So glad you finally heard this. The meaning isn’t as creepy as it sounds. The lead singer (I forget his name) was dating a girl. Over time she was losing interest, but stayed with him because he had a car and could take her places. He didn’t care, thinking he could woo her back. Eventually he ran out of patience, exclaiming “I’m just your vehicle”, and they broke up. Eventually they got back together and have been married for over 40 years.

Due to the distinctive horn riffs, Ides of March, were often mistaken for Blood Sweat and Tears. This song is about a girl who used a man for transportation, when he realizes it's more than about the ride. Lol Fantastic band with just a great melody, sensational vocals and the horns that take over the the front position. Great memory. Knew you'd love it. Great reaction. Blood, Sweat & Tears (BS&T) and Chicago both released their albums through Columbia Records. The Ides of March were signed to Warner Brothers. Record companies were important then because they were the main "vehicle" to distribute records for sale. Columbia, under Clive Davis, was the strongest label in rock & roll in the 1960's and 1970's. EMI/Capitol released more records by headline acts such as the Beatles and the Beach Boys although its "artist lineup" was not as deep or as strong as Columbia. Motown (Black Contemporary Blues & Soul) had a powerful lineup of artists that charted high in the mainstream Billboard 100 listing. Then came Warner Brothers and other important labels of the times such as Atlantic (Blues & Soul), and Stax Records out of Memphis (R&B). Epic Records charted a variety of acts well into the 2000's. ABC records was important due to Ray Charles. Chess Records in Chicago was not as strong in the mainstream Billboard 100 but it was an important root of basic blues artists. The Ides of March were signed by Warner Brothers to compete with BS&T and Chicago on Columbia.

The lead singer of rhe Ides of March is Jim Peterick, he was also involved with the groups Survivor and 38 Special. They are a Chicago area band, they still perform locally. Jim still has his trademark purple hair , I met him 3 years ago. He cowrote the hot " The eye of the Tiger" , a monster hit. Other notable groups from Chicago are The Buckinghams, whose songs “Kind of a Drag”, “Susan”, “Hey Baby”, “Don’t you Care” and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy”, are worthy of your reactions. I suggested this song a year ago. Jim Peterik, lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter, is a hit maker. This song hit #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was their only top 40 hit. Jim went on to create Survivor where he played keyboards and cowrote nearly all their hits including Eye of The Tiger from the movie Rocky III. He also wrote many of the early hits for 38 Special. The number of hits Jim wrote is unbelievable. He has the golden touch!

This was written by Jim Peterik, who was the group's guitar player and lead singer. He told Songfacts how it came together: "On April 9, 1968 while I was waiting to see one of my favorite groups, The Turtles, at Riverside Brookfield High School in the Chicago Suburb of Riverside, my eyes wandered to the girl standing in front of me - she was a vision in knee socks and orange culottes - long silky hair and huge blue eyes. As I was trying to screw up the courage to say hello, she turned to me and said, 'Aren't you Peterik?' Turns out she had seen the Ides Of March a month previously when we opened for the New Colony Six at Morton West High School. I said, 'Yeah,' and from there the conversation just seemed to flow. Never had I met a girl I had so much in common with. Karen and I sat together at the show, and by 'Happy Together' she had placed her leg on top of mine (a very positive sign for a first date). After about six months of great dates, good times, meadows, making out and serenades, Karen informed me that it was over between us, that she wanted to 'See other people." I was thoroughly heartbroken. I spent the next few months writing sad songs, depressive melodies, introspective garbage, and forcing the Ides to do long Blues jams for our show encores (as the audience streamed out of the Grand Ballroom at State Pier). I was also on a mission to find another Karen. There was a girl who looked a lot like her, but when we started dating, I realized that personality was 9/10's of the law. I guess I had to somehow win her back! One day I got a call from Karen. My heart jumped into my throat. She asked me if I could drive her to modeling school (she knew I had a pristine white '64 Valiant with mag wheel covers). Instead of playing it cool, I found myself saying, 'I'll be right over.' I figured our proximity would remind her how much she really loved me. It was great riding next to her again, though I had to make sure I controlled my hands and my heart. This pattern continued for a few weeks with Karen asking me to drive her to various appointments and functions. We even sang at a few coffee houses as a duo (we called ourselves "Genesis" predating the famous group by about three years). Though it was great to be with her, the newly platonic nature of our relationship was bummin' me out. One day in a fit of frustration, I heard myself blurt out to her 'You know, all I am to you is your Vehicle' (The word baby was added later). Just then the light bulb popped up on top of my head and I thought about all the guys like me who don't mind being taken for a ride by a beautiful girl. I said 'See you later' and started writing the song." (Songfacts.com)

Finally, many of us have wanted you guys to react to this song ever since we learned Amber liked horns. This is the ultimate horn song from an age (early 70's) when horn bands were all the rage. Jim Peterik was the front man for this band singing lead and playing lead guitar, as well as writing or co-writing most of their songs. After leaving the Ides of March he wrote and sang in radio and TV commercials for a few years before starting his next band. The next band was "Survivor" and they went on to have many hits with their most famous song being "Eye of the Tiger" from the Rocky movies. Other Ides of March songs you might like are "You Wouldn't Listen", "Superman", and "L.A. Goodbye."

The story is they were students at a west suburban Chicago high school when the band formed. (Chicago bands were famous for their horns.) True or not, it was said they wore wigs because the school didn't allow long hair. When this came out they were out of high school. The lead singer, Jim Peterik, wrote songs that were hits by other artists and was later in the group Survivor. He co-wrote Eye of the Tiger and co-wrote the title song for Rocky IV. The group's second song, L.A. Goodbye only charted at 73 nationally. It did a lot better in the midwest and was #1 in a number of midwest cities. It was said the problem with the song was it was nothing like Vehicle and was almost Crosby, Stills, and Nash-like. The Buckinghams was another Chicago band that used horns and had a number of hits. Great song, enjoyed your comments.....the lead singer was Jim Peterik and very amazingly....the band is still together with all its original members. Jim Peterik did leave the band for a period of time to form the band Survivor, which eventually scored the big hit...Eye of the Tiger from the Rocky III film. Eventually Ides of March reformed and have been together ever since with all original members, celebrating their 55th anniversary together in 2019. The story behind the song as I gathered from an interview that I listened too......was written tongue in cheek about a girl he dated for a few. It seems after a few months together, she dumped him, but continued to ask him for rides from 1 place to another. After a bit...Jim's remark was "All I am to you is your vehicle"...and...a hit record was born. Before the knew it...they were touring with the likes of Janis Joplin and Led Zeppelin. By the way...there is a happy ending to the real life story: Peterik and the girl got back together and were eventually married..... Ahhhh....the power of music...(lol)

This song was so big back then. Horns helped rock move into soul and funk. The fusion of styles was so much fun in the later 60's and early 70's. You should try Jr. Walker and the Allstars. I'm sure you'll appreciate his sax playing. Start off with What Does It Take To Win Your Love. I love your reactions!!!

The best part of the lyric is that if you want to be a star I'll take you to Hollywood, but if you just want to stay the way you are, I think you should. I think that's one of the coolest statements ever in a rock lyric.

Love the horn section of Vehicle: Beep! Beep! Beep! Ides of March was a one hit wonder in terms of top 40. They were often confused with Blood Sweat & Tears. You should check out Chase for another horn-filled song Get It On. You’ll love it.

One of the greatest bands to come out of Chicago. My father rip. Sold these guys and all the Chicago bands of the 60’s. He’s was their go to guy. The singer went on to form survivor with hit song eye of the tiger. Awesome video guys hope to see more Chicago bands on here! God bless

Such a banger classic. Gotta tell you that I so appreciate the digital era because this song in the 70s, at least what I heard, was so low volume and out of phase, but these crisp remasters let you hear it the way it was intended. One complaint. I am a Patreon follower and I absolutely love you both. But you all gotta habit (especially you Mama lol) of stopping songs right before they're done. I appreciate your enthusiasm but just let the song end before you express yourselves 😂😂😂. Otherwise carry on fam! 🥰💯👍🏾

My first year in high school jazz band (1996, trumpet player) we played this, and it's been in my head ever since. I, like many people, always thought it was a Blood, Sweat, & Tears song... probably because of those excellent horns.

Peterik wrote "Vehicle" as a tongue-in-cheek joke, having been initially inspired by anti-drug pamphlets passed out to high-schoolers. He expanded on the song's genesis in a piece for The Wall Street Journal: At the time, I was madly in love with this girl named Karen. I had a souped-up 1964 Plymouth Valiant, and she was always asking for rides. I drove her to modeling school every week. I was hoping flames would ignite-but they didn't. I came home one day, dejected, and thought: all I am is her vehicle. And I thought: Wow! Vehicle! I came up with this song, taught it to the band, and the next thing I knew, we were recording in a CBS studio. Peterik had an on-again/off-again relationship with the woman after the song came out, and they eventually wed.

I was in high school back in the late '80s when VH1 kind of "resurrected" the '60s and we played this in the band as a football stand tune. WE LOVED IT! Probably played it three times a game. The guitar solo was a trombone solo in the stands. This was by far my favorite stand tune! Such good times and memories!
