Al Kooper was the keyboardist for Bob Dylan on the albums, "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Blonde on Blonde," including the song, “Like a Rolling Stone,” (ranked number one single of all time by Rolling Stone magazine). He started as a professional songwriter in the 60s, founded the group Blood, Sweat and Tears and was a stage manager at the Monterey Pop Festival. He jammed countless times with his good friend, Jimi Hendrix, recorded with Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills, and played on hundreds of albums. He was a much sought-after studio musician for The Rolling Stones, B.B. King, The Who, Alice Cooper and Cream.
In the 70s, he signed the original Lynyrd Skynyrd and produced their first three albums, including the timeless classic, “Freebird,” which has elicited frenzied “requests” from shouting fans at thousands of concerts since. Al Kooper produced the first Tubes album and the production masterpiece, “White Punks on Dope.” He also wrote “Backstage Passes,” maybe the best memoir book, ever, from a musician. I recently got a chance to talk to Al and he is one tough interview, but also a loyal supporter to countless artists and a man with a big heart.

It might have been due to the fact Ed was not a drinker or rebel rouser. They all had respect for Ed and wanted to be close, but I think Ed kept his distance to a certain extent. Just an observation from all the video and interviews I’ve watched.

If the interviewer had said "It looked like a mix of black and white" Al Kooper would have interrupted and said "NO. It was grey." While it is important to maintain an accurate historical record, and individual phrases over time can be ascribed, what he's doing at many points is nitpicking.

Wow for Al to mention more than once here that FREE is his favorite rock band of all time, is really saying something. I must admit that “All Right Now” is about as deep as I got into them, as it was (and still is) a radio staple. Then Paul Rodgers (and the bassist from Free I think?) went on to form BAD COMPANY and the rest is history… but boy I think I need to really (re)discover the music of FREE…. Best wishes to you all for 2022

If anybody gets a chance to read Al's book 'Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards' you're in for a treat. ... One of the best R.&R. books you'll read. ... The lack of gasoline on the plane with Skynyrd was because they delayed take off for over two hours, while the plane was running, because two members were an hour late for take off and no one could do the math. ... This was the 70's.

I think the main reason for the tragedy was the pilots not doing what every responsible pilot does before takeoff which is check the fuel level by physically checking by hand with a dipstick. The planes fuel gauge was determined to be faulty. The pilots were lazy and trusted their gauge with their life which was very stupid

Just for the record, there was nothing mechanically wrong with Skynyrd’s plane. There’s so much urban myth surrounding this. Read the NTSB report…it’s freely available on the Internet. The flight crew was found to be negligent with regard to how much fuel the aircraft was burning, that is to say, their ‘rate of fuel consumption’ and how much they actually had onboard. The only issue with the aircraft was that the starboard engine was being run on an ‘auto rich’ setting to make it run better. That should have been looked at. But everything else was mechanically sound. The NTSB investigators found no mechanical problems. The pilot thought he had 5 hours of fuel when they left SC; the NTSB calculated that he had 2.6; just barely enough for the 2.5 hour flight to Baton Rouge. And the aircraft was burning more than normal so there was not enough to make it. That’s the official finding, folks. Do read the report if you can; it’s very interesting. I love aviation so it’s fascinating to me, and maddening that the flight crew caused the accident that took this amazing band from us.

Why was a mechanic goin to meet them in Baton Rouge, I'm not an expert but if you have to use more fuel than normal there is a problem. I do know this an engine with 29000 hours will need some tweaking suggesting a problem, they may not have been aware of the amount of fuel being used

This "interviewer" has NO clue what he's talking about and from his responses, doesn't appear to even listen and follow what Al is saying at times. I especially like when he claims Crosby quit the Byrds to join CSN at Monterey Pop Festival. That is totally laughable, given Monterey Festival was in 1967 and CSN first formed a year later in 1968. He is confusing CSN with the Buffalo Springfield, which included Stephen Stills and Neil Young. But Crosby did not quit the Byrds at the time and certainly did not join the Springfield. What happened was that Young was unable to participate at Monterey, and Crosby agreed to fill in for his friend, playing with the Springfield... without permission of his fellow Byrd band members, who viewed this as disloyalty. He also made a rather arrogant and controversial political speech regarding the JFK assassination which was filmed on camera. As Monterey was a major event, increasing international exposure for the Byrds (and most other of the groups), the association with a competing folk-psychedelic rock band, along with the controversy, caused the break that got him fired. But, no, Crosby didn't quit the Byrds to join CSN, which did not even exist at the time. Oh, and the third member of CSN, Graham Nash was still lead singer of the Hollies, having recently released the hit single "Carrie Anne" in May of 1967.

So many nonsense comments. He LOVED Skynyrd so much that he: 1) Gave them their 1st record deal; 2) He moved to GA; 3) He got them their 1st tour for the legendary Who album Quadrophenia; etc, etc, etc. Without AL KOOPER, you may never have heard of LS. Don't be such snowflakes, JFC. Does he sometimes sound irritated? Yeah, he's probably 70+ yrs old and has answered these questions hundreds of times. Unlike you and me (who are nobodys), this guy PLAYED w/Bob Dylan, LS, the Who, the Rolling Stones, Cream, etc, etc, etc. Instead of whining, you ought to be thankful AL KOPPER fell in love w/Lynyrd Skynyrd and helped make them into superstars.
