When I was in high school this was played at every single dance. Homecoming, Sadie Hawkins, Prom, all of them. And every girl that wore red would feel like this song was playing just for them. I remember at Prom 1995, my date wore a dress, and I whispered to her "the lady in red IS dancing with me...cheek to cheek."

"Don't Pay the Ferryman" is a great story song. I've always liked reading the tales of the Greek and Roman myths and this tale of a trip across the river Styx is a banger. It's on my list of songs to exercise to, especially on a power walk.

The real life love story of this song took a hit in the mid-'90s when de Burgh revealed that he had an affair with the 19 year old nanny he employed while his wife was recovering from a horseback riding accident. After some public contrition, with de Burgh saying "I don't want to gamble with my marriage and my family," he and Diane remained together. things are never as they seem {:-) PAV UK

I ❤his more recent cover of Turn, Turn, Turn is fabulous (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eayfZZiHmbCllnk.html). I love "Transmission Ends", "The Tower" (makes me cry), "This Silent World", "Flying Home", "Waiting for the Hurricane", "This Waiting Heart" and of course "A Spaceman Came Travelling" (at Christmas). I have played "Where Peaceful Waters Flow" on guitar myself for so many years. I sang it with two lifelong friends as a sort of goodbye just before we all left university - Crusader as well (on 12 string guitar). So many fabulous songs. I love his story songs like "Spanish Train", "Patricia the Stripper" and love the quieter songs like "if you really love her let her go". Can you tell I'm a fan 🥰

Oh you've opened such a can of worms with Chris DeBurgh. Living in Canada, he was quite big...not to mention how huge he was in Europe. So many great songs...I can't list them all here. Been putting out albums for almost 50 years now. A lot of his songs are stories, and he's the Bard...or the story teller. I've seen him 4 times in concert, and he remains the only artist I've ever seen to admit to the audience that he messed up a song. He would bounce around that stage...so full of energy. I remember him doing a full concert even though he had injured his back (he apologized to the crowd). He did the concert either sitting at his piano, or standing...and holding onto the piano. He didn't miss a beat. I always say that I'd love to meet him in person.

In 1984 there was a movie made titled "The Woman in Red" starring Gene Wilder and Kelly Lebrock and Gilda Radner. Though the movies name is different from the hit song by Chris De Burgh. The movie is remembered most from this hit song. The song in the film that won the Academy Award for best song in a movie was Stevie Wonder's "I just Called to Say I Love You." Just a little trivia.

Chris D' BERG is how you say it. I've always loved CdeB - not so much for this song, but he's known as a storyteller, a boulevardier, a historian. This was a big hit but many of his fans love songs like 'Spanish Train', 'Waiting For the Hurricane', 'Crusader', a massive high tempo trip to the underworld with 'Don't Pay The Ferryman', a foot-stomping anthem with 'High On Emotion' - and one you must do at Christmas, 'A Spaceman Came Travelling'. (Your British listeners will be tired of it because it's in every supermarket for a month.) I've seen him in concert four or five times, the last one just a few months ago when at the age of 74 he did a one-man show of all his hits and kept his audience spellbound. Back in 2019 I saw him at the Royal Albert Hall. When it came to 'Lady In Red' he walked off the stage and toured round the ground level, singing occasionally, hugging and chatting with his audience. A real crowd-pleaser. And of course for those who've been there, the RAH is very red. I'll always think of it as Chris's Grand Old Lady In Red. I vote for 'Spanish Train' next!

We were spoilt with these smooth ballads for the last dance in the prom and disco in the 80s. Esp in the mid 80s. This one, Phyllis Nelson - Move Closer, Jennifer Rush - Power of love, Bangles - Eternal flame, Atlantic Starr - Always, Spandau Ballet - True, etc etc... don't get these type of soft dance ballads anymore. The 80s do leave us with timeless songs.

As he was my first music artist it’s been my lifelong challenge to collect all his output. Love him and his music. Too many gems. My sister gifted me two tickets for his concert when he came through town so I’m am super grateful that I’ve seen him live now too. At the concert many of the women wore red. When they played this song CdB left the stage and worked his way through the audience singing to as many of the ladies in red as he could. Special memories.

What else from them to listen to? Gosh, that is hard to say. This was arguably his biggest hit. His early music was story based and where he made a name for himself at first but it’s hard for me to say what would make a good listen now. Mid 80s he started going for more pop songs and radio friendly stuff (like this). “Don’t Pay the Ferryman” was also pretty big. Or “High on Emotion” too - I remember hearing those songs on the radio a lot back then… Personally I’d suggest “For Rosanna” for RSR to listen to. I think it will be sweet for them and touch them too.

Yes. This was everyone's favorite. A film song. You want to be dancing when you hear this song. Everyone would sing it while they walked down the halls at school.

"Lonely Sky" was his first top 5 hit in South Africa. Loved it, so rushed to go and buy the album "Spanish Train and other stories". A month or two later, several other songs from the album got radio play, but then the album was banned in SA because of the song "Spanish Train" in which he tells the "story" of the Devil and God playing cards to win the souls of the dead. His first few albums were filled with beautiful stories of castles and princes, like folklore. Lady in Red was released years later and was his biggest commercial success. However, I still prefer his earlier work. "A spaceman came traveling" is still one of the most popular Xmas songs listened to today. I've seen Chris de Burgh live several times and he sounds as good live as on his albums. He is a VERY imaginative singer/songwriter.

Chris De Burgh is a British singer/songwriter who now lives in Ireland and has a huge catalogue of songs to his name. There are so many good ones, and all quite diverse, that it's difficult to recommend just one of them to you. As others have mentioned, 'Don't Pay the Ferryman' is a very good one and at Christmastime you should listen to his Christmas hit 'A Spaceman Came Travelling'. Don't worry about becoming softer, Jay, it's a good thing. It was reported that Chris De Burgh wrote this song about his wife when he saw her in a red dress and realised how beautiful she was and how much he loved her - I don't know how true this is, but it's a lovely story 😊

THANK YOU FOR REVIEWING THIS!!! After John Denver Chris de Burgh (the last part of his name is pronounced as "Berg") is my all time favorite singer songwriter. Lady In Red was an international hit. Others to explore are High On Emotion, Don't Pay the Ferryman and Say Goodbye To It All. But the best version of that sing is the live version. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qpqjnbFqvNrZlWw.html I can recommend so many more songs of his! Love of the Heart Divine, So Beautiful, Missing You, Candlestick, Big City Sundays. I'll stop there for now.

A friend of mine said when this was popular she'd stop what she was doing, close her eyes, and dream that someone would hold her in such high esteem. I loved that comment, and this song is so romantic. (We were in our 30s back then.)

Just remember that there are only 3 genres in music... Music that you like, Music that you don't like, and music that you just can't understand how anyone can't love... or can love... 😏 I think Jay is starting to get that, in that he's really getting to enjoy the soft side (because much of it is great), but I'm certain he'll always love what he loves... too.

Chris De Burgh (pronounced D'Burgh). His daughter won Miss World in 2003. You picked probably his most cheesy song of all. Don't Pay The Ferry Man is a banger. If you want a big of a giggle listen to his Patricia The Stripper. Very funny song. Catchy too. But Ferryman is definitely the song to hear next. Then Spanish Train, eerie but brilliant. Lonely Sky, another banger. Borderline also worth a listen. And of course his Christmas classic, A Spaceman Came Travelling

Chris de BURGH is what is known as a Marmite rock star .You either love him or hate him and this song is one of the reason people don't like him .If they only took the time to check out songs like Don't Pay The Ferryman or High on Emotion or 50 other great songs he has written they would change their minds .I saw him as the first of three acts -headliners Supertramp - and he was amazing .Just him and a 12 string guitar.

End of June 1977, at the Montreal Forum (17,000 fans)... Chris De Burgh is the opening act of Supertramp! The lights go out! A spotlight shines over a lonely barstool on stage... out walks this guy with a guitar... now I'm thinking "This guy better be good!" Then he starts singing "Spanish Train!!! Wow!!! A love story between artist and city started right there, in front of us!!! I've been asking you guys for a year now to hear "Spanish train" and "Patricia The Stripper"... storytelling at it's best!!
