you either have to create your own or be eligible for what others have created.

No, minimum wage doesn't cut it so we outsourced. Some things we didn't want to outsource like ammunition, military gear, helmets, camouflage, etc., so we use private prisons to hire employees at far below minimum wage to produce most of it.

Partly. If Humans didn't have the technology and were for example in an area that is like a virtual desert where resources were initially scarce, then you have too many people in that specific area (globally speaking, we aren't really approaching the maximum carrying capacity of the planet) and you need to ration. What it comes down to is, 'intelligent management of Earth's resources' - not 'how much one can afford'. Earth is abundant in natural resources, problem is the system we live in

Honestly, a very naive view of things. The assumption that more free time will lead to more fulfilling life is wrong IMHO. Yes, there will be more people creating beautiful works of art or researching, but there will also be a (much much bigger) number of people that will waste their free time consuming mindless media, fueling misinformation and division. We see (specially today in 2021) what free time + social media can do. Work not only provides financial means to sustain ourselves and prevents our minds from dying, but also, and more importantly, keeps us connected to reality and the world.

What we need is for groups to start forming these open source, DIY, technology societies on plots of land like hippies did in the 60s but with technology. Prove it. I think it can work personally but it will take a lot of doing to start off then the models can be copied again and again.

The best way to do this is probably to first remove the top down economic levers that most governments are imposing which siphons more than the fair share of profit up to a rutheless Oligarchical class and either stop there or encourage laborers/the public to own more capital, particularly with automation equipment so that the efficiency/money it produces supports them.

***** Oligarchs certainly have muddled definitions since the 19th century, the US could technically be described as a Democratic Republic but that aside, most of the people in the US have such a misunderstanding of the meaning it might right to discard them. Grass-roots Liquid Democracy is what is needed to protect Rights now, it represents the people through direct and representative power and makes Oligarchies impossible to sustain. What do you think?
@Maltcider
@Maltcider 9 жыл бұрын
This is worst problem of corrupted governments, they either end in radical freedom or the rise of authoritarianism. For every decent dictator there are many despotic ones.As it is, the US is in very similar preconditions that Germany had which led to Hitlers rise to power. The societal benefits a Philosopher King could do, like in The Republic, is minuscule, and a temporary improvement lasting only 1 or 2 generations at best, compared to a system truly empowering individuals. The good political ideas have already been eloquently constructed, it's a matter of activism to get them implemented. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely" Is there any particular way you would select a proper dictator? And what about ensuring a worse one doesn't replace him?

Why can I not find out the cost of administrating Social Protection in my Country and be able to decide if Universal Basic Income, payable to all regardless of income and wealth or status may be more efficient and cheaper than the present system of means tests, application forms, poverty traps and bureucracy that exists? I am sure it is high. THe transition from work to no work will be painful because there will be a fight for the work-free status and some people will still be needed to do the drudge work. How do you reward them ? THe fight will be on to take wealth from the owners of robots, people-less factories etc. This will be highly unpleasant. Increasingly people will work not for money but as a hobby or for praise but this will take time to accomplish.

I have issue with scientists talking about economics. Most scientist who pioneer technology do not make any significant amount of money from their technology which means the people who bring stuff to market are not the minds at NASA or professors.

This is mentioned in Bhavishya Puran and Shrimad Bhagvatam (Scriptures of India). As population increases and people will not have food to eat they will be eating one another. These are the symptoms of Kaliyuga (the dark age) The world will move back to self sustainable communities and farming, depending completely on nature... The only people who know how to grow food will be able to eat... lucky will be those who will be favored by nature and mother earth... So instead of putting money in bonds and gold... the best asset will be in land... It will help your future generations in the long run... agree?
