I went to see them at the O2 in London last October. Those 41 years rolled away like Avalon mist on a summer's day, and there I was watching Bryan Ferry sing More Than This. What an amazing experience, never thought it would happen. I've seen Genesis and Elton and Peter Gabriel in the last year or so and you know, it's just possible Roxy was the best, in their understated way.

Please, I was 17 and dancing the night away in Barons nightclub. The 80’s was the greatest period for New Romantics and boy were Roxy music at the top of their game. I just wished there was a revival of that era. Such a great time for us kids born in the mid 60;s to early 70’s. TrueType was the happiest time of my life.

Bryan Ferry is the only Englishman more suave than James Bond. 😊 I cannot recommend enough his song, "Slave To Love" from Bryan Ferry's highly successful solo album, 'Boys and Girls'. And it's fair to say there is as much melancholy and yearning in his music as there is romance. Btw, he just celebrated his 78th birthday. 🎉

The film 'Skyfall' implies that Bond is Scottish. Not that it matters. David Niven was called "archetypically English". But he had a Scottish name and was born in Scotland to a Scottish father and a French mother. Then again there is Ian Anderson.

So good you reacted to this great New Romantic/New Wave song, and on WLIR Day! WLIR 92.7 FM was a radio station with a slogan that fit perfectly with the music they played, DARE TO BE DIFFERENT. WLIR changed their format in the early 80's & started playing New Wave music. My fav song by Roxy Music is "Love Is the Drug" released in the 70's. There are some prominent 80's New Wave bands that you never reacted to yet, namely XTC, Psychedelic Furs, Echo & the Bunnymen, and Siouxsie & the Banshees

You guys have done the (admittedly awesome) smooth side of Roxy Music. You would definitely dig their more rocking side, too- instances where drummer Paul Thompson and guitarist Phil Manzanera have a chance to flex their musicianly muscles- "Street Life", "Editions Of You", "The Thrill Of It All", "Mother Of Pearl", "Love Is The Drug", "Virginia Plain, "Beauty Queen", "Grey Lagoons", etc. Both sides of the band were major influences on the new wave/ "new romantic" bands that came out of the UK in the early 80s. And yeah, they don't come any smoother than Roxy vocalist Bryan Ferry (who has had a pretty extensive solo career as well).

Oh, I looooove this song! OK, in fairness, I love a lot of Roxy Music's songs. 😄 But this one in particular brings back memories. I'd just finished college, didn't know what I was going to do with my life, wasn't in a relationship, and well, just felt a little frantic inside. My family and I were in Maine that summer and I remember listening to a mixed tape on my Walkman as I walked along the beach. I walked out to the end of jetty and sat down on the rocks to watch the ocean do it's thing. And this song came on. It's one of those times in life where you just feel all your senses connecting to the moment at hand and a calm waves over you as gently as Ferry's voice is in this song. I just got this incredible sense that things were going to come together and be OK if I just accepted what came my way. I'll never forget that. They did, happily, and even now, LOTS of years later, this song brings back that very special moment in my life and takes me there again. Thank you for this lovely journey of rememberance. ❤

Lyrics: [Verse 1] I could feel at the time There was no way of knowing Fallen leaves in the night Who can say where they're blowing? As free as the wind Hopefully learning Why the sea on the tide Has no way of turning [Chorus] More than this You know there's nothing More than this Tell me one thing More than this Ooh, there's nothing [Verse 2] It was fun for a while There was no way of knowing Like a dream in the night Who can say where we're going? No care in the world Maybe I'm learning Why the sea on the tide Has no way of turning [Chorus] More than this You know there's nothing More than this Tell me one thing More than this No, there's nothing More than this Nothing More than this More than this Nothing

The early Roxy albums are nothing like the later ones. Between ' Manifesto ' and ' Flesh and Blood ' it was as if they changed to Roxy 2.0 They later ones are good , but .......... the first 3 albums were extraordinary , experimental and unique works of art. Most people who have only heard the hits off Avalon and Flesh and Blood would be shocked by the original Roxy.

Bryan Ferry has a voice that can do what no other singer's can and that's to make you cry because you want to go to that world where the voice comes from, a world of complete peace and love, but you know you never can. I think that's especially true for the his song Zamba. His voice is so soft an airy yet so full of emotion. Yes Roxy Music has some different styles. The earlier albums influenced the punk and new wave genres, the later are more of what you heard here with Ferry's silky voice. Biggest Hits Roxy Music: Virginia Plain, Love Is The Drug, My Only Love, Dance Away, Oh Yeah. Bryan Ferry: Let's Stick Together, Slave To Love, Don't Stop The Dance.

Love is the Drug needs to be your next one so that you get to hear their cool side. A few more of my favorites are their cover of John Lennon’s Jealous Guy, Take a Chance With Me, To Turn You On, Dance Away, Same Old Scene, and Oh Yeah. Bryan Ferry also had a successful solo career. You might want to start with Slave to Love or Kiss and Tell.

One of the most perfect and beautiful albums ever recorded, as were Ferry's immediate follow up records. Darkly lit, endlessly sad and romantic. Phil Manzanera's lovely, melancholic little five note solo/goodbye lick (around 5:44, your video time) breaks my heart every time I hear it. So many guitarists could benefit from studying how much emotion and musicality can be expressed in so few notes. Slick record for sure, but I think it is deeper than that. Listening to the entire Avalon album is like tripping through a street-lit night just as dusk is breaking into something darker and anticipating meeting the love of your life. I have a lot of favourite albums, but Avalon is the one that always makes me fall in love with the city again, even with all of its enthralling illusions and broken promises.

Awesome :) Roxy Music is one of my 2 or 3 favorite bands. “Love Is The Drug” is their US rock hit-they were huge in the UK, cult following here. For the next smooth one, “Jealous Guy” (John Lennon song). It’s beautifully heartbreaking. Amber’s right, Bryan Ferry has that sad role down pat.

When I was in high school back in the 80s, Avalon was my favourite Roxy Music song. Now that I'm in my late 50s, I much prefer this song. Just that whole sense of impermanence and going where life takes you because all you really have is the present and there is "nothing more than this".

They started in the 70’s as a much more radical band. Both them and David Bowie invented Glam Rock. Their early stuff is very different and kind of disturbing. One of their tunes is about an inflatable sex doll! Their first four albums were ground breaking. They changed rock/pop music. As a good example is the track “Mother of Pearl”. You’ve been warned it’s “different”
