I love this song. It’s actually two different songs combined. House Rent Blues and Bourbon, Scotch and Beer. George definitely put his own flair on it. And yes, it is great live. He throws a couple extra lyrics in. Other Thorogood songs to hear: I Drink Alone, The Sky Is Crying (Elmore Leonard cover), Gear Jammer, Get A Haircut, Talk Too Much, Move It On Over(Hank Williams cover), Who Do You Love (Bo Diddley cover), Willie And The Hand Jive (Willie Dixon cover) Born To Be Bad.

Lol, You meant Elmore James for The Sky is Crying. Elmore Leonard is an author who wrote the books that Get Shorty, Jackie Brown, and others were made from. Honest, but funny mistake.

Got to disagree. I love the live versions (and have seen him play it several times, both in arenas and in clubs). But for this tune, the studio version is the best, IMO. First, there is the groove. The groove never stops. Its filthy. And the tone on that guitar! The live versions have showmanship and are fun. But the groove and the tone make this version really special.

Amber was right about how this song plays live. Every live version will be a bit different as George does a lot of improvisation, modifying the lyrics to suit the venue. It really shows the musicianship and expertise of the group. A friend told me this was the best live act he’d ever seen.

Amber, their song "Kids From Philly" is mostly a sax solo. edit - Thanks to John Lee Hooker (blues artist) for the original House Rent Boogie/One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer. George added a lot of words and instrumentation to both. It's the two songs merged together!!

This was a combination of two classic John Lee Hooker songs, "The House Rent Blues" and (of course), "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer." Lonesome George was always paying homage to the classic bluesmen. Payin' his dues. I saw George at a little theater in Albany NY in the 1980’s. Let me tell you hearing him live was amazing! The minute he hit the first note the whole place was on their feet and in the isles going nuts. I’m 64 years old and I’ve seen a lot of concerts and I wasn’t expecting this one to end up being the best time I’ve ever had. The place was so rocking he played way over to the point the theater started flashing the lights to get him to stop. P.S. You guys are great!

First time I saw these guys was in 1973. They were known as George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers back then. It was at the notorious on-campus bar at the University of Massachusetts called The Blue Wall; about which was said on the typical weekend, more beer was consumed there than anywhere else in New England. They really ripped the joint up!

I love Thorogood. He does play quite a few covers, and this is actually two covers in one. "House Rent Boogie" was a John Lee Hooker tune, and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer" was written by Rudy Tooms and originally recorded by Amos Milburn (1953) before being adapted by John Lee Hooker (1966) into essentially the song that George performs here. Another great song of Thorogood's -- not a hit, but so much fun -- is "You Talk Too Much." His hits include "I Drink Alone," great covers of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?," and Hank Williams' "Move It on Over."

You need to follow up with "Bad to the Bone", "I Drink Alone", and "Move it on Over". Because of my job, my wife is always in bed and sleeping when it is time for me to retire. Sure enough, our dog is already comfortably asleep up on the pillows on my side of the bed. No lie, when I'm ready to go to sleep I literally step into bed and tell our dog "move it on over, big dog moving in". Hahahaha. BTW saw George live at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC. This song was written by Rudy Toombs and recorded by Amos Milborn in 1953 and titled "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer." It was a hit on the R&B stations and was eventually rerecorded by John Lee Hooker in 1966. Hooker changed the title to what we know today and altered the lyrics and melody to closer resemble those Thorogood sings. Hooker's version also gives the song a definite rock and roll flavor as opposed to its original intended blues. No mention is made of the land lady from Hooker, though.

If you guys have paid attention to the fact that I almost never recommend live versions. This one however would have been one that should have been the live version. I saw him live a long time ago and he played forever. Check out "Move It On Over" and "Who Do You Love?".

Saw George in fl. And he had a guest in the audience. It was Dion the people loved it. He always has a warning about drinking and driving.

Saw George live in the early 90s. Absolutely killed it! Move It On Over is a great Hank Williams cover. Check it out!

The whole first album is great and worth a listen. It sounds like they recorded the album LIVE in the studio. We have to give credit to the Bass player and the Drummer, keeping it tight.

That LP was recorded without a bass player… just lead and rhythm guitars and the drum. Bass was dubbed in later. They’ve recently reissued a version without the bass so you can hear what it sounded like; I prefer the one with the bass, but it’s a fun alternative version.

From his official site April 11: "With great sadness, we must announce the cancellation of our Canadian & U.S. tour dates from April 27, 2023 through May 21, 2023. George has been diagnosed with a very serious medical condition that will require immediate surgery and quite a few weeks of recouperation and healing. You, our fans, mean the world to us, and we know this news is not want you wanted to hear, but rest assured George Thorogood & The Destroyers will be back. We’ll keep you updated as we know more."

I doubt anyone would react to Alice’s Restaurant. I remember it used to be a staple on WNEW in NYC to play it every Thanksgiving. What are you in for? Littering. And everyone would move away.
