It was apparent pretty early on that the RRHOF was Jan Werner's " authenticity" HOF. Finally pressured into accepting" less worthy" acts, It was delicious watching him forced to acknowledge Rush's significance. The bizarre inductee choices made over the years are too long to list. What finally made me dismiss the RRHOF altogether was Donna Summer being inducted. You don't expect Metallica to be in the Rn'B HOF. ALL nonsense at this point.

You are exactly correct! Anyone who knows ANYTHING about music simply laughs at Jann Wenner's lists (Top 100 Artists of All Time, Top 10 Songs, Bands, Drummers, Guitarists, Singers, Producers, yadda, yadda, yadda of All Time.) Music is NOT Gymnastics. It is an "Artform" NOT a "Competition." An Olympic medal denotes success in a defined, measurable CONTEST. The judges' ratings represent how closely the athlete's performance matched the "Perfection" defined by the sport or who was fastest in completing the activity or who defeated their opponents. My favorite band R U S H was ignored by "Rolling Stone" magazine their entire career because Mr. Wenner NEVER liked them. He refused to induct them for DECADES until it became obvious to all that his snubbing of the greatest rock trio of all time was ridiculous. Many bands would have ignored the induction ceremony invitation when it finally arrived, but R U S H are mature men who understood that although they personally could NOT give a rat's ass about Mr. Wenner's "personal record collection," their inclusion meant a lot to some of their fans. So, on the airplane ride to the shore of Lake Erie, guitarist Alex Lifeson penned his rather long acceptance speech that contained the only word that R U S H had heard every time they read anything in RS: "BLAH!" 😂

It's all about Money, popularity, editorial bias, pandering to whatever is trending culturally and whatever the algorithm and marketing department determine which Music and Artists must be seen to be rewarded and championed in their Annual awards to keep the organisation "relevant." I'm genuinely not trolling when I say that, imho, if Prog Rock was, culturally speaking, predominantly a MOBO instead of predominantly a White, Middle Class phenomena, then Wenner and the R&RHOF would be falling over themselves to display their total and unequivocal, love, respect and deep appreciation for the genre and the bands and artists who created that music. The greatest ever moment in the history of the R&RHOF is, and will always be, Alex Lifesons acceptance "speech" when Rush when inducted in 2013....Skip to 4.35 for Alex's part but it's more impactful if you watch from the beginning imho. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z7BpgLSZ3LvUg58.html

If we're honest, the Rock and Roll Hall of Lame hasn't been taken seriously for decades. They're more interested in being trendy than genuine. For years and years, Rush weren't considered because one idiot didn't personally like them. When they finally did get in, Alex Lifeson made his feelings known in the famous Blah Blah acceptance speech - check it out if you want to see something truly weird.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame needs to change it's name to the Music Hall of Fame period. Enough with the " we are edgy by inducting a rap or country artist" bull crap. The Hall of Fame " in my opinion" is an extension of the corporate controlled music industry that for the last 30 yrs has done nothing but churn out pop techno radio friendly garbage. The development of great music artists doesn't exist anymore. It's not worth the time or money to a record label, quick dollar hits is where it's at. Induct every music artist on the planet and be done with it. My Hall of Fame is in my heart and mind and if I deem you worthy, your in.

THEY are worthy. TheJAM were worthy, especially by the time they banged out 'News of the World'. MOTORHEAD absolutely in a perfect World, would own the HALL. The RAMONES are in there because they toiled in poverty for years while playing every nite, for decades. a sympathy vote(I'm a fan), if I ever saw one. Mike Love now includes 'Rockaway beach' in HIS act. 2 acts paying tribute to each other, w/ an original RAMONES tune. it's far too late to repair the damage the Hall hath wrought. getting back to Dolly Parton, I remember Ray Charles openly being clueless, as to why he was being inducted, if memory serves. a big 'if'. but I don't have a huge problem w/ him. saw him once. safe to say, it wasn't a rock show. a showbiz show. but his contributions are there.

BTW, I have always said that they were as original as a rock band can be. they admired people like the BEACH BOYS, THE STOOGES, MC5, but they never sounded derivative. they sounded like themselves. Saw them in concert more than any other band (I'm a metal guy, but love a wide array of music) and they never failed to deliver. The Jam were incredible, so important for literate punk rock, with great touches of soul and rhythm and blues. Very British, though, and didn't always translate here in the states, it took myself awhile to understand their greatness. Motorhead are sacred to me, they are the sound of unadulterated freedom! I own every album, all 347 of em', ha ha, and their sonic fury and speed, with killer riff after riff, never fails to deliver! RIP Lemmy and Phil! Hey, are you also going to talk about Napster, Spotify, and streaming? I feel like things are so fragmented in pop culture that it's hard for any band to get a big name. And great exciting rockers who were climbing and well-known or well-hated were part of the ride. My two cents.

Excellent rant and great points on the RRHOF! I was more involved with it a few years back, but every year, the nominations leave me very disappointed. Way too many deserving bands/artists not being recognized. Iron Maiden and Soundgarden have been nominated a few times, but the Foo Fighters and Rage Against the Machine were voted in instead. Joy Division/New Order were nominated last year, but Sheryl Crow was inducted over them. Motorhead has been nominated a few times. Hell, The Cure, T. Rex, Roxy Music, Judas Priest, Kate Bush, The Go-Go's, and Pat Benatar have just finally been inducted in the past 3 or 4 years. But this year, very little Rock bands are represented, and it seems to get worse every year.

Joan Jett, Dolly Parton, Joan Baez, Nat King Cole and Harry Belafonte are so much more rockin' (and have done way more to shape rock music) than King Crimson, Can, Captain Beefheart, Soft Machine, Blue Oyster Cut, Rory Gallagher, The Scorpions, Thin Lizzy, The MC5, The Mahavishnu Orchestra or John Coltrane. You'd have to believe that a cat fart has more concussive power than an atom bomb to think that the RRHOF is merit based or worth following.

His work with Humble Pie was more than worthy. Solo albums prior to comes alive were more rock than the live album. He played I'm waiting for my man (VU) on the Glass Spider tour with Bowie. 1997 was youngest member of Ringo's all Starr band, with Jack Bruce, Simon Kirke, and the piano player and singer from Procul Harem, who chose The Devil went to Kansas as one of his 2 songs. Not bad. It's a plain shame, judging musicians by their least appealing work.

Rock is Piazza, oh sorry, Pizza Culture: You take an African-American Style Bottom, throw some Red, White and Green on it and then you can throw everything but the Garbage Bin over it. No Music Style (Pop is no Style, it is a Multitude of Styles), not even Jazz or Brasilien Pop is so openenly „adolescent“ as Rock, so to throw Country and Salsa and Hip Hop in the Mix is Rock. Most of Rock is Pop but some Rock ain‘t - like some of this Channels beloved Progrock. Concerning the Rock‘n Roll Hall of Fame: I usually do not cite the German Bundeskanzler Adenauer but he nailed it: That is so unimportant that we do not even ignore it. I know it exists but most of the Time I don‘t hear about it and if I do I take it as Gossip, like right now. Don‘t need no Hall of Fame vor Beefheart or Björk or Belgian Super Progrocker Present, I love em either Way.

Brilliant video! However, just one tiny bone of contention: I don't believe that big band jazz is dead. It is still a potentially viable artistic force. Take, for example, the Dave Holland Big Band from the early 2000s, and their brilliant albums What Goes Around (2002) and (especially) Overtime (2005). This is new and vital big band jazz. Otherwise, I'm in complete agreement with you.

I agree whit you in general when you say rock is dead. The charts and the radio rarely play rock except for the classic rock station that still play the same old hits in a loop never exceptionally playing a more obscure B side track. Some artist still manage to carry the spirit of rock like "REN" or is former busking band like " THE BIG PUSH". Ren is an amazing artist that does classic Rock with a Punk and Reggae influences. He also does Hip hop and rap. This guy is a true artist with a mishmash of influences and incredible raw musical and lyricism. I strongly believe that there is still great rock artist they just have a limited distribution. As for the decline of rock I strongly believe that, as the Bugle sang it, MTV is the culprit. After the rise MTV, rock transformed into Las Vegas type entertainment. Suddenly it was not enough to be a great musician or singer you had the beautiful and be a dancer as Madonna. It transformed pop and rock into in a new type of 50s musical comedy spectacle. I don't say that they are not talented but it is not real rock. Artist and band such as Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Jethro Tull or Yes never would have broken the charts after the advent of MTV. Some of the glam rock might have managed but most of the greats of the 60s or 70s wouldn't have made it. I fully agree with you about King Crimson, they are one of the most influential band in the history of rock. When I was a kid even the people who hated them still recognized that were trailblazers as Zappa and Captain Beefheart were. In the 80s I was also a big fan of jazz and my friend used to say: "Jazz is not dead it only smell funny". You are basically saying the same thing about rock. But there is still "some" great rock and jazz". It just not well distributed and not in the charts anymore. You could also take this to a wider scope and cover all forms of popular distributed arts forms such as music, cinema and literature. They all suffer from the corporate spirit of the distribution company that don't believe in taking risk anymore and don't really give creative freedom to the artist. Artist that are signed up today are mostly talented doers not trailblazers. Made up band constructed by producers à la One Direction. They have nothing to say. They want to make money not dream about changing the world.
