Yes, as another suggested "Morning Has Broken" is perhaps his most famous and "Wild World". Cat Stevens changed his name. Stevens formally converted to the Muslim faith on 23 December 1977, taking the name Yusuf Islam in 1978. That's why you see Yusuf on the videos alongside Cat Stevens. Thank you for your appreciation of the elders. Yes to Harry Chapin ("Cats in the Cradle") and Jim Croce ("Time in a Bottle") too.

This song actually is about generation gap: when he sings in the higher key, he's playing the kid's part who feels not understood by his father. That's why he has to "go away".

I was going to comment along these lines. It’s not that the son isn’t interested I hearing the stories. It’s more that the father thinks the son should live his life they way the father thinks. Yet the father doesn’t really know or understand the son.

I've always thought that the song is about the generation gap of the WWII generation and their kids (the boomers). This is especially because the song was written around 1970 (on Tea for the Tillerman album) during the Vietnam War and their protests, after the Summer of Love, during the high of hippie culture. It was a time when society split in so many ways. The song highlights the two viewpoints; both being valid, but not compatible with each other.

@@KevinSchmitt77 The song predates Tillerman, and was originally written as part of a proposed musical project called Revolussia. The son is contemplating leaving his village to fight in the Russian Revolution and his Father begs him to stay. The 2nd trip thru each verse includes a contra melody from the backing vocalists while Cat sings both Father/Son roles. It's the first time I remember this technique being employed, and it really adds to the brilliance of the lyrics...

In a modern context, the song works very well as a conversation between a gay son who has chosen to live out of the closet and a father trying to discourage him from that lifestyle choice.

You are correct but this song was the first song of a musical about the Russian revolution. Cat never finished the musical but the son in the song is going away to join the bolsheviks (Lenin/communists) to overthrow the Russian monarchy and do away with serfdom. The son is an idealist, the father is pragmatic. The father is trying to convince the son not to follow his dream but to stay home and live the life the father has lived.

Yes Rob Squad, it is a tear jerker. I'm 76 years old and my father has been gone for 15 years. He had a long good life and we had many good times together. And here I am with no children going into my senior years widowed by myself. Songs like this really tugs at the heart strings. Good song, great reactions.

I was born in 1968. My parents were 41 and 39. My grandparents (on my dad's side) lived next door. A lot of my childhood was spent on my grandfather's porch, listening to to him tell stories about the farm he grew up on in the 1890s. My dad was born in 1928. I'm a musician. I have tried singing this song, and my voice cracks, it means so much to me. I love you guys. Been following for years. I'm a poor artist and musician, and don't have a way to contribute financially, but I hope that the fact that you give this old guy happiness, and that I could see us being friends and neighbors, can be ok. Much love, to both of you.

This is one of those songs that never fails to get the waterworks going. Two weeks from today, I will become a grandpa for the fifth time, and everything in this song makes me think of my little Chloe and how I can hardly wait to spoil her absolutely rotten. “Morning Has Broken” (which was a 1900 hymn) and “Peace Train” are two musts from Cat Stevens (Yusuf). He recorded under Cat Stevens and then converted to Islam, changing his name to Yusuf.

Amber, I saw it. I saw that 'melting into the moment' occur when Cat hit the final chorus in full voice, and you were ready to just drop into the sound of his singing. Cat is one of the blessings we had back in the 1970 to 1974 period, where he was dropping ridiculously good material - 6 albums in five years!! So many hits, and so many incredible, artful, soulful songs that were rarely played on radio.. The man was overflowing with musical passion, and he plays a great piano ("Sitting" is a great example), & a unique guitar, among many instruments. 'Tea for the Tillerman' (#206 on Rolling Stone's 500 Best Albums of All Time) to 'Foreigner' was his golden stretch. Hits: Wild World, Peace Train, Moonshadow, Morning Has Broken, Oh Very Young - any would be stellar on your YT. Standouts: The Wind, How Can I Tell You, How Many Times, Can't Keep It In, Where Do the Children Play, Silent Sunlight, Angelsea, Sorry, going overboard. Excited to see Stevens' effect taking hold with you, and just want to reel in a new devotee!

I have been playing duets with my friend, Tim since we met as hired church musicians back in 1990 and this is one of the songs we cover. I sing the "father" parts and Tim sings the "son" parts and we both play guitar. It has always been one of my favorite songs that we do together. We will be playing in a benefit for Toys For Tots in December. I can't wait.

This is the only song I know of where the use of counterpoint - father singing to son and son responding - is flawlessly used. He was iconic in my time and I actually wore out the Teaser and Firecat tape playing over and over in my car. He didn't deserve the malice he had to endure when he chose to adopt the peaceful tenet of his religion. Being banned from the US was an extreme reaction and totally unnecessary; I'm glad that was finally revoked and I was able to see him perform in NYC. One of the great voices of my generation. An equally great talent would be Harry Nilsson, who definitely needs to be sampled here. Thanks guys, always entertaining.

He is a magical wonder. I grew up with his songs & lyrics. He has a special kind of magic. His name is now Yusaf Islam. A personal change that he made a long while ago. Beautiful with such a unique sound, This song is a conversation between a father and son, with the father counseling his son to stay home, settle down and find a girl, telling him this is the path to happiness - after all, it worked for him. The son, though, feels compelled to leave and is frustrated because his dad makes no effort to understand why or even hear him out. Thanks guys, Peace

I'm 67 yo and I miss my Grandfather to this day. I remember hearing this song on our local FM station I then went straight to Peaches and bought the album, still have it to this day. When Amber started to tear up so did I. Glad I found you two.

"Oh Very Young" by Cat Stevens is one of my favorites by him. You want a Father Son song... Try "The Living Years" by Mike + The Mechanics. That is Mike Rutherford's group... Mike is one of the founders of the group Genesis. Both groups you should give a listen to.

Hits so hard to any many with a son. When you realize that this is a man trying to communicate his love and wisdom to his son, who is not ready and able to hear it and pushes back on him, it becomes so much deeper. Timeless.

Cat Stevens converted to Islam decades ago and changed his name to Yusuf Islam, though he still performs as Cat Stevens. Terrific song! But you MUST react to his classic hit "Peace Train." It is one of the greats.

There also might be just a bit of a fuss over the fact that Cat Stevens/Yusef Islam as a Muslim when the Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989 issued a death fatwa against author Salman Rushdie made comments endorsing the goal of killing Rushdie. I don't think many people trust "Cat Stevens" or his peace music image BS, he is Yusuf Islam and showed what his spirit is with his comments.

+1 on Peace Train. So hard to imagine the impact of a singer/songwriter releasing an album and having it become a Gold Record in a matter of *days*, and then to realize this guy did that three or four times over between 1970 and 1974 and those records have sold millions and millions of copies all over the world. So there's the new video in acknowledgement of the 50th anniversary of "Peace Train", easily be found under 'Yusuf peace train', in which he sings with other artists around the world. I don't know if there is any video of the original release, but the production is perfect and set a standard for the time. The clap tracks alone are a hook that you'll never get out of your head. if you want to feel the power of the song melody and lyrics, listen to the 'Round the World' production. If you want to get into why the world remembers this after half a century, listen to the original with the lyrics in front of you-and be ready to clap along.

Interesting that the father (lower voice) is talking directly to his son and offering advice, but the son (higher voice) is talking ABOUT his father and not directly to him. Anyway, this song is derived from a play where the son wants to go to war in support of the Russian Revolution and his father is trying to talk him out of it. On a side note, I was a teen when this song first came out and I learned to play it on my guitar, obviously taking up the feelings and emotions of the son. Today I'm 65 and still play this song, only now I am the father. Funny how life is, and yes I have a son. God bless him.

Brian, wish I could buy you a beer. Mine is the same story, I bought a Cat Stevens songbook at 16 when this song came out in 1970 and played it constantly, relating to the Son's viewpoint. About a year ago my own 22-year old son heard it somewhere texted me to ask "Have you ever heard of a Cat Stevens song called 'Father and Son?" I found that 50-year old songbook and it fell open to this song, I had played it so much back then. I texted hem back, "Yeah, I have" and started playing it again after 40 year or more, and or course relating to the Father's verses.

I remember hearing this song when my older brother played it, “Tea for the Tillerman.” Then, my brother graduated from high school and this was what the valedictorian read as her speech to the parents. All of it was these lyrics. It was 1970. It’s about standing up to your parents and doing the right thing in the face of Vietnam, civil rights, women’s rights, climate, overpopulation. Everything baby boomers get blamed for but fought to fix. It’s a laid back song with a powerful, protest message.

Cat Stephens, aka Yusuf Islam (he changed his name when he converted to Islam years ago), is an incredible singer-songwriter from Britain who has some truly timeless and meaningful songs in his repertoire. He's one of my favorites - I always include some of his music whenever I'm making a meaningful music playlist. Peace Train, Moonshadow, Morning Has Broken, and so many more are just masterful pieces of poetry and music. I highly recommend checking out more music from him.

This has always been my favorite Cat Stevens song. Morning Has Broken is also beautiful and has a beautiful piano intro. He really has a lot of great songs and was very popular in the’70’s.

It's hard to imagine a song with more truth in it than this short song. It is beautiful and your reactions were beautiful. I think Amber had a stronger reaction than Jordan. Amber, I just heard you refer to your grandfather as Pop-Pop. That is what we called my grandfather. I love you guys.

Jay, just think about how much more you get to pass on to your son and daughters now that you have this channel. One of the great things thing my son and I ever bonded with is the love of music. He thanked me recently for showing him all the different genres of music and the passion I have for them.

The album Tea for the Tillerman was a large chunk of the soundtrack of my college years. I have loved Cat Stevens and his wonderfully unique voice since the day I first heard him. I know you have limited time for all the choices you are offered but if you get a chance, even in your spare time, ANYTHING from this album is amazing.

I love that you guys found meaning in this song that made it special for you. After all these years of listening to him, Yusuf Islam's (aka Cat Stevens), music can still bring me to tears. I haven't seen anyone else mention it, so I'll add this: the song is, "Father AND Son," i.e. it's a dialogue between the two, with the father trying to get the son to stay & listen to him and the son wanting to leave, but giving a speech more than actually listening. Islam has said himself that he saw it from both points of view and there are definite lyrics in the song that show us both father & son are right in some ways but wrong in others. Think about these lines: The father says to the son: "You're still young; that's your fault. There's so much you have to know." The son says, as much to himself as to his father: "How can I try to explain - when I do he turns away again... From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen." As much as the father offers some sound advice that the son would benefit from hearing, he's also being high-handed & condescending in a way that ensures his son will tune him out.

It's about conflict between a father and son. The verses alternate between the father's point of view (advising patience and caution) and the son's (impatient and frustrated).

Hi. In case you don't already know, he came onto the music scene in the 60s and had some great hits both in the UK and the US, then, he disappeared from the music scene. Following two decades in which he performed only music which met strict religious standards, he returned to making secular music in 2006. So he was gone a very long time. I had his vinyl record/album Catch Bull At Four.

I was in Middle School when I discovered Cat Stevens . This was 1970/71 Tea for the Tillerman. Teaser & the Fire cat. Great memories!! Cat Stevens a legend!!

"Tillerman" was pretty good, and had this terrific track, and "Wild World" as standouts, but also had a few fillers on it. His next effort -"Teaser And The Firecat" didn't. It was really good from start to finish. That's why it's his best work This was Cat at his peak. After that he was still successful, but his records became more uneven to average. Then he went into the religious muslim thing, and he changed his mane and dropped off the music scene.

I was 18 or 19 when I first heard this song. I never knew my father, never met him. Hearing this for the first time was like telling me that finding my own way was perfectly fine - that everyone has to do that, whether you have a role model or not. So it made me feel less abandoned. Thanks for bringing that memory back.

Throughout my childhood my Dad shared with me all of his favorite songs and artists with Cat Stevens being one of many. I admit that Cat Stevens wasn't one of my favorites at first but it did always stand out to me as special nonetheless. As I grew older I found myself enjoying his music more and more but now that my Dad has passed away it holds a special place in my heart and this song especially. I can't listen to it without crying and it's the same reasons I cry that I also love this song

One of my all-time fave songs of any genre. For me, the most poignant aspect is the gentle counter melodies sung by Alun Davies (Yusuf's longtime guitarist) after the instrumental break. (05:46). While the father sings, the son underneath the main line is saying "Away, away, away, I know I have to make this decision alone, no..." and when the son takes the lead, the father pleads, "Stay, stay, stay, why must you go and make this decision alone?"

Harry Chapin does a song called "Cats in a Cradle" that is all about a son looking at his life and seeing how much he is like his father. You should check it out if you haven't yet. Cat Stevens also does "Morning has Broken", and "Moonshadow" both great songs.

I was going to suggest the same song, although I interpret it more along the lines that it is about a father who didn't have time for his son when the son was young, but was then disappointed that his son didn't have time for him once the son was grown. And the father realized that his son was like him.

More, more, more Cat Stevens! His albums "Tea for the Tillerman", "Teaser and the Firecat", and "Catch Bull at Four" were filled with such great music. They were tremendously impactful on me when I was in High School. Suggested songs for reactions: Sad Lisa Miles From Nowhere On the Road to Find Out How Can I Tell You Morning Has Broken Bitterblue Sitting Many more of course, but these are IMHO real beauties outside of his big hits from the albums.

I played this for my Dad to hear the night before I left for boot camp in 1980. A way of saying it's time to do my own thing. Hearing Cat sing from both perspectives, Dad loved this song. Another great song of a parent child dynamic is Jim Croce's "I Got A Name". I always thought if I had a kid, that would be the song I would play to them, to empower them.

Yes, this song brings tears to my eyes. My father died unexpectedly in 2016. My youngest is named after him. The saddest part of the song is that the father was probably right, but the son wouldn't listen.

When he was younger he nearly died by drowning . He prayed to God to save him and he then he would dedicate his life to him. He researched all the different religions and decided on Islam and changed his name to Juseph Islam thank you for such honesty in your reactions. I had read at the time that the reason Cat Stevens converted to Islam was because it gave him peace of mind. He had fallen into substance abuse and had plenty of women around and he was destroying his life, that's when he found Islam.....not after almost drowning as a kid since he didnt convert until 1977 when he was 29 years old and already a pop star.

Every since my dad first sang this to me and showed me the song. I can never listen to the whole thing without crying. Im lucky my dad is still around. The reason I cry is not only because its such a great song. But it always makes me think of when the time will come when my dad wont be around anymore.

I was smart enough to interview my grandmother and write down her stories. I’m so glad I did. She traveled in a covered wagon, went to school on a horse, and graduated from school in the 8th grade. There many more stories and I would not have known them if I hadn’t sat down with her and let her talk. Older people love to talk about their life. Just ask!!!

My foster brother and his hippie friends introduced me to a lot of good music at 13, they all were, 17,18, was their little city slicker friend. I would sit with them in a circle, play Peace Train, and we all would clap our hands to the rhythm in the right part...Cat Stevens, yah! My Brother played Wild World for me when I had to leave...
