I would advise rock sliders to almost everyone, even if you don't off road much. They've come in handy to help recover vehicles in snow and other situations. And like Chloe said... if they save the side of your truck one time then they already paid for themselves. Also if you do go off-roading with rocks or ruts, steps can get hung up and then either snapped off or deformed. I've seen it happen several times... also while doing nothing to crazy or intense. But they are heavy and they will take away from your payload a bit. Awesome video as always Chloe!

Because I wanted a good way to lift my vehicle on the trail for repairs, tire changes, etc. I went with rock sliders from White Knuckle Off Road. We take our 2017 Tacoma to Baja a few times a year and being protected with more lift point is a huge plus. Also, the ability to stand along the length of sliders to reach on-top the truck is very nice. Great video Chloe!

got the Westcott Designs rock slider about a year ago. love them, look great. had them powder coat them and they shipped to me in guam. they did a great job protecting the sliders, packaging was great, no damage being shipped all this way. not cheap to ship ($750) but not something I can pickup and bring back with me. all in all, am thrilled with their product. install not easy, but was able to do by myself. thanks for the videos Chloe, appreciate all the great info!

I went with go-Rhino Dss I think it’s a great balance between sliders and steps . They look awesome and I have 15” of clearance with stock TRD OFF ROAD Suspension. Also optional frame mounts or body mounts . Great informative video as always Thank you !

I checked them out and the fact that they do not have a kick out at the rear is a concern. I have seen trucks get locked into an obstruction between the rear tire and slider that could have been prevented with a rear kick out. Their quality and prices are great but they need a set with kick outs for just in case.

Great info! I have side steps (predator steps) that came with my Tacoma TRD off road. They are very functional and add to my trucks looks. But I can see how the rock sliders can also do the trick! Thanks!

Be carefull. Its not hard to snag them. I snagged mine a few times. It really didn't take much for them to bend, and then break. I highly recommend getting rid of the predator side steps.

Just got a 2022 Taco with those step sliders. On day two we went off roading .. left passenger step lasted 2 miles ... the right front drivers step lasted 3 miles. Day 3 .. at the welding shop cutting off the steps and bed lining the remaining rail. Now they function much better.

in Colorado, RCI Offroad is the goto for sliders and armor. the RCI sliders have saved me a few times on some of the more difficult trails here in the rockies.

I’ve got RCI rock sliders and skids on my F150. I got one of the very first sets of sliders and being a new product there were some mounting issues but RCI was outstanding to deal with. Ended up needing to have a fab shop do some modifications but RCI refunded me the cost of the fab work and I don’t think too many companies would do that.

I have side steps, mainly for my kids to hope in the truck. Also they were like $800 cheaper than the sliders I initially wanted plus the turn around time to receive them. But I’m going sliders pretty soon

I love tacomas but my newest truck is an F150. I had some pretty heavy duty side steps. I hit a large rock causing the truck to pivot around the rock. The side steps were extremely bent. My fear with side steps and off roading is doing damage to the pinch welds/rockers. I ended up going with RCI rock sliders. I caught a large stump and the truck pivoted in a very violent manor around the stump hard enough to jerk the steering wheel out of my hand breaking my thumb and tearing 2 ligaments requiring surgery. The sliders had zero damage other than some scuffs. No damage to the truck either.

My sliders (Mobtown Off Road) were 140 lbs total and over $400 in shipping to Hawaii. I painted and installed myself. Angled sliders are better at defending against door dings. Also, with bolt-on sliders, you need to consider if you’re willing to drill into your frame as some require that. Mine didn’t. That said, they’ve paid for themselves.

Thanks for the tips from this vid. I may invest in the side steps from TrailFX. I use my Tacoma TRD Off Road for both usage round the house and road trips, but also on forest roads or overlanding trails to camp sites or lakes. Most of these trails are dirt / gravel related roads that often RV's and awd cars can travel on without trouble. Example, areas round Land between the Lakes in KY or Valley of the Gods in Utah. I think rock sliders is over kill for my usage. And the side steps will help with visiting my parents as my dad is current 89 and would be difficult for him to get into my truck without the steps.

Another factor about the stepping up on the rock sliders is if you have racks and our camper shell I need to get on top it’s easier with the rock sliders to be able to stand hire and cruise around to access your gear

If you live in the rust belt, the sliders might be a better idea than the steps. I have seen so many steps and rocker panels rust away, leaving a dangerously dangling step.

Thanks for the video. I would like to suggest is using a Fluid film spray can to spray on them boats. The sea air can cause them to rust, and will help you in keeping your truck looking great. 😁 Have a nice day.

This video was really helpful - thanks. My Tacoma came with side steps which have worked great for accessing the roof rack and to help others get into the truck, but I am concerned about how easily they can be damaged off road. I am in the process now of looking at rock sliders. I live in Maine, and they are not available here, and there is no-one who can do the installation. To purchase them and have them installed would require a 2 hour trip each way to N.,H. The cost involved with 2 estimates I have gotten so far is close to $2000. One shop estimated 5 hours for installation, which precludes waiting for them in addition to the travel time each way. I am hoping to figure out how this can be done.

I also would recommend Cali Raise LED. The product quality was amazing and they sent me all the hardware needed for the rock sliders along with some other potential add-ons free. My only complaint was shipping cost from Cali to Louisiana... I ended up going with a closer brand (road armor) for my bed rack and the price was comparable minus shipping but the quality was much lower. Poor welding quality (one bracket was unusable because of slag in the threading!) lots of burrs in every hole meant for mounting gear & the powder coat definitely missed spots because of poor angling when spraying. If anyone can recommend a company in the south Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, or Alabama region please drop a name.
