Great American Road Trip 2016 Part 2
On this week's video we visit a famous roadside attraction near Chattanooga, Tennessee called Rock City. Rock city is located on the Georgia side of the border, on top of the Lookout Mountain Ridge.
Rock City became a tourist attraction back in the early 1930s, at the site of a community called Fairyland, founded by one Garnet Carter and his wife Frieda. These rock formations happened to be inside the Fairyland community, and it was Frieda’s idea to develop this part of the property into a great rock garden, with all kinds of plants, trails around the rocks, and statues of gnomes and other fairytale characters imported from Germany. They claim that you can see seven states from the top of the mountain: Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. While on a clear day you can see the Smoky Mountains, that's still the Tennessee side. I don't have hard evidence of this but I have read that Kentucky, Virginia, and South Carolina are below the horizon, so the only way you could see them is if the Earth was flat.
In Rock City we also enjoy the music of Matt Downer - Old Time Traveler, an Alabama native and Chattanooga resident. He plays the fiddle, the banjo, and the guitar, and he has dedicated his career to the preservation of traditional music. He has studied the repertoire and techniques of many of the elder Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia musicians, so he is the real deal. What a treat it is to listen to his music.
As we continue towards Nashville we run into some trouble climbing the Cumberland Plateau , also known Monteagle Mountain. The car started overheating on the long 5% grade. While technically not a mountain, Monteagle got it's popular culture name due to a Johnny Cash song describing this treacherous portion of the road.

I was a 12volt tech for Kia dealers in Florida. The Sorrento was very popular when it came out. It's amazing you are doing all this with a Kia. Really pushing that SUV. What also is impressive is you started all this during an economic breakdown and anemic growth. You said other day you started 10 years ago - yeah, people were panicked and depressed and you went traveling. That must have been with all sorts of challenges. You took lots of risks. You didn't have much to do go with and here you are in 2020 - a huge success. Success doing for a living what everyone else works mundane jobs to save enough money and vacation time to do maybe once a year if they are fortunate. Your overall attitude - I mean I can see passed all that at times also, but you do it very well. And you are motivating so many people to take action. For those who simply cannot travel you give them a great view of America - and ---- unlike most other RV youtubers, you don't make it about yourself. Obviously you are part of it, but you are not talking about the rig, and how great your life is - some youtubers, they have 2x your subscribers (currently 151k) and they are nice, but, it's as if their videos are all about - hey, look at how awesome we are, how much fun we have - checkout our $300k in truck/rv - basically they are showing off - it is kinda sad really. But you? It's nothing like that - that's why I watch all your videos every day, listen to your music every day. When you upgraded your truck, you went to the smallest pickup. These items are attainable by the average person. Ford F450 - probably most will never afford one. Airstream? Um.. as if. Who has $180k to dump on an aluminum box? You are showing people how they can enjoy the best America has to offer with humble earnings. One youtuber shows off how much he makes per month - ugh, disgusting. Stopped watching those kind. He makes more in a month than most Americans do in a year. We don't need to know that. Even at times when you probably should lose your cool, you do not. People like that a lot. I will add one piece of criticism. Dealing with your sponsors. It shows that you are trying to please them and your uncomfortable level is sometimes visible. Let me make this very clear. They need you. You do not need them. Trust me when I tell you - they will do everything to keep you. Just be yourself when you show off any product. If it is trash, say so. If it is good, say so. You owe nobody nothing. They are trying to tap into your audience - (us). Speaking for myself, if I see you uncomfortable with a product or a review, I will immediately reject that product. I think for much of your audience (I know I talk a lot) - if we see you uncomfortable, we are not gonna like whatever it is making you that way. But it was fun watching you setup that tent - lmao. Finally - your videos are the best. Doesn't matter if you are sitting outside or live chats or short unedited. Be confident when you do the RV reviews. You know what you are doing. You don't need Adam, or anyone. When you walk through, understand that we also are not experts, so we see you do probably what we would also do. Stumble your way through it - it is 100% fine. Your personality is making this channel the best channel - don't sell yourself short. Thank you again as I'm sure I speak for most when I say these videos are the best.

Grew up on Lookout Mountain about two long blocks from Rock City. My mother's childhood friend grew up in the Carter's home adjacent to the park. They've now converted the house into a wedding venue. It's very popular because of the home but mainly because of the incredible view of the valley. There are some "real" waterfalls on the back of the mountain just above a canyon. Glad you enjoyed the park. Seriously glad you enjoyed it. Most people deem it a "tourist trap." Kids love it. I now live in DC, and your video reminded me how much I really miss living on the mountain with all its natural beauty. I'll try to share this video with everyone I know on Lookout and below.

I visited *Rock City* _about 50 years ago_...yes...and it doesn't appear to have changed, that much. I went through that narrow path back then, but, alas, _probably could not fit, fat mans squeeze_ now. As always, the video editing and music is *_top notch_*.I know the amount of work that goes into your videos along with all the research. *_Very impressive and a BIG Thumbs UP_*! My dad and his father were from Chattanooga. My granddad used to tell me when he went out to chop wood for the fireplace and burn it, musket balls used to fall out of the burnt wood. Left over from the civil wars that took place in that area.

Yupp I'm from Lookout Mountain, and my brother used to find bullets from the Civil War in our back yard near the creek where the soldiers must have camped for a while before being kicked out by the Yankees. Hence the bullets left behind.

Hello Robert. Another great documentary! I installed a Hayden transmission cooler a while back. I installed it in about 30 minutes. I left the hoses hanging then took the truck in for a transmission flush. I told them I wanted to use the cooler as an auxiliary instead of a bypass. The installation is a bit messy while the fluid is in so I felt this was the best option and the transmission shop didn't charge me labor since it was a matter of several minutes to hook up one hose to the transmission line then the other to the outlet of the radiator. Keep the videos coming..Please!!!!!!! Thank you again.

Deer scared off till dark. Thanks for the preview....I'll pass on that trip. Do want to see a cemetery there however, since Desmond Doss is buried there.

Rock City is cool but it's a bit pricey if you have a large group or family with you. The civil war park on the other side of the peak is well worth checking out as well. It has some great history about the battle of Chattanooga and some amazing views of the river and downtown Chattanooga. It's right up the street from the incline train station. The surrounding neighborhood is really nice as well.

Good evening Robert! I always look forward to your videos. An RV specific GPS is a must. It re-reroutes you and most trips will take longer but you avoid the roads you should not be on. Also do not make the mistake I made. Please PLEASE PLEASE purchase the Garmin RV GPS. Whatever you do - do not purchase a Rand McNally GPS!!! I purchased the RV-ND buy Rand McNally and I hate it. It sits on a shelf. After a few trips, I purchased a Garmin RV GPS. A very very expensive mistake. Buy a Garmin and not a Rand McNally. Continued blessings and save travels!

I have never seen Rock City that crowded. Not somewhere I would go on a holiday though. Surprised you didn't mention all the crazy road names in that town. Point park at the very tip of the mountain is where the best view is at by the way. Google image search it. Then again, Lookout is full of good views. "The castle in the sky" is also up there. Ruby Falls castle is also on that road up the mountain an you would have drove right past it if your GPS had taken you all the way up an down the main road. Not something I would want to do on a holiday but it has an elevator down to a huge cave with a waterfall in it. Google image search Ruby Falls. The pig trail roads it took you on bypassed you around low clearance train bridges. The "Chattanooga Cho Cho" was about a mile in front of you when it told you to turn. Also lots of free camping around that lake where you stopped at the Tn welcome center. The best ones are 5 to 10 miles downstream in Alabama though. No shortage of free camping along the Tennessee River...

Thank you for all the tips. I definitely have to revisit the area. I also had a camera malfunction in Chattanooga. I definitely must revisit the area with more time.

Man nice video, just one comment. You may buy a Nikon coolpix P900 with 83x zoom Then you can see the 7 states. The earth is flat my friend. If you have that camera you’ll realize it. Also to let you think, our world is 71% water. And water always finds its level. 🙌 regards 😉

yeh that kia did get a work out, but its normal even with a over powered v8. I had to slow down to 10 under to go up hills with a small trailer with a big v8 to prevent over heating. also if you think this is bad go to colorado, where I was born. As well as you know from your trip there.
