Zadina was touted as being the 2nd best goal scorer of that behind Svechnikov. You always go with best player available. As a Devils fan, looking back at the 2015 draft we went with positional need with Zacha, look at all the players that went after him. I'm pretty sure at pick #6, Rantanen was the best player on the table.
@Razre
@Razre Жыл бұрын
The definition of "best" is a lot deeper than the stat line, though. I think Yzerman proved this when he chose Moritz Seider over Philip Broberg, Victor Soderstrom, and even Trevor Zegras. In 2018, Detroit was starving for defense and goaltending, and Quinn Hughes was everything they wanted and needed in a top-6 (potentially franchise) D-man. Knowing this I would have to agree that it didn't make sense for Holland to pass on him. To be fair, I also think Holland's management played a big part in Zedina not reaching his potential. Really happy Yzerman came home.
@Razre
@Razre Жыл бұрын
@@dukeford8893 That's pretty much what I'm saying. You can't say Zedina is faultless, but you also can't say that Holland's system helped the team's prospects become stars, because save for Larkin who had a chance to play with the likes of Zetterberg, there was no one.

The Devils didn't draft for need when they took Zacha. If they felt they needed a Center they could have taken Barzal. In Zacha's draft year he played against McDavid in the playoffs and held him to 6 points in 5 games (McDavid had 120 points in 47 games during the season). Lou and Conte had a major hard on for big two way forwards.

I thought the Habs would pick Zadina instead of KK. My only issue is that his game, to me, looked a lot like Galchenyuk’s (which the Habs had just unloaded). Anyway, picking KK is now Carolina’s problem, on that revenge offer sheet which got them a mediocre player with a big salary. lol

As much as i enjoy dunking on Ken Holland and the Red Wings I feel like they deserve a bit of a pass on the Zadina vs Hughes pick. Zadina was the consensus number 3 pick and some even had him ahead of Svechnikov after Zadina had a great World Juniors showing. Plus Detroit could've also used some scoring too. This is bogus. Zedina was on everyone's board very high and was considered an all around steal...AT THE TIME. Blash and the Wings had a hand in him failing, but considering this year's ROTY was a Red Wing, most the "blame" is on the player. Can't even blame him. Sometimes the player just does not work out. But to call him a confused pick and bad drafting, that's pure 20/20 hindsight. I garuntee you, no one saw that fail coming. No one. And hate to point this out, but could still make a comeback. How is picking Zadina a "confusing selection"? You have no clue what you are talking about. If a consensus top 3 pick falls to number 6, every GM should pick them, unless there is so serious concern that management knows, but fans don't. This year the consensus number 1 pick fell to 4. It's the same thing. Seattle probably had "their guy" circled, but if someone with that talent falls, you have to pick them. You're praising the Wright pick know, if Cutter Gauthier turns into an absolute gem at No. 5 and Shane Wright is a bust you're going to make the same video, but with Wright as Zadina, and Gauthier as Hughes. I bet you were praising the red wings when the pick was made, but know since he's not good you just change your mind lol.

Dude, the Habs have an entire team of very experienced hockey professionals that weighed in on this one. It is always a gamble because no one has a crystal ball. And the previous numbers are NOT an absolute certain way to reach a decision. So I say, leave it to the experts, accept their choice and move on. Time will tell.

You could use an hundred other examples of late picks that became nhl superstars for arguing the exact opposite… so we’ll just see who was right and who was wrong in a few years. This is a throw of dice. You are the kind’a guy who would have definitely pick Alexandre Daigle. I would have passed… but I had the advantage to know the guy as he was one of my friends in school.

The 1980 draft was the last time the Habs had the first overall pick and they shocked their fans by taking Doug Wickenheiser instead of local favorite and future Hall Of Fame legend Denis Savard. This year, it's very likely that history will repeat itself.

Zadina will probably never live up to his projection, but i still believe he can be a solid all-round 2-way middle 6 player. By no means is that a bust. Surprised that the 2021 surprise drafting of winger Tyler Boucher (2-1-3 in 17 NCAA games and 7-7-14 in 24 OHL games at age 19) at #10 by the Senators, one spot before center Cole Sillinger (16-15-31 in 79 NHL games at age 18) didn't make this video.

It's way too early to tell what Boucher will turn out to be, but I don't think anyone could have predicted how well Sillinger turned out so far. He is by far the latest pick I've ever seen be the first in his draft class to play in the NHL.
@LieuFang
@LieuFang Жыл бұрын
@@chengliu872 Eh, being an oversized forward who can't put up a point-per-game in the OHL in a D+1 year is cause for concern for Boucher. Point-per-game status is something that 7th round picks who turn into tweeners have achieved in their D+1. Boucher's last three years have him tracking closer to an ECHLer based on NHLe. Among his production comps, the one with the best career is Kerby Rychel. So his underlying stats and his counting stats are abysmal. Plus nobody had him projected in the top 100 picks of the draft, let alone the top 10. If Boucher is very lucky, he might see some NHL time in the bottom 6 on occasion whenever the Sens need somebody to goon it up. That's his marketable hockey skill, being overly physical. Meanwhile Sillinger is looking at the very real possibility of being the center between Gaudreau and Laine for the next several years. Boucher going one spot ahead of Sillinger is already looking super rough. *Edited out a part about where Sillinger was drafted because I realized I misread your comment, sorry.

I watched this simply for the Zadina content. I wanted to see if I believed you. You being in the Hughes camp makes me believe you aren't just looking in hindsight. There was a lot of clamoring for him even after the pick. Personally, I was in the Bouchard camp as Detroit already had people like Saarijarvi and Hicketts and needed a little more size. Also, I never saw the allure of Zadina at sixth overall. Too many of his highlights from juniors were on the perimeter or with lots of time. It didn't look like it would translate unless he committed to adding elements or changing his game. I never thought he'd be a 30- or 40-goal scorer as some at the time suggested. I didn't think 25-25-50 as a career high was out of the question because he did have some nice accuracy, but he'd have to change his game. ...Finally, Seider is said with a long I...
