Brett Michaels wrote this song while staying at his parents over Christmas. He found out that his bodyguard and close friend Kimo (who is in the Every Rose Has Its Thorn video) had passed away. He wrote this song. Verse one is about the televangelist Jimmy Baker in the 80's, the second verse is about his uncle. For the part about Kimo, he didn't know that they were going to show pictures of Kimo. You might have noticed that he had to stop lip synching because he was tearing up. The lyrics are all factual. Brett Michaels and Poison are more than just a party band. There lyrics to many songs are about life's experiences. Check out songs like Life Loves A Tragedy, Let It Play, Cry Tough, Theatre of the Soul and Stand. Many people also don't know the humanitarian work done by these guys too.

Here is the thing about Poison- they knew how to party but they were the only band that put out SINGLES every album that had a serious message - no other hard rock 80s bands would risk their careers by doing that- "I won't forget you" written about loss through drugs and overdose, "Fallen Angel" tackled Hollywood prostitution (casting couch) and rape way before Weinstein, "Something to Believe In" tackles Vietnam, Suicide, homelessness and Protestant Ministers theft, "Life Goes on" tackles murder in the industry, while "Stand" was a song spiritual awakening- Sorry, Poison outperformed, outplayed, out wrote, outperformed and out charted most 80s bands for a reason. They were full of talent. Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Def Leppard never put it on the line- they kept everything generally skin deep. Hats off to Poison, especially for Something to believe in- going after Vietnam and Suicide in the '80s and early '90s was not a hot topic- everybody wanted to party and Poison said- no- we need to stop and remember. Always respected this band for this song.

I am 60 years old and was just a kid when Nam happened, but I had so many members of my family serve in wars. From WWII to Vietnam. Being the youngest I have seen 80% of those family members laid to rest now. With every one of them I shed tiers of joyous sadness because finally the memories for them were finally over.

My daddy was in Vietnam and he hardly ever talked about it. He did start to open up a little bit before he died and he told me of a time that he and two friends came back in country to California and my dad was the only one in civilian clothes so the others had to wait in the bathroom (basically hide) while Dad went and bought them regular clothes because they knew if they walked around in uniform, it could cause problems. Dad had horrible nightmares but never once did I hear him say he wished he hadn't gone because he had been drafted and he loved his country. Miss you Dad

This is my absolute favorite Poison song, I feel like it never got the attention it deserved on the charts. Btw Bret Michaels is one of the nicest people I've ever met. Saw him outside a show in a small bar in Nashville on his solo Freedom of Sound Tour. He was so nice to chat with my then husband and I before the show, then invited all 100+ people out to his bus after the show to sign autographs.

Obviously because of the story, but also because of Bret crying in the video when he's singing the line when he lost his friend on Christmas Eve 😢😭 I still cry sometimes to this song But I also think that everyone can relate to this song in their own way, because everyone needs something to believe in. 🎸 Have a great day to everyone who reads this comment. Honoring vets during their show with a local veteran honored before they did this song. So much respect for them after seeing them live. CC is the real deal, that dude can play with the best!!! And Bret's voice has aged extremely well. Still powerful, solid range and in control after all these years.

My dad did 3 tours(4 yrs) in Viet Nam, was wounded in combat(Purple heart)and chose to stay with his guys. I've never talked w him about it but I grew up with living through what he had to deal with. My mom had so much to put up with as well. I want to send him this song but I don't want to strike up his past. He's a proud Marine. I served(USAF)but never did what my dad did. Thankful for the way he brought me up!

I'm 54, so Poison is from my generation. Ever since the 80's heavy metal has been one of my 2 favorite music genres. Hair metal got me into metal, and I have moved onto more extreme versions like goth, black, and death. Us headbangers tend to put down the hair bands. Thank you for reminding me where it all started. It was groups like Poison that made hair metal rule the 80's. I caught them on the Ratt Poison tour where they were opening for Ratt. Ratt was the big name at the time but part way into their act, the audience started chanting for Poison to come back out. HAve you listened to their "Ride the Wind." Everyime the Army moved me, this was the song I'd start the trip with.

The song always makes me cry my eyes out. It wasn't Christmas Eve when I got the news and it wasn't Christmas Eve when it happened rather it was 4th of July weekend couple years ago but one of my best friends took his own life (he had served in the Navy and when he came home he was messed up in the head and got hooked on drugs real bad. I mean real bad drugs.) and every time I hear this song now it hits that much harder. Thank you ❤️ thank you for being amazing people and giving a lot of us about 10 minutes or so at a time a chance to just forget the world for a minute and listen to some great music together. Peace

Everything you ever wanted to know about this song: The whole road crew was like a family by the time they finished touring for the second album "Open Up and Say... Ahh". Kimo, Poison's bodyguard, like all the other members of the crew had gotten heavy into drugs, alcohol, and women. Over the months that their third album, "Flesh & Blood" was being recorded, Kimo's health got consistantly worse. One day in late December of 1990, he died all alone in his Palm Springs hotel room. When Bret got the call on Christmas Eve, he went into hysterics. He locked himself in his room and didn't come out until this song was finished. It tells not only the life story of Kimo, but of Bret's cousin Bob who was wounded in Vietnam. The video for the song is equally as powerful. When Bret saw the image of Kimo on the screen, he lost his compsure and had to leave the set for several hours before coming back to finish his part. The video got 1st place in MTV's "World Series of Video" Peoples Choice Awards.

This song came out when I was moving into a whole new territory of life. Kid to young adult. My best friends dad had just passed away from cancer and my parents would be divorced in a few months. It was pretty traumatic for my tender brain and soul. Life changed big time. And I have a memory of my brothers and my family friends sitting around watching this video on MTV after their dads funeral. Moments you just don't forget.

My dad was a Naval Aviator for 27 years, with 3 tours in Viet Nam (2 as an attack pilot). I remember him coming home from one tour, landing in San Francisco. I went with my mother to pick him up at the airport. As we were walking in the airport (my dad in his dress white officer uniform), protesters were spitting on him and yelling "baby killer" and other things at him. My dad walked with his head high, with his arms around me and my mom. He didn't say a word, just kept walking. I was never prouder than at that moment. RIP dad, my hero.

I'm old enough to remember how our soldiers were treated when they returned from Vietnam. I was raised by WWII veterans (my grandmother and her brother), so I have a connection to "our boys", and it started very early in my life. At the time, I couldn't understand why "our boys" were treated like they were coming back from Vietnam. I saw the protests on the news, I saw people waiting at the airports spitting on them, calling them all sorts of vile names, and coming from that "World War II" family, I couldn't reconcile what was going on. I mean, I was still in single digits in age, and didn't understand it all. It would be many years before I learned more about what happened over there. I have friends who were there, and they also won't talk about it. I have a couple of friends who refused to go, because they were THAT against that conflict. It's not that they were "cowards", but they knew more about what was going on than many parts of the general public. I'm an "early Gen-Xer".... I was born in February 1967. So Vietnam being on the news every night was part of my early childhood. Even the stuff we were shown was disturbing. Learning more about it later in life did help to explain things, but given what "our boys" had to deal with over there, it's no wonder many of them cracked. Edit: Also, the line "Sometimes I wish to God I didn't know now, things I didn't know then." really hits me hard. As someone who has been widowed (my first wife died of cancer in 2006), that line really hits hard. It's a perfect line about PTSD, which covers many different types of mental trauma.

If you're wanting to get to a harder Poison song, you have to try the title track from their very first album, the song they still use to open every concert, "Look What the Cat Dragged In." I've seen them in concert eight time dating back to 1991, and this was their opening song every single time. It was never released as a single, but God only knows why. It's the heaviest song I can remember from them, and my all time favorite. Or you might want to go with my second favorite song of theirs, "Fallen Angel." Others have mentioned "Every Rose has it's Thorn." It is definitely a pure power ballad and their only song to go all the way to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

For those who were there...the 90's music club scene...the touring cover bands...our memories...we knew the end was coming, we knew the music was changing. We listened , to remember those times, to value our past, to sing along. Some of us did take the high road, while others took the low road. For us it was looking for that break, that moment in time that would forever change our lives. Today we are still lost, we are still searching.

The lyrics are great from start to finish but "22 years of mental tears cries a suicidal Vietnam vet, who fought a losing war on a foreign shore to find his country didn't want him back" is probably my favorite line in the entire song. Hits me like a punch to the gut every single time. Just absolutely phenomenal songwriting

I love the Gretch Chet Atkins country gentleman guitar that CC DeVille is playing in the video. Great instrument for soulful sounds.

I love this track, and the real hurt Brett felt when writing this really hits home. I think you should react to Poison's "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" next. I'd also really love you to react to Gary Moore doing "Parisienne Walkways Live." The guitar in it from one of the greatest is truly stunning. Something for female Friday would be Marianne Faithfull doing "Witches' Song" or "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan"

I'm from the Hair Band era... this song is my all time favorite... just listen to the dang lyrics.. the music... its amazing... and still gives me chills every time.. My brother-in- committed suicide and my bf Dad also.. Vietnam messed them up. War is just a horrible thing.. even though we praise our military now.. what our Vietnam veterans went through is disgusting to me.. like in the song.. a time I don't remember but a war they can't forget.. my Uncles were there.. never talk about it.

As a wounded combat vet(USAF/desert storm 1990)and who lost a couple buddies of mine during that conflict, this song always sheds many tears down my face…I’m not one to cry or feel sadness, but war does things to you, sadly.😞God bless the USA🇺🇸🇺🇸

I had a cousin that did 3 tours in Nam. I was just a very young child, about 5, and he was 18 when he did his first tour. I loved him so very much! I remember he woke me up to tell me goodbye on the morning he had to fly out and although I didn’t know where he was going or why, I cried and begged him not to go. He would never talk about that war and no one dared ask him. Dang! I’m crying right now, it’s such an emotional thing, knowing they were wronged in so many ways when they returned. Some of those boys got addicted to drugs while they were over there and others got addicted to drugs and alcohol when they came home: some of it from the atrocities they saw(and had to commit) while they were over there and some of it from the way they were treated when they returned home. It was a horrific war and they went to do what Uncle Sam told them they had to do. They were all super heroes and were ostracized when they stepped foot back on American soil. So damned sad. My son was in the USMC, he went to Fallujah, Iraq when he was 18 and I died a hundred times over while he was there, praying day and night that he made it home safely. Of course, there was a ticker tape parade when they returned home and I’m so thankful they weren’t treated like the poor boys that fought in Vietnam. To anyone out there that has served their country in any capacity, you have my eternal thanks and GOD BLESS YOU ALL TENFOLD! GOD BLESS AMERICA! 🇱🇷

In the 1980s, the vets were finally welcomed home in NYC. There is a beautiful wall on Water Street. There was a big ass parade. They were treated like the heros that they were. Still today, I thank anyone wearing a military hat for their service. Sometimes I get thanked back for recognizing them. It's sad. They all should be recognized.

This song was very personal to Bret Michaels. In the scene where he has screens around him in the video you can actually see his choke up if you pay attention. It is during the part where he sings "My best friend died a lonely man".......and when he sing "fades again you can see his mouth stopped moving cause he was choked up. He did not know when the music video was done that they were going to put pics of someone he loved who had passed away, they did that to get a real reaction, and they succeeded. This is a beautiful song
