Actor Rock Hudson died of AIDS on Oct. 2, 1985, a story that drew international attention. Hudson’s health woes became apparent earlier that year, leading to rumors and intense tabloid coverage.
The actor eventually confirmed that he had AIDS. His illness brought attention to AIDS, which in 1985 had only recently entered the public consciousness and was still the subject of much confusion and misinformation.
This is the original Eyewitness News report anchored by Roger Grimsby and Bill Beutel, and aired at 6 p.m., Oct. 2, 1985 on WABC-TV New York.

I remember that we were horrified imagining such a fit elite athlete being disfigured by the disease so publicly. He still seemed to be at the height of his career competing for championships, the MVP Award and such. By then we knew that it could take years to progress to AIDS and die, but there weren't any promising treatments available.

Yes, he was gay. Back then it was a big deal and today not much of a deal. For some reason people still label someone as gay or straight. I don't think that will ever disappear. All the secrets he died with. Most likely nothing earth shaking with what goes on today. Aids was awful in the 1980's. The most difficult thing was the stigma or treatment patients had to endure. What a cruel and difficult life we all have to go through. Maybe make life a little more easier for someone today- gay or straight.

I had just recently turned 16 in the summer of ‘85, and had been invited by a friend’s family to spend a few days at their rental in Wildwood, and it was at that time and place I was when Rock held The press conference with Liz Taylor (I’m pretty sure Liz was there, but you know how memory can be…), and it was a huge deal (at least partly due to the fact that the potus wouldn’t even acknowledge that HIV/AIDS existed. (“Leaders”, huh? Who’d-a-thunk-it?!?)… It’s only fairly recently, since I’ve become a huge TCM fan , and have become familiar with so much of Golden Age Hollywood, that the poignancy of the whole ordeal has really sunk in… Elizabeth Taylor really seemed true-blue, a FRIEND, who, as Paul Newman once said, “worked at her friendships”… I can’t imagine how lonely and terrifying it must have been for Rock (or for anyone who died of AIDS in the 80s, the mental snapshots of hospital workers outfitted in insanely-heavy-duty Hazmat suits just to walk into the room of a patient with AIDS/HIV are still and will probably always be with me, as well as the all-encompassing image of the time of young people dying. The title of one of the early TV movies about AIDS has always summed it up neatly for me In a way - “An Early Frost”… at the time, a man being 59 years old would have seemed relatively “old”, but from the vantage point of nearly 40 years later, I can only think of “waste”. Such a damned shame how we treat our more-vulnerable (due to our personal values) populations. Still.
