Rock Hudson was a prolific heartthrob of the Golden Age of Hollywood. And although he was popular with the ladies, for much of his career, he secretly was gay. He achieved stardom with his roles in films such as 1954s Magnificent Obsession, 1955's Heaven Allows, and 1956s Giant. The latter of which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Hudson later found ongoing success appearing in a string of films, including 1959s Pillow Talk, 1964s Send Me no Flowers, and 1967s Tobruk. After becoming frustrated with the quality of scripts that he was being offered, Hudson turned to TV and was very successful in that medium as well starring in the popular 1971 mystery series McMillian & Wife. His final role was guest-starring on the ABC primetime soap Dynasty from 1984 to 1985.
At the peak of his fame in the early to mid-1960s, very few stars were closer than Rock Hudson and Lee Garlington, who dated from 1962 to 1965. Hudson's died from AIDS-related complications on October 2, 1985, at 59.
Since homosexuality wasn't nearly as accepted back in the mid-20th century, Hudson and Garlington went to great lengths to keep their Gay life as secret as possible. Join FactsVerse as we unravel the secrets that Garrington revealed about Rock Hudson's life, career, and love life. But first, let's take a look back at Hudson's early life and rise to fame.

Zo? Doris Day was no saint....a most difficult actress to work with. A lot of other performers did not find Doris as wonderful and chaste as her image portrayed. The greatest line ever said about her was, "I knew Doris Day BEFORE she was a virgin". That says it.....Oscar Levant.....
@jajanesaddictions
@jajanesaddictions 2 жыл бұрын
@@brucemarsico6, First, I was relaying the fact that Doris Day was a loyal friend to Rock Hudson and honored his wishes to remain silent about his sexuality, including his decision to not tell anyone about his AIDS status. Secondly, you are quoting someone (Levant) who was a junkie, bipolar, had his family walking on eggshells most of the time, and spent several stints in a mental hospital. Thirdly, He never said that line. Groucho Marx said it, and that's not the whole quote. Besides, who is a saint anyway? I was not commenting on her image. I was commenting on her loyalty to a friend. Don't get it twisted.

@@jajanesaddictions Jane...you're a spinner...wonderful retort. Seems you spend much of your time trying to figure out long gone Hollywood stars. I couldn't care less who said IT...IT was said. As for Oscar Levant...okay, he may have been a schmuck in a lot of ways, great pianist though. Perhaps you have a copy of Rapsody In Blue/Columbia Lp CL-700, Oscar Levant/Andre Kostelanetz...great album. Don't try to psycho-analyze it. As for Doris, she made a great lp/Day by Night/Columbia CL-1053, romantic, beautiful singing. She was difficult to work with and her image belied her true personality. Never said they were wonderful beyond belief. Have a good time...

He is Creator and knows how His creatures are to behave. Interesting enough, most everyone 60 years ago understood this, and people of most every culture and beliefs also did, for most of the ages past. Recent modern man thinks that he knows everything, but has completely lost his sense of morality. He calls good evil and evil he calls good. God is the one we all answer to. He made man for woman and woman for man, totally obviously to anyone who cares about truth. A male "part" obviously is to fit into the female "part", not into another males behind, which obviously has been created for an all together different purpose, and is filthy used for any other purpose than it created purpose. This is 100% elementary. Only the morally blind and depraved are blind to this.

His best role by far was the film “Seconds” where he plays a man given a new identity and face, so he can be himself. That’s the message I got , as Hudson must have grasped the meaning of that role. The movie is almost entirely cast with black listed actors, so they too knew about getting a second chance. That is what Rock Hudson was not given in life because of the times -a chance to be himself.

Jesus seemed so nice I bet He'd let them pass through the pearly gates now that they could see with their own eyes that what they'd been told was verified. I can't picture Jesus being they type who'd let people stay in Hell for eternity just because they made the mistake of not believing in Him in life. OF course, back in the day, it would be easy to believe in Him when you witnessed Him raising the dead, walking on water and turning fish into wine. 😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇

I grew up in a small town in N. California. Back in the early 1960's, Rock Hudson was staying in town during the filming of the movie, "A Gathering of Eagles" which was filmed mostly at Beale AFB. It was said that while at a bar in town, a woman approached Hudson and asked him to dance. He reportedly told her "No, if I dance with you I'll have to dance with every broad in the place." I met Rock Hudson in 1977 while he was on the campus of Cal State Northridge shooting a scene for (I think) "McMillan and Wife". He was standing alone, away from the rest of the cast and crew, so a friend and I just walked up to him to say "hi" and hoping to possibly shake his hand. We ended up talking with him for at least 15 minutes while the crew was setting up lighting and the camera. He was exceptionally kind and seemed to enjoy our brief conversation -- no sign of a Hollywood star attitude. Of course, I realize now that it probably helped that my friend was an absolutely gorgeous, tall, muscular 19 year old who had a habit of wearing his button down shirt completely open to show off his amazing body! (A habit which caught my eye in much the same way, which is how we became friends in the first place.) RIP Rock.

Come September was one of the most underrated comedies of all time. Rock and Gina were also incredibly attractive in their day. She is still alive I believe and if so will be 95. If one looks at La Lollo in that movie it is hard to imagine an actress in Hollywood today of her beauty. Sadly, it makes no difference if you are gay or straight if you are two people who need different things from a relationship or are unable to provide something important your partner needs then you need to go your separate ways, which is what happened to Rock Hudson and Lee Garlington. I'm glad he had a daughter and may well have grandchildren now and that his family line did not end with him. My favourite episode of McMillan and Wife is Cross and Double Cross where he (as Police Commissioner Stuart McMillan) danced with Nancy Walker (the Housekeeper Mildred), they must have had so much fun - I wish there were out- takes, with any luck these may surface at some point in time.

Do you know if Tony Randall was gay? He seemed to be.

@@helenfong3339 He was married twice and had kids. I don't think he was. No matter, he was a great character actor!

Rock did not willingly admit he was gay. It was very near the end of his life and the hospital in Paris told him they wouldn't treat him otherwise.

I was actually too young to remember him in many of his movies my mother was an avid fan… my full awareness of him as an actor and his history when his TV series was on the air call McMillan and wife he start with Susan Saint James…. At that point in time I was still struggling with my sexuality so imagine my shock when the big reveal became known I saw him in his brief role on the show Dynasty which I was a fan of even then to me he didn’t look quite right….When I learned of his passing this huge sadness came over me

This makes me cry. I agree with most of the comments below; you’ve all put it so well that there is nothing I can add. Very regrettable that ilovebeinggay has nothing better to do than write stupid comments. I feel.sorry for him/her/they

Odd that you refer to a photo of Paul Newman and “his wife” as if she was not a star herself. His wife was in fact the great Joanne Woodward who is as much a Hollywood legend as “her husband.”
