I noticed you said you want to see anger, but He couldn’t afford to show anger on his first album he had a point to prove. He focused on lyricism and production. I believe he didn’t want for the album to be dismissed and stereotyped as “just a black person yelling on songs” And from personal experience we don’t have the luxury to be angry and listened to at the same

definitely, plus the whole idea of like this is how all of us from this type of culture are raised and brough up through pain and suffering or just feeling "less-than" so it's almost like we're just tired of it. it's hard to hold that kind of anger for so long, y'know.

Twista's verse on "Slow Jamz" is legendary, glad you picked up on that. Not many rappers that can spit that fast while staying on beat while also keeping the lyrics coherent.

I remember the first time I heard "Jesus Walks," around when it first came out. It really was a bombshell. At that time, gangsta rap was THE dominant form of hip-hop, and something that sounded like Kanye West was really different at his level of mass appeal. (Obviously, there were conscious artists before him, but even many of them were more brash and in-your-face, like Tupac or even Public Enemy. Kanye West was confident, but more reflective than brash.) It was also definitely unusual to see a prominent hip-hop artist endorsing Christianity this blatantly, or sampling gospel in this way to serve this purpose. This was a revelation, no pun intended. It was a big risk for Kanye West to release this as a single, and it paid off amazingly well, in large part I think just because of how well crafted the song was -- the modulations, the transitions, the obvious passion and sincerity in the lyrics, and the way it tapped into the consciousness of both white and black musical heritage in the United States.

@@cs-ke1by No it’s actually rare for a rapper to produce their own beats. There’s also nobody who can do it as well as Ye. The ones that can produce as well, cant rap like Ye. Only close comparison is Dre, who has writers.

The consumerism motive, that you were talking about in 28:30 I believe, is explained in "All Falls Down". Kanye was saying, that he is self conscious about the fact that consumerism and American dream is something toxic and affective, though, he is so self conscious, that you always see him with at least one of his watches. Even with being conscious about it, he is still a consumer, a person who enjoys bragging about expensive stuff, and living this "elite" lifestyle.

"Chi" is just a shorter version of Chicago. A lot of people from Chicago just call it the "Chi". Pronounced "Shy", "Shy/Chi-Town"

Welcome to the most adventurous discography from a rapper. You really get to see the mastermind behind his creation when producing the music and lyrics. I’m also a rocker at heart and I appreciate the musical elements he adds from: percussion, drums, guitar, electric guitar, bass, 808, piano, violins, cello, etc. He has some good rock elements throughout his albums too, especially in Beautiful Dark Twisted...808s, and Yeezus! Cant wait to follow on with you!

Before this albulm Kanye was widely know for his soul sample switching, he would take soul and rnb songs, sample, loop and add drums. He was soo good at this he became Jay-Z favourite producers and nobody wanted to hear him rap cuz they were more interested in his production value

I have loved the New Workout Plan since the first listen. I love how cheeky and poignant it is. But watching someone else enjoy it for the first time is awesome. Kanye doesn't get enough credit for his willingness to let his guard down and be silly

I think the "cleaness" of the album reflects on how even though people are expected to do their best at college, they know their future after graduation isn't promised, thus the lyrics heavily contrasting. It's like the voice inside the students mind as the lyrics, but the music represents the setting around them.

Jaime Fox tells the funniest story about how the song "Slow Jamz" was recorded. Kanye was an up and coming artist and he showed up to Jaime's house in the middle of the party to record the song with half his jaw wired shut. Jaime took him to his studio to record it and he didn't think the song was that good (because Jaime was old school RnB) so he forgot all about it. Jaime went off and did a bad movie (his words) and then the song blew up and he was shocked haha.

You should for sure review Graduation and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. MBDTF is Kanye’s best work (great story, incredible music). Graduation is inspired by anthemic stadium rock sound

the original release version of school spirit is censored. It was censored by kanye himself. He asked the lady that was sampling for the song if he could sample her and she said that he could sample her if he didn't cuss in the song so he had to change the first version with cussing. But instead of redoing it or whatever, he decided to just reverse the curse words.

The reason why School Spirit is edited is because Kanye sampled Aretha Franklin. The only way for her to clear the sample was if there was no cursing in the song.

School Spirit is edited because they couldn't get the sample cleared on that specific song unless it was clean. the explicit version is out there but the album version is the clean version

somebody else mentioned that the want for "angry" rap may just be an internal thing where you're used to "angry black man" but that's the awesome thing with rap and Hip-hop is it's definitely not all like that. there's so much more lyricism and beat producing that goes into making truly great records and it's not by any stretch just always some dude that's pissed at the world. that does exist but it's such a small part but it's what most people think of as soon as they hear "rap"

I must say you are getting absolutely spoiled with the recommendations thus far. Starting your hip hop career with the likes of Tyler, Kendrick, kanye, frank ocean is really top tier in terms of lyricism, musical creativity, quality etc. most of hip hop isn’t as musically innovative, you will easily find a lot of great lyrical ability out there (although content gets recycled a lot) or you will find great sound and vibes (playboi carti, lil uzi vert (although vert has good lyricism)). I hope you keep getting steered towards the greats!

i feel the description on genius for the new workout plan seemed like a stretch, but it was actually just a satirical song that purposely misogynistic to critique the expectations for women lol just like the majority of the album where it criticizes america’s social standards through humour.

Work out plan was a really funny video, it was really different when it came out. And around that time David banner came out with a track called Play, and the video was working out idr which one was first but also interesting... David banner had a song called Cadillacs on 22s and its actually one of my favorite songs and the video makes me cry evertime... kinda like he was the first to do the strong God like song and pretty much state the industry wants him to be explicit. So its funny kanye came out with Jesus walks after (not RIGHT AFTER) and also has the silly workout video that kinda goes against the godly theme I guess you'd say.

i'm not sure if you know this by now, but "chi" (pronounced shy) is short for chicago, "walk thru the valley of chi" of course is talking about walking thru chicago (i didn't watch the full video yet but saw where you said this, hope this helps!

This took me back to my college years lol. Miss this Kanye. Part of the awe of this album was the production. At this time Ye was known for his work on Jay Z's classic Blueprint, and people were trying to bite that style, but this was basically the follow up sound to that album. People forget Kanye is not a rapper, he's a producer that was decent enough at rap to leverage his beats into a deal to let him rap too. Workout Plan is actually the 2nd version. There was a better version floating around prior to the album. Wish I could still find it, but it's elusive. as for the editing, I dont know if this was the case, but I have heard of instances where the sample being used stipulates to certain things in order to clear the sample. Swearing I have heard be one of them before.

You keep saying you want that anger. At the time no one was saying the things he was saying. So, him just mentioning it was enough. Also, black people, especially black men are always thought to be "angry" so the fact that he isn't, and he's more hopeful, or sarcastic is better to me. Rap often was known to be angry. He was truly doing something different.

ik this is a bit older, and maybe the criticsms you had of wanting more rage when rappers rap about being disadvantaged but I think the reason why rappers dont get super pissed off is because the reality of it is, we have BEEN rapping about this stuff lmao. One of the first most popular rap songs was talking about socio political issues after all, its been rapped about so many times, that the rage is kinda needless.

Jesus Walks line “valley of the Chi”, he means chi as in Chicago. Which has one of the worst murder rates in the country, one of the points that comes up is having faith as the only thing to keep you going when you live in an environment like that

School Spirit is edited because the sample you hear is the one and only Aretha Franklin! She would only allow the use of the sample on an edited song. They even tried a version without the sample and quickly realized which one to go with.

I dunno if someone said already, but a lot of curse words had to be cut from the album in order for some of the samples to clear. So it’s annoying but the album had to come out haha

I was trying to think of a good description of the way I feel watching you miss all the references in these songs and talk over the best lyrics. It came to me: It's the way Dwight was feeling on the episode of The Office when Jim was intentionally butchering his description of Battlestar Galactica (to trigger Dwight because Dwight wasn't allowed to waste work time on non-work-related conversations). The way Dwight, closed his eyes and crumpled the paper and bit it fighting to endure it is the perfect reference. If this video was meant to be triggering to Kanye fans or just people who understand the songs, it was successful. 💔😔😫😂

🎁🌱🎨 With this understanding, maybe listen to Slaveship and the interlude before it again: ▶️ It's not the regular, working hard and not liking the job. It's expressing black struggle and having to take the crumbs your dealt.. UNTIL YOU DON'T anymore. That spaceship is a powerful drive.. or flight. The details of black struggle attempting to be expressed with the interlude shows how extreme it is. The song may seem chill, it's all about perspective and chess. If it was a rock song, they'd be raging angry you said.. but then keep in mind you're now getting rid of those conditioned myths "they" try to fool the public with.. the term "angry black man / woman is a weapon. Keep in mind you said you expected angry music from Kanye when you first listened.. They're good at conditioning. We have to be even better at sifting and deciphering.. Plus, it's the difference of keeping sanity rather than the alternative. There's a huge painting inside the whole picture.. imagine if the picture is in a room surrounded by trick mirrors.. similar to why they didn't allow y'all to listen to music in bootcamp.
