In this video, I investigate the apparent location of Rochdale's long-lost castle, the structure that gave its name to nearby Castleton.

I know this area very well, I played on this hill nearly every day sixty-odd years ago. We had a tree swing and used to sledge down it in the winter and in the summer have picnics. Happy memories for me , thankyou for the very interesting little video. I remember the big house on the top and also St. Albans Church. I remember carving my initials on a big tree overlooking St. Albans Church.

@@mdatkinson92 I would love to find out as I have often thought about it. The tree was a very tall one and I presume quite old as it was well matured. Big strong branches and really quite easy to climb. Directly looking over the church. ( I can just picture it now in my mind as if it was yesterday). If it is still there I would definitely not be able to climb it now.... lol. When I come to Rochdale , hopefully in the spring when things get back to normal I will have to have a ride up there and see if it is still standing.

i'm in oldham, chadderton, and the thing this makes me think of is the attitude like 'its just oldham!, there wont be anything like that here!' i'm guilty of it, until i started developing an interest in local history, particularly chadderton, and realizing that places like foxdenton hall weren't always just a big derelict house in a park, that they had a history and Lords and ladies, among others, would have lived there, then discovering it wasn't the first hall on the site. and that it wasnt the only one in the local area. add to that finding out that vikings and anglo saxons were here, and romans. i spend a lot of time hovering over my local area on google maps and seeing things that we just see as a patch of grass but something tells me more often than not that theres more to it.

Nice one Mike I think i may have commented on this vid before mate ...very informative I was very intreged when u mention were the river roach ran at that time ...or at least where we are told it ran I know that area very well and some of the said route seems a little bit impossible ..? ...maybe the construction of the library diverted the river to some extent..? ..but we all know water doesn't usually run up hill...if you look to the side of the library (touchstones )....the river is very low in relation to distance to the bottom of castle hill..?
@mdatkinson92
@mdatkinson92 Жыл бұрын
Interesting, I'll have to go and have a proper look at that. It could be that the library diverted it, but it's also possible that the ground at that point is simply higher now due to having been built up over the years. The river certainly appears there on the old maps.

Great video. I remember a lady who was a keen local historian telling me that a castle structure once stood on the high ground above Summer Sttreet in Rochdale.. Hence the name Summer Castle. I am sure she also told me that parts of the walls still stood. Summer Street is off Molesworth Street near T.K.Max. This site would have had extensive views across the town centre. It would be interesting to research if this is accurate. Interestingly many years ago, I worked on Drake Stteet at a shop called Stewards. It was a single storey building built in front of a large Regency house which had land to the tear flanked by a stone wall with castle detailing on the top. Not far from Summer Castle it bordered River Street..it is now all demolished.

Taking a look now and Summer Castle seems to refer to an ancient mansion rather than an actual castle. Which is nonetheless fascinating and warrants further investigation. What I'm seeing so far corroborates your point about it having a great view over the town.

Excellent work and well researched. Some of the early censuses are confusing as parts of what is now clearly considered to be Rochdale were listed as Castleton. My thoughts on the pronunciation of Recedham is that it was a hard C, making it something like Reach-dam which isn't too far from the modern version. When I was young you would sometimes hear old timers say Rachdale. A road map by John Ogilby from around 1675 has the modern spelling of Rochdale and the river Roch. The `Cester` suffix has become Manchester, Lancaster and Leicester among many others. All the same but all different so I guess that you can pronounce it how you like. Have you noticed that on the early OS map Manchester Road was named Goose Lane and there was a Goose Lane House. On the Ogilby map this was Gold Lane house but he did make the occasional mistake.

How about a study into Trubb hall. there is a farm there behind the George and Dragon pub. My 4 times great grandfather used to be a smithy there. He was a Skelton. BTW I am from near there ...Marland area. I now live in Saltash, Cornwall. I am 63 and my parents are still around Marland at the ripe old age of 85. Between myself and my Mother we have a very good collection of books from the area i.e. fishwicks , Tim Bobbins. etc.

Many thanks, Steven! That's a great idea. I have been trying to trace Trub Hall for some time now, and have a couple of photographs of it. I think the best bet for actually identifying its specific location, which as far as I am aware has never been properly identified, is to use the photograph that has St. Martin's Church in the background and attempt to work out an approximate location. Do you have any info in this regard? Or anything about Cromwell's supposed stay at the George?
