I studied music in college with Andrew, he rode a unicycle to class and wore a bow-tie almost everyday. I don't think anyone quite fully understood him, but we all knew he was an absolute genius. I think he performed at least once with every instrument in our weekly performance forum class. He absolutely deserves this!

Yeah, I actually think it has certain pretty interesting elements to it. It has a clear melodic motif (D# B C#) and what makes it interesting is that when the three-note motif is repeated, it starts on the off-beat. It's also quite logical, since you have two repeats of the three-note motif and on the third time it almost starts again but ends differently. The shape of the melody actually works quite well. A much worse melody would be either much more repetitive or it would have no repetition at all, and it would also either have a much less interesting rhythm (for example just quarter notes all the time) or the rhythm would just be nonsensical.

The last two were the only two to bring mostly different chord progressions. Because of that, they get the most props from me. Everyone else did variations on Rob's songs. I like last runner up most, but I agree that the winner deserved to win due to sheer creativity and polish.

So this was amazing to be part of. I didn't win, didn't get showcased...but I'm part of it. I'm part of 506 other musicians to be inspired by you Mr. Scallon. I will take this as a learning experience and the next contest you put out I will do better, then better the one after that and maybe...just maybe, I'll win one of these times. Wow..The "French small town, outside a bistro on a mild summer evening, the air filled with love" type of style that won was actually my first impression of what that melody should sound like. And Mr. Van Vlear absolutely nailed it. More of this, please!
