Jake Guenzel was a 3rd pick of the Pens and before going down to injury he was on pace for 40 plus goals. That's with Crosby going down for like 15 games. He's an elite winger and has gotten better every year and lead the team in playoff goals (13) the last time the Pens won the stanly cup as a rookie that was called up half through the season and only played 40 games. The next year (his first full season at 82 games played only scored 22 goals 26 assist and 48 points) when they lost to the eventual Stanley Cup winners the Washington Capitals in the second round already had 10 goals at that point proving he turns it up in the playoffs. His next season he had 40 goals and this year before getting injured was tracking for somewhere between 40 to 50 goals. I wouldn't be surprised to see him win the Maurice Richard Trophy next year. For a third round pick im really surprised to not see him on this list.

Another Canuck pick that went surprisingly late in the draft was Pavel Bure. Shocking how many teams passed up on The Russian Rocket, and when he came into the NHL, I'm sure there were about 20 other GMs kicking themselves that they never picked him when they had more then one chance to, but Pat Quinn got one of the best draft steals of all time and the rest is history.

Seeing a lot of people bring up Point alongside Pasta, but I feel like 2014 is REALLY underrated in terms of the hidden talents that got lost in the later rounds. For the Flyers (hometeam) Oskar Lindblom was a fifth rounder and 4 years later he was playing one of the best lines in the league with Konecny and Couturier and with his return next season is projected to be a cornerstone piece. Which is saying a lot seeing as the rest of the teams cornerstones were all first rounders (Coots, TK, Provorov, Farabee, Frost, even Patrick if he pulls off the expect upswing on his return). The only other cornerstone that went a bit lower was Carter Hart who went in the second round, and even then he was the first goalie to be drafted his year, at 48th. Oskar went in the 140s.

As easy as it would have been to pick Kucherov as your 2011 selection, I appreciate the selection of Scheifele because Winnipeg players almost never get the respect they deserve and as someone who has watched Mark's development from day one, I wonder where the Jets would be today without the dynamic Scheifele/Wheeler combo. Of course it would have been extra sweet if the Jets had the same foresight in the second round and selected Kucherov to play alongside Scheifele.

I don't think anyone drafted in the first round is much of a surprise, they're first round picks for a reason, regardless if it's 1 or 30, even second round guys aren't a huge surprise.. I think surprises are 5th 6th and 7th round picks who turn out good to great. Just my two cents.

Joe pavelski captained sjs, us olympic team, and is an amazing playoff performer. Arguably the best tipper in the entire league

Best draft surprise: Martin St.Louis: never drafted, won Art Ross. TWICE!
@Romeo38rus
@Romeo38rus 3 жыл бұрын
You slightly mentioned Kuch like a "not a surprise" as if he wasn't selected 56th overall and then won +/- award the first full year in the league and had later become who he had become with Art Ross, Hart, multiple franchise records and even its personal "no move" dangle

At the 2019 draft I was super surprised when PoDkOLZiN fell to 10. I had him pegged as the 4th best player available. I am super excited how he'll transform the Canucks with the intensity in his game and the will to destroy on his way to the puck. I expect him to have just as much impact as Hughes did this year. He should be given every chance to succeed offensively in the top 6 and be able to challenge for the Calder when he lands in 2021-22 as a mature kid. I think he projects as a more tenacious version of Kesler. Messier-like in how he battles for the puck but not in the cheapshot loser sort of way. Actually quite the opposite in that if someone cheapshots his linemate, he's the first one into the pit like a bull with fists flying, loves to stick up for his boys. And he scores when he needs to. One day he's gonna do like Kes and carry the Canucks on his back through the playoffs towards a Stanley Cup, and I think, in his very first season.

These are all "homer" pics because i'm from Chicago but Debrincat was "too small" Saad was "uncoachable" and Shaw was drafted D+2 I believe and is a consistent NHL'er. Debrincat had down year but will be a perennial 20-30 goal scorer and Saad is an incredibly strong 2 way guy, and always shows up in play offs

It was sooooo long ago but Henrik Lundqvist was a 7th round pick, 205th overall, in 2000. In a redraft, only Marion Gaborik would be his competition for the #1 pick.

I can’t see how 2016 isn’t DeBrincat. 40 goal scorer falls to 2nd round. His production was not a fluke as the majority wasn’t with Kane.

Pavel bure with the 113th pick is the most surprising. I know the reason why but still it would have been worth wasting a first round pick just in case he decided to come over. He did and Vancouver benefited.
