Some people think it could be a talkbox right before James' solo but I think it's just James scraping the string with a pick while using a wah.

James's solo on the second half of this song might be my all time favourite. I can listen to it over and over. It just feels so purposeful, melodic and well written - as opposed to that shred-y "show off" soloing style you mentioned.

Without a doubt! Hard agree on this one. To Live is to Die is actually kind of boring for me, but everyone is different.

IMO This is the BEST track on DM. I always loved all of Metallica’s instrumentals. To live is to die is one of favorites.

7:11 - That triplet build is a callback to the opening to 2x4, and half or Lars's fills on LOAD and ReLOAD .

Interesting note: If you move all the low Bs (open fifth string) in the bass intro an octave up, you have the A string portion of the "main riff".

Really haven’t given this one a fair listen. The intro and outro drag a bit but I really like the bridge and build. 4, 4, 4, 5 for 17 points.

i never liked that melody part in this song.. a lot of people loved it, but to me it sounds like it doesn't belong and it's kind of cheesy like some nintendo game legend of zelda or something.. but james and kirks solos are top best!

I’m guessing what you’re hearing is the difference between major and minor. That section has a more “positive” vibe that feels like it’s rising upward. It’s more poppy where the rest of the song is kind of gritty or evil. Does that sound like a good definition of what you’re hearing?
