Poppins and I visit our next island in the Great Lakes' Icelander region - Rock Island, Wisconsin. Formerly Thordarson Island, it is a unique place with Nordic buildings inspired by the Icelandic roots of the man who built an estate on the island.
Chester Hjortur Thordarson was an inventor whose inventions have affected the lives of Americans with his work on electric grid components. But his island estate in northern Lake Michigan is one of his best known legacies.
We first take a ferry across "Death's Door" to Washington Island - the second largest Icelandic settlement in the United States. Then we catch the ferry to Rock Island State Park.

We did - at the Washington Island Campground. But, the air mattress developed a "hole". And we were slightly unhappy! 😂😂

Super interesting story. He was mainly self educated. Goes to show all of us that your education should never end and does need some paper that said you spent a lot of money for some learning. I thought I had a big library. I guess not.
